Contrary to a lot of players in MWO, I never played anything Battletech related prior to MWO. My buddy Adrian Steel is a long time fan of the lore and introduced me to MWO. With that, he gave me a brief background of the lore along with some early piloting tips and away we played. I loved the game from the start and I got good. I joined Clan DV8, a clan that fields elite pilots from top to bottom with no exceptions whatsoever. Needless to say, I know what I'm talking about when it comes to MWO, but I'm not too versed with regards to Battletech lore.
What I believe is going to happen is that when Clan mechs are introduced, 4 of them will fight against 8 IS mechs, or 6 vs 12. I propose that only high Elo players should be allowed to pilot Clan mechs.
My reasoning is as follows:
Clanners in the lore as I understand them are genetically engineered to be badass Mechwarriors and they caused serious havoc to the Inner Sphere. When the Inner sphere was attacked by the clans, they were no match for them strategy and technology wise. They were feared and stomped serious face. So here we know that Clanners are amazing pilots. Would you fear a 4 man of Clan mechs piloted by players who hump buildings, can't hit the broad side of a barn, and run off by themselves and get killed? If you Battletech {Noble MechWarriors} want to worship cannon, then cannon dictates that you let high Elo players like Clan DV8 cave your faces in with Clan mechs. You'll know full well without even needing to look at names that when you're facing a 4 or 6 man with Clan mechs, you better play your best.
How are bads supposed to face double the number of players and come out on top? Even with uber mechs, nothing victorious is going to happen while they hump buildings and fire at the ground or try to maneuver with their Grand Turismo Steering wheel. They will get facerolled fast. You need high Elo players to be a match for double their opponents. You don't need to be DV8, but you need high Elo (there is a difference of course). You can have quad gauss, but unless you can aim at mechs and not Comm Towers, you're done for. GG close.
There needs to be something to strive for in this game. Cbills and XP come easy, and many of us have hundreds of millions of Cbills that just sit there unused. By making Clan mechs only available to high Elo players, people will double their efforts in becoming Mechwarriors. This would improve the skill of the playerbase and foster a more competitive environment. Right now, bads have no incentive to become good. Rise up to the challenge and stomp face with a Daishi now (or keep charging me alone with your Atlas and get rolled again and again).
We want a challenge. Every now and then when we run into some of the better competitive leagues we have great fun. They offer a good challenge compared to non-competitive players. If we're not facing competitive teams, they simply get DV8coptered. We want all the teams we face to be better on average. By making Clan mechs only available at high Elo levels, many will vastly improve their skill levels.
That's pretty much it. I'm sure some of you will have your reservations about my proposition, but I think this is for the greater good of the game. I'd like to hear your thoughts.
GG close,
Ryan Steel
