I have four teamkills so far.

Two of them don't bother me the slightest bit - they were teamkillers themselves, trying to kill teammates right after the game started. They had to be put down.

The other two were "real" teamkills. The first one was with me on my Catapult C4. I tried to see how well it could do the short-range job, so I strapped two medium lasers and four SRM 6 on it. I did not know about the missile pod doors thing back then, so all my shots were delayed a bit. So I went into the fight in the narrow River City and wanted to blast an enemy in front of me with my SRMs... I pressed the fire button and just as the SRMs launched, a friendly Spider zipped past me and right into the entire salvo of 24 pre-nerf-rockets (if it does not have a guidance system, it's a ******* rocket, not a missile!), which instantly blew it up.
The other one was a cramped fight on Forest Colony. A friendly Stalker was nearly blocking my firing lane, but on his left was still a bit of room to fire on the enemy. So I shot my two large lasers... not knowing that that said Stalker would suddenly twist its more-long-than-broad torso into my lasers. I instantly diverted them away from him, but his center torso must have already been bright red - the short moment at which my lasers grazed him was enough to blow him up. I admit that this one was possibly a bit too risky and it is the only teamkill that I really regret.

Guys - thank you for the outpouring of support. Honestly, I /still/ feel stupid.

The worst part was that I /worked for it/. Like, seriously - hiding behind cover, pop-out shooting, using the gantry to block fire - this took over a minute.

OVER A MINUTE!

*facepalm*

Nobody said anything, and I still feel stupid - I swear to you all I never saw a friendly icon. That said, the stories are great, and I appreciate the morale boost.

Thanks!

My one TK was stupid, as they often are for those of us not into that kind of stuff.

Me in a Atlas standing at a crest pouring death into a half dead Stalker and all of the sudden some moron decides that stepping just in front of me and shooting was a good idea.. I didn't react fast enough and the moron became very dead.. Sadly it is very often people just goes and stand in front of teammates shooting.. Greed kills..

Sh*t happens man. I have more team kills than I'd like to admit to, but two of them make for a good story.

The first, I was playing with friends, pre-ELO when you could still drop 8 against pugs. I had the no IFF bug (no target triangles) on Frozen City, but luckily I was on voice comms with my buddies so I was relying on them for target info. One guy reports "Target in the armpit", our designation for the sheltered area on the cave side of the ridge. I switch to thermals, and spot a Dragon, and start laying into him with Gauss and Large Lasers. For some strange reason, he doesn't move, so I keep firing, thinking I'm gonna get an easy kill. All of a sudden my buddy says, " Atlas in the armpit! Damn how did he get to my internals already!" As I think to myself "what Atlas?", my buddy bites the dust... in his Dragon. I had been blasting his rear CT and punched right through. Always double check your targets...

The second one, I was in a brawler Atlas in River City. Our team had taken out their heavy hitters and were mopping up a few lights. An ally had this pesky Jenner targeted, and I could see he was about to round the corner and run straight into me. Smiling to myself, I line up my crosshairs just past the edge of the building at Jenner-height, see him pop around the corner, and BOOM! AC20 to the face! But alas, I just killed a friendly Raven that had come up from behind me to intercept the Jenner as well. And of course, it was the same guy whom I had killed in the Dragon on Frozen City....

I just tk'd a jenner on Canyon : /

Rounded a corner and saw the mech, hit R, the target brackets went around it so I shot it in the back. Turns out the red brackets were around an enemy mech on the other side of the canyon wall. Just happened to line up perfectly with my teammate : /

i play the game in window mode generally in conjunction with anime(i like multi taskin). Because game window always start at middle of screen instead where you put it i have to do it all over for each match. You gotta do it before match starts because if you dont you'll be shooting someone in the back which happened few times to me. And usualy it happens with a gauss rifle to the back no matter what you say that ****** ppl off..

But for real tk spree i once saw a guy massacre half his team because he claimed they were disconnected/afk. Basically handed the game to us since he took like 3 guys. It was really weird

I've hit team members more than a few times, sadly, but it's easy to make that mistake - don't feel bad about it. Also, when mechs are up close, the triangle can be out of sight above them, so you can miss it. Once spent over a minute fighting back to back with an ENEMY Atlas... I thought he was our Atlas (who had died in the same area) and he must have thought I was a team mate of his own in the same type of mech who died in the same area. It was only when I realized he was shooting my friends that I backed away and saw the red triangle above his head... he noticed at the same time... oops... lol

All this friendly compassion is heartening, but do not kid yourself: there are real TK present in the game, albeit they may well not cruise these boards. I've ghosted their backseat and watched them do it, and when I spoke up in team chat they were unapologetic and dared me to report them. Yes everyone inadvertently hits a teammate eventually and almost everyone has done it and is forgiving, but there are those who will unashamedly blast their fellows at the start of drop, not just once with a 'sry' like it was an accident but repeatedly. There are others who will take out the back of any who get in the way of their shot, and I mean deliberately. I know it is very irritating when over-eager pilots charge up on the opponent getting in in the way of six others maneuvering for position but, as frustrating as that is, you do NOT purposefully shoot a teammate unless you are seriously asocial. Problem for us is, some are.

Just be careful when the red triangle overlaps a friendly, especially in thermal vision.

Position yourself so you can see what you're shooting at, not just at the red triangle.

