This sensation gets underlined by remarks of WoL guys to crtitical posts. In fact, Allen Wren is the first one on the last few pages to appreciate other approaches. I am pretty afraid of where this is going ...
I appreciate that someone actually read my post enough to actually see the words involved. However, let me do my best to provide you with the goon perspective here, and why my various teammates are reacting the way they are to some of the points being raised. From where we're sitting, we're dealing with not two, as it would seem, but three or even four main talking points:
A: The game needs to be fixed for reasons X, Y and Z, and hopefully the town hall, with full community involvement will spur on a new golden age of shooting robots. This is the perspective that led to the creation of this meeting.
B: Reasons X, Y, and Z are not applicable because of points 1, 2, and 3. This is a wholly acceptable viewpoint, one we welcome, and one we wish to hear raised at the meeting itself.
C: The game is fine and you're wrong and/or bad for having the meeting. This is a non-productive viewpoint, and is what is causing some of the goons in the thread to become agitated. If the game is fine, tell us exactly how it is fine. The meeting can only be enriched by varying viewpoints backed up with reasonable data. However, instead of providing these opposing viewpoints (as with those raising point B above), they are content to take a dump on what we're trying to do.
D: Goons are bad. This is the thing that we hear most often. We're fairly used to it, in fact. We've explained our position until we're blue in the face and still we hear the same old "what they did to EVE they'll do to us" panic attacks. The SomethingAwful forums community (goons) are thousands upon thousands of various flavors of internet nerd. Very little unites us beyond having paid ten dollars for the opportunity to chat on a forum where we know that if someone is being a [REDACTED], they'll get kicked out. That's it. Even within the Games forum, where our MWO thread resides, there are cultures and subcultures, and often a goon involved in one aspect or game will never see or hear of another. Goonswarm/goonfleet is not Starfleet Dental. Starfleet Dental is not Ye Olde Goon Squade. The Word of Lowtax is neither YOGS, GS nor SD. If you seek to paint us with the brush of other people whom we've never met, then that's your own business. Suffice to say, you're not helping by picking fights with us that way. If you've got a problem with the Word of Lowtax, tell us what it is, and we can deal with it with at least a modicum of professionalism. Elsewhere.
While points A and B are both equally useful in terms of advancing the dialogue about the state of Mechwarrior Online, points C and D are what the goons in this thread are becoming annoyed with and raising a bit of a fuss about. We are here, in this thread, and in the town hall meeting, to talk about the game. No more, no less. Picking fights about irrelevant topics does nothing but get us all riled.
I'm an Agitation Analyst. I understand these things.
Hope to see you all tomorrow.
