Harmony Gold doesn't have any paws on the Dougram show, and likewise for Crusher Joe where the Locust was inspired from. These "unseen" were voluntarily pulled by FASA, to avoid any potential lawsuit, unlike the Harmony Gold stuff where it did happen. The owners of the Dougram show (Nippon Sunrise, aka Sunrise Productions, which makes a lot of mecha series including Gundam) appeared to have given the green light for PGI, so long the new designs are not copies from the ones in the show.
The fact that the Griffin and Wolverine were 55 ton mechs, along with the Shadowhawk, isn't PGI's fault, but because of the Battletech lore. So in choosing a Light, Medium, Heavy and Assault package, two have to give, and the slot went to the Shadowhawk. However, once added, probably took PGI a little while to realize the obvious, the family won't be complete without the Griffin and the Wolverine, even though they are redundant in terms of specs.
But its a family and it must be complete.
I'm personally putting my money in, on top of the Overlord package.
There are two other Dougram mechs that made into BT, but we won't be seeing them because they are quad legs.

This is how the last remaining 55 tonner feels.

It's an F2P game... where else are they supposed to get money, exactly? Furthermore, with weight limits coming in for drops, Medium and lighter Heavy 'mechs will be about the 'average' tonnage in a drop. These will be useful machines.

I'd like that in a few mechs. Marauder, Locust, a number of others.
But I'd also like my Cataphract with its rear mounted lasers, my Quickdraw with its twin forward and twin rear-ward facing lasers. My Atlas K with the twin MPL on the back.
Oh, don't forget the flip-able arms on the Blackjack. Nothing like shooting that guy behind you by flipping your arms.

Anyways, these mechs look great! As I tend to favor medium mechs to begin with, I'm really liking these additions. I appreciate the Phoenix era medium mech's focus on being swift harassing units. That's a great role for a medium chassis, and I look forward to supporting a lance of Thunderbolts and Battlemasters in my Phoenix medium chassis.

I remember the Wolverine and Griffin from the Battletech novels. But I never really gravitated towards them.
As for all the drama I think if you watch the official video of Within Temptation's What Have You Done it would sum up your feelings nicely.
I'm not angry with PGI nor IGP. Heck, I can't even play the game, yet. But I'm not much for these two mediums.