This. A thousand times this. There was a time where I thought I (in my Atlas) was flailing away at the back of what I thought was an enemy Atlas around 500m away, only to realize that the red triangle was a bit off and a barely visible blue triangle was against the sky. I was lucky I didn't end up killing the guy. To make up for it I just positioned myself close behind him to act as a meat shield and chase away the other potshotters who tried to flank him. He ended up mowing down the opposition and we won the game.

One thing that you have to watch out for is if you see the Narc beacon symbol above their mech. I ended up coming across an enemy that was close to death, so I locked on it and took him out. The next thing I see is the notification that I had team killed someone. It took me a bit to realize that Narcs will turn teammates red to you. Moral of the story memorize what the Narc symbol looks like and check the TAB screen before you go after someone with it.

i had a rather silly one. it was on river city and the whole team was clumped up going from the lower starting point to upper city. i saw something moving in upper city so i zoomed in all the way and started firing like crazy. i saw my gauss slug going down range but didn't see my er ppcs. i kept firing... still only gauss slugs. and then i got a message i had killed someone. zoomed out and saw that someone had gotten in front of my arm and was blocking my shots. totally couldn't see him while zoomed in all the way.

... and then there was the streak incident... i was in a hunchback 4sp with 2 streak 2 launchers. i had been actively persuing an enemy raven i finally got a good lock on him and launched the streaks. friendly runs in front and dies >.< none of my friends are letting me live that one down.

Oh yeah, TK'ing isn't nearly as bad now as it was during some of the early parts of closed beta. Back then, trolls of any kind were put down HARD. I had several matches where both teams would stop and jointly run down the offending player, then return to our battle lines and start things up again. Of course, that was back when there were no engine limits, the Commando had just been introduced, and the flamer bug was... scary. Oh Trollmandos, how I don't miss you.

My rambling aside, don't sweat it OP. I've had my share of TK's over the course of time. Most people just shrug it off and hope they meet you again on an opposing team. The fact that you're willing to learn is what's really important.

What about the people you accidentally nick with a low-damage gun, say an AC2 or MG just for a second, and who turn around and put an alpha strike right into your CT?

Happened to me once. I was slowly walking backwards in my Cata, firing off volleys at an approaching atlas, when an allied quad-PPC stalker got in my way. I hit him with a medium laser by accident.

He promptly stopped in the middle of battle while getting shot at, looked at me, then fired all 4 PPCs into my CT. I instantly died, he overheated and was then cored from behind by the Atlas.

i've had a couple myself. only one that comes to mind is lining up for an ac20 and 4ML to the face of a stalker i'd been fighting. hit the button for the alpha...just as a friendly hunchy corsses in front of me at near point blank range. on the opposite side of things i do find myself undercutting another friendly while trying to get out of enemy sights at times, usually i try to circle in the direction of the friendly that just fired but doesnt always work that way.

i have caused one or two though. one was brawling with an atlas when nearly dead and seeing about 40 lrms heading right for me. since one of them was going to kill me anyway i facehugged the atlas and watched the larms arc nicely into it's rear armor and kill him. then the jenner got me. other i remember was one of those last stand deals where where enemy were all in close range trying to finish me. i hopped over a cat and was taking laser fire from one of them follwing my arc. unfortunately for the cat the lasers were still firing when i got it between me and the other enemy. cat goes boom and wasn;t happy about it. i died soon after. my team liked it though...

Happened to me in my Highlander. Was lining up a shot (zoomed in) with the Gauss Rifle, and a team mate stepped in front just as I pulled the trigger - he takes a gauss to the back. I apologize... and he turns around and alpha's me to the face. He then dies since his back was to the enemy... duh... and then goes on a rant over the text line about how I'm the most worthless player ever because not only did I shoot him (once), I also apparently was hit by him a few times, which is also somehow my fault?!

While he was busy ranting, my team died, but I finished off 3 out of 5 enemy mechs at the end as the last man standing before we lost... what a nice guy...

I have been in here since closed beta and I still have bad moments! Just a week ago or so I was on Forest with a group of friends while shooting down field with a gauss and advanced zoom. I knew there was a friendly down there but it was hard to tell which was which. Then I clearly see a raven and think "Ohey an ecm raven, killll!" One shot from gauss popped it and it was team kill >,<

Once upon a time I run berserk in my Cicada CDA-2A. Totaly berserk! I notices some Stalker around my teammates and started shoot at him. I was a bit surprises when he didn't try to kill me and suddenly i noticed other mechs facing me. I stopped immediately and they had mercy on me when i apologized. As a penance I killed 2 enemies

The other time the worst thing happened in River City: our Atlas intentionally attacked teammates in their backs. Before everyone got out of the platform around the dropship 3 of our team was dead. Only sweeping left after this. And everyone said "god bless the enemy" when they got that sonof^$%&$#.

I guess I'm old or maybe I'm naive but I like to believe there FF and TK are two seperate issues.
For me if someone says they killed someone with Friendly Fire it doesn't bug me. If someone says they run around TKing people then I have an issue with it and I'll leg you!

yea I accidentally killed a team mate last night ;) felt bad especially cuz he was a good player and all up in the fight. had some triangle overlappage, had spun to fight one guy, turned and looked like an enemy stalker but it was actually a raven right in front of him that was the enemy. I basically helped the raven polish off my own teams stalker ;( horrible. horrible.
