here's my current goto cata builds

1X: Gauss 5ML 290 STD, my least favorite by far
2X: AC20, 2ML, 2SRM4 280STD
3D: standard poptart gauss erppc thingy, boring but effective
4X: 3AC5 + LL XL245
ILYA: 1AC2, 2AC5 + PPC best suppression fire build EVER

If he doesn't use PPC and Gauss, my guesses could be:

1) He's creative and doesn't want to run the flavor of the month, regardless of whether his build is worse than it needs to be.
2) He doesn't know any better.
3) He didn't have money for the upgrades yet.

If he uses PPC and Gauss, my guesses could be:
1) He does what he does because he knows its effective, and prefers to fight with the most competitive build he can then the most creative build he can come up with.
2) He follows the FOTM without neccessarily understanding why it is what it is, possible not knowing how to really get the most out of the build, but possibly eager to master it.
3) He didn't know everyone was doing it and was trying to be creative, or that were just the pats he had available.

Mine are...
1X: AC20, 5ML, STD335. One of my most effective mechs by far
2X: AC20, 2ML, 2SRM4+Artemis, Large laser, STD250 engine. Very nice brawler
3D: 2xGauss, 4 small lasers, XL 260. They see me rollin', they hatin'.
4X: 4AC5 + 1 ML, XL250. Another of my most effective mechs.
ILYA: 3 UAC5 + 3 small pulse lasers, XL300. My best cataphract. This thing is OP, plain and simple.

I like this thread. It started out as whining, and turned into a great thread full of really good CTF builds.

Weird, my Ilka right now has 3x AK/5, an EP-PPC and 2 MLs.

Psssh. Lemmings.

Mine has 8 medium Lasers and a TAG. Free thinker here, baby!!!
(OK, actually, the 7th fixed laser was annoying me, as it had to have it's own button, or trigger heat escalation. Couldn't group it with the arms, so..... TAG it is!) :D

The Mechwarrior Hipster. I was using a TAG laser with my Swayback before it was cool :)

None of my three phracts have that configuration

In fact none of mine have any of those weapons fitted, not a single one so was this a thread about how you can't tell the difference between butter and margerine..

or some other point...

The Cataphract is just a crap mech all around. Low slung arms, odd weapon placements, etc. I can't seem to find any sort of build that makes me like the damned thing.

tell that to my litany of victims.......

I prefer my Jagermechs, overall, but my Ilya is doing quite well for me.

I got tired of dieing to side torso destruction in my 4X. Yeah, the quad AC5 are nice, but they're hard to ignore. And when you have an XL engine, you WANT to be ignored. So, I pulled the ACs, dropped in a 255 STD, left the 2 MLs in... I was thinking of dropping a pair of AC10 in. As I was putting it together I didn't have the funds for the second AC10, so I figured I'd have to grind a little bit for c-bills. Then I noticed that I had a Gauss in my stockpiles. :)

It seems to work, and I'm not sure why. And I sure as hell won't question it.

yeah. The speed on the 4X really makes the issue worse, too. That's one reason I run my Ilya instead (that and Cbills) Easier to protect that XL when I am running 86 kph, and going dakka dakka with 2 ac/10 and 2 mediums. Also have run down and surprised a few Lights and Mediums who didn't realize a 70 tonner could move like that. Always sweep the leg!!!

Its just weird. Due to the Franken design, it just doesn't have any symetry. The 4X, being a Davion product, was the only one that felt balanced but it is so damned slow. Plus, it is down right fugly. Like you, I prefer the Jager but my 3D just sits in the bay collecting dust cause I don't find it worthy to bring out.

I don't have any PPC-Gauss builds, let alone PPC-Gauss Cataphracts.

I have a 4x AC5, 1 ML Dakkaphract, a 2x ERPPC, 2x ML, AC5 Marauder, and a 1x ERPPC, 2x LL, 2x LRM5 skirmisher build.

You know what? I have never bought a PPC. Probably won't for the foreseeable future either.
