Do you name your mechs? If so, what significance do your names hold? I'll start:

HBK-4P: "Captain Hook" (he only has one good hand, and if he loses it, he's screwed!)
CN9-AL: "Flesh Wound" (Monty Python reference)
AS7-D-DC: "Dreadnought" (obvious, "all big guns" mantra)
HGN-HM: "Sandman" (Metallica "Enter Sandman")

CN9-AL: "Toastmaster"
CN9-D: "Musical Box"
HGN-733C: "Scotchtober"
HGN-733P: "Willie"

I figured it would make me laugh every time I saw it. I was correct.

I had a name for my Cat-A1 before the CB wipe but it's probably not appropriate to post...has something to do with the Streakcat build.

<S>

My Highlander, HGN 732 is named after the same 'mech I use in tabletop Battletech. It's also armed identically to my tabletop 'mech as well, based on the HGN 732b variant.

Gauss Rifle w/ 3x tons of ammo
3x Medium Lasers
LRM 20 + Artemis w/ 2 tons of ammo
SRM 6 + Artemis w/ 1 ton of ammo
3x Jump Jets

The 'mech is named 'Pale Horse', drawing it's name from Revelations 6:8: "And I looked, and behold a pale horse. And he who sat on it was called Death, and Hell came with him."

What I would make it look like, if I could.

CN9-A: Fearless. My first mech. I didn't know you could name them, so didn't have something already in mind and just went with the first thing that came to me. Fits, though, because that's the mindset and playstyle that I find works best when piloting her. Hit hard, hit fast, keep moving, and don't let up for a moment. My most-used and favorite mech, she's run everything from autocannons to gauss to streaks, but with the SRM buff is back to the standard brawler medium lasers and triple pack of SRMs.

CN9-AL: Helios, then Phoenix. Originally only bought it to master the A, named it Helios because I wasn't going to buy DHS for a mech I wasn't going to keep and I knew it was therefore going to run as hot as the sun. ^_^ Sold it after eliting it out, but eventually rebought it after I realized just how much I liked centurions. I had re-used the name by then, so Phoenix seemed to fit the 're-birth' of the mech and stuck with the fire theme.

CN9-D: Mercury. So named because of the huge engines it could mount. Ironically the engine went into a catapult as soon as I elited it, so it doesn't live up to the name anymore. Don't really use it much these days as it's got the worst hardpoints of the three and I don't really like putting XLs on centurions.

CPLT-C1: Helios. Re-used the name because I liked it, and because I originally bought it with the intent of running a PPC build. One of my most used mechs.

CPLT-A1: Sagittarius. Because naming it 'archer' seemed appropriate for a purely missile armed mech. Was retired for quite a while while SRMs were useless, since I've never wanted to play a streakcat and LRMs need a tag. Now resurrected and kicking tail like the good old days.

CPLT-K2: Mjolnir. Because at the time I bought it nothing in the game swung a bigger hammer. Amusingly enough my most used outfit for it has been quad large lasers rather than big ballistics.

RVN-3L: Zephyr. Because, well, good luck catching me! Bought it after ECM dropped, elited it within a week, then immediately retired it because playing it felt like cheating. I brought it back out some for a while since they finally reined in their OPness, but these days its engine lives in my BJ-1X. I didn't name the two ****** ravens because I knew I wasn't keeping them.

CTF-2X: Nike. The goddess of victory, not the shoe. No particular connection to the mech, I just like the name.

CTF-4X: Vulcan. Continuing with the greek/roman mythology theme, what else would be more appropriate for a mech that relies on slinging excessive quantities of hot lead at its opponents? :D

CTF-1X: Athena. More or less only bought it to finish out the cataphracts, but gave it a name anyway because it's still a decent machine. Stuck with the mythology theme, but like my 2X there's no particular connection to the mech itself.

STK-3F: Mont'ka. I play Tau in the tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000, and in the Tau language 'Mont'ka' means 'killing blow'. As the stalker most suited to brawling and the one that I most often run with a mostly short-ranged loadout, the name fits.

STK-5S: R'ka'shi. Again a Tau name, this one roughly translates to 'long-strike victory', chosen since I planned to run mostly LRMs on it. I don't like pure LRM boats, though, so it's got backup weapons too. Currently unused since my 5M has become my LRM stalker.

STK-5M: Kauyon. A third Tau name, this one means 'patient hunter', as I envisioned it as my long range direct fire stalker build. Started with PPCs, srms, and medium lasers, it later evolved into a much more optimized quad ppc boat with streaks for backup. It was extremely good, but I stopped playing it right around when highlanders came out and the sniper meta really took off since I was getting so sick of seeing PPCs everywhere. It eventually got disassembled and turned into a LRM mech.

AS7-DDC: Titan. I was a bit lazy here. Liked the mythology names I had given by cataphracts, so since Atlas was one of the Titans, I named it that. I *should* have picked some particular titan, but I got lazy and wanted to get into the game quick instead of spending time pondering over the name. This one will probably get renamed when we get that ability, though I'm not sure what yet.

