The box looks familiar, but not sure what edition it was that my brother had stashed away (wouldn't let me play with it way back then)
The type of terrain that has hex shaped base is definately handy..
The wargame club I used to go to years ago used geohex (I think it was) since a place that made it was in the same neighborhood and people that worked at geohex would play at the gameclub...They also donated a LOT of stuff to the club (mostly just barely defective enough to use, but not sell)
They made felt mats of different colors(hexed and non hexed). hills, rolling hills, cliffs, mountains...that came in level 1 or level 3 I think it was...one of the things I will never forget.....
We had a board that had up to level 6 mountains (2 level 3 pieces stacked but not fully covering each other so a person could jump up 3 levels at a time). and on one side there was a full cliff, and someone was careless enough to hug the bottom of the cliff while my 100 ton mech with jump jets was up top sniping mechs in the distance....The next turn, he stayed there again..I guess trying to keep out of my LOS. so I jumped on him from 6 levels above him
...... I wish I had a picture of everyone's faces when I announced it.
Unfortunately I didn't take out his head. (only hit it once) The damage spread all over the place.
Another event that I would of LOVED a picture of is when we were playing in a BIG 5 feet by 9 feet (our usual tabletop size) CITY.
One of my team mates. (very odd, think outside of the box kind of guy) I see him start to count hexes in his mind, I can tell because of the way he is looking at the board and nodding is head...Then I look down the street from his dasher and there is an enemy mech.
At first I was thinking, why is he counting hexes for. no way he can get into his firing range... Then he finishes counting, and BIG smile crosses his face, biggest smile I have ever seen on this guy.
Then he turns on his MASC goes 19 hexes and performs a turn......That turn makes him do a pilot skill check which he of course fails from a high modifier. Which causes him to SKID, you skid for as many hexes as you moved. at about 18 or so hexes later his mech rams into the enemy mech making a 37 (or so, don't remember what exactly, but it was close to 40) hex charge lol...The enemy mech DIES (it was already a bit damaged from a mech flanking him) and the dasher is still ALIVE, but barely (missing a bunch of armor and right side lol) and lived through the rest of the match...We won
Was one of the craziest moves I have seen...If he missed just one of those rolls it would of ended up REALLY bad for him