AS7-RS: Kronos. Continuing with the 'mythological titans' theme, but using an actual titan's name this time. No particular connection to the mech, I just liked the name.

AS7-D: Iapetus. Another titan name. This one was chosen because Iapetus was the father of the titan Atlas, and I consider the atlas-D kinda the prototypical example of an atlas.

BJ-1X: Right Bower. My blackjacks are all named after terms from the card game Euchre. The Right Bower is the Jack of the trump suit, and is the highest ranked card in play. Runs with the usual 295XL/8mlas build.

BJ-1: Lone Hand. In Euchre, a Lone Hand is when you attempt to 'go alone' in a hand, betting that you have a good enough deal to win the hand without your partner (gaining an extra 2 points if you succeed). It can also refer to a hand of cards well suited to such an attempt, usually consisting of both Bowers plus several other trump. I run it with an XL235, 3 jets, and an ac20/3mlas. This is my favorite of the blackjacks.

BJ-3: Dutchman. It's a slang term for having both Bowers (the jack of the trump suit and the other same-colored jack) in your hand. Usually runs with a pair of PPCs and some medium lasers.

Thank you for the post! You've put a lot of thought into your names and they're very interesting. When the Jagers first came out, I had an AC/40 that I named Mjolnir, but once I realized the cheesiness of the build (and started seeing them everywhere) I dismantled it.

I try and name my mechs after weapons, and name them in such ways that the names haven't already been used up in later mech names. Things like Hammer, Anvil, Dart, etc, are off my list of names for those reasons.

COM-1D : Qatar. A quick punching weapon that can be surprisingly dangerous and painful. After Trialing this mech and enjoying how it felt, I named it after the weapon because....well, appropriate. I'm still debating whether even need to change the weapons, that's how effective it was for me.

CN9-AL : Gladius. The standard Roman soldier's sword. I named the mech for its reliability, simplicity of design, and the level of damage it could inflict. The mech I run has a powerful short range strike, which I felt worked for the Gladius's spirit, as it was a powerful short range weapon itself. As it had a longer range than the Qatar, I felt that was appropriate too. Felt the AL's laser set was much like a cutting blade, slicing across foes with a high degree of skill and accuracy.

I was raised Catholic and loved the sound of Latin phrases. Being a Davonian i find that these fit very well, below are some of the better ones.

Cataphract 4X = Pater Noster (latin for Our Father as in the prayer) because with that much Dakka Dakka everyone will be saying our fathers if they survive.

Ilya Mumonts = Nil Timeant (fear nothing in latin)

Stalker 5m = Candidus Lux (Latin for Radiant Light, it is a 5LL boat)

Misery = Exitium (Latin for destruction)

Catapult C4 = Adamas Umbra (latin for steel shade, its a LRM boat)

I'll name some of my mechs that DID have some serious names thought out for it.

AWS-9M: My very first mech. I thought I could go back and name my mech after buying it, but...well, didn't expect that I can't. T__T

Atlas AS7 D-DC, BAOLONG. Went for a Chinese name, which I tried to translate to English. Supposed to mean Violent, Furious Dragon. Or the Dragon Tyrant.

Catapult A-1: SPOOKY. Named after the AC130 Gunship. Just raining down a world of pain when up close and personal. This was before the srms was nerfed. >__>

Awesome AWS-8Q: LAGANN. Took it from the epic mech battle from Gurren Lagann. <__< This mech was my powerhouse for ages, before the Stalkers came along and store our jobs, and before the poptarting made popular by the Highlanders. This mech worked wonders, especially with the 6 Large Lasers, or the 4PPC version until the Heat Nerf.

Awesome AWS-8R: GREYHOUND. Named for its role in spotting enemy mechs, and then raining missiles upon those that are unfortunate to be below it.

Catapult CPLT-K2: ARMSFORT. Named for being a threat with ballistics, with its torso twist good enough to engage targets from almost any angle.

Jagermech JM6-DD: HELLFIRE. Takes ballistic threat even further, into the realm of DAKKA DAKKA.

Jenner JR7-F: SPARROW. A speedster, to perform hit and run tactics and weave through enemy fire like a bird.

Awesome AWS-8T: RED STORM. For coring enemy mechs with a storm of PPC firepower.

Hunchback HBK-4P: OVERHEATER. Because the damn thing overheats so damn often. Dx

Just a few of mine going from memory - All my mechs are given a name, and all the varients within a chassis are named along a theme, be it 8-bit baddies or whatever.

My favorite mech of all time (the Angry Hopper)'s name was used throughout all MW games, my Timberwolf in MW2 was called the Angry Hopper too (well, that's what I named the custom variant in it's relatively crude mechlab).

Jenner;
The Angry Hopper
Wee Hopper
Mad Hopper

Cicada;

Skippy
Flipper

Jager;
Trogdor (1 big arm AC20)

Phract;
Bowser (3D, spits fireballs & jumps)
