Enthusiastic indeed, about the Orion, which is a mech I know from Battle Tech and the hardpoints look awesome on paper. But then you try to make it work and you can't. This doesnt mean you wouldn't be able to make one or the other game 3 kills and 650 damage, but I am used to score high, very high and with this mech it's a pain in the ***. You're fighting an uphill battle, because you get destroyed so quickly. A shame.

As a Centurion pilot who scores usually around 300-400 damage on average, I find myself enjoying this 'mech. 2 LL and 2 UAC5's with 125 rounds of ammo OR 2 meds, 2UAC5 (100), and an LRM 15 (180). I score around 300-500 damage on average. not the best, but certainly not the worst either. Plus we'll probably see more Orions once weight limits come into effect preventing teams that consist of nothing but assaults and heavies from constantly appearing. Now if only WoT would do something similar... oh well.

Currently running this setup, bit of a modification from the Christmas build (kinda preparing for the inevitable U/AC5 nerf):

http://mwo.smurfy-ne...b4c61c368eeb076

300XL
Endosteel
2 Large Lasers
SRM6/Artemis (100)
LRM20/Artemis (360)
LBX-10 (45)

10 DHS

This might work also very nicely with slight variation on the K variant (exchanging the Large Lasers for 4 Medium Lasers)
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...4f725f43e3da551

Runs hot, if you use the Large Lasers too often, but heat is manageable thanks to LB10 and all the missiles. I play aggressively strictly from the second line with the LRM and Large lasers and defensively with the LB10X and SRMs (using the large lasers as the heat allows for defense). Works a little more consistent for me than the Christmas build, because it doesn't require the face time, that the U/AC needs.

Best score so far:

Strong one Magnusson. With a 325XL you can fit another heatsink tho!

I agree with Autobot.

After waiting a year for this mech to be released (my favorite canon ride) it is VERY underwhelming.

I had to play around to find a build that worked for me.

I ended up with a 2 PPC, 4SSRM, AC/2, 340XL build. Combined the RA AC2/PPC on right mouse button, SSRM's on the middle button and LA PPC on the left mouse button. Little hot on the AC2 side but with some patience it did very well for me.
Had over 750 damage in my best matches.

Well, the Protector with a modified loadout works well for me.
PROTECTOR

Yes, it screams "shoot my gauss", but with a ct that big, i almost ever end up either alive or cored at the end of the match.
The Gauss and ERLL bring a nice punch at range and never run hot.
And if engaged at medium to short range, ich can switch to the MLAS or core my already damaged enemies with 12 artemis guided SRMS to the chest.

If using the stock Protector build, protect your assault mechs flank, at range hit them and twist torso to spread dmg, walk into med range and manage heat using all weapons, under 300m only use med las gaus and srms to finish off, just my opinion.

this build
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...6faaf6140284850

is a great flank supporter, personnally used it myself so props for sayjin for this!

on my ON1-K and ON1-VA i use them as brawlers/range support. LL and DPS ballistics are nice for XL engines, AC20 and ML for brawlers.

The CT on this chassis is big, but its no worse than a catapult or cataphract imo. on the non protector variants, your arms are a tad bigger to be used for shielding. This is not an atlas, so don't play it like one! Support those big guys and your fights will be a ton better. I have been zombied 8 times in my VA/K chassis so far, after doing 400 dmg supporting the assault mechs flanks, i can be happy. Know the Orion Role!

Edit: I know the Orion was the mini assault mech in TT/BT lore and had the ability for C3 slaving, but here, its not in that role so do not try to do it, unless in structured fights where its the biggest!

i run that K variant solo, love it as assault support. the other is great, if only you have a group imo. but it definately will work!

Yea man, it has such an altered role at the moment, it is a shame. Any change to weapon limitations varied on mech type would make this one shine, maybe even weight restrictions would do it. It has a niche right now in my 12mans and lance drops, you just gotta stick to it lol

My most recent Protector build:

XL engine 350
AMS, 1 ton ammo
11 double heat sinks
Endo-steel

Torso:
2x AC/5 +5 tons of ammo
2x SRM6/artemis +2 tons of ammo
1x Medium laser

Arms:
2x Medium laser

400 armor. Taken mostly from arms and legs (people always go straight for your CT)

I know I'm going against my own advise of: Get a LRM20 if you get an orion otherwise get a Victor. But really the smaller frame and just about same amount of fire power is working out very well for me.

Anyone know how to take screen shots btw? I just pulled a 1,2k dmg (granted part of this dmg was from finding a stray LRM boat atlas behind their lines, he only had an ER large laser for defense), 4 kill 4 assist game with the build I posted before. No idea how I was alive at the end haha, every part was stripped of armor and in the orange or red, no ammo left for streaks or any of the ACS, just 3 MLs left. Felt like a centurion or something hahah...died in the end though, but it was overdue :)

After trying around a couple of other builds again (the AC20 standard engine brawler one with more SRMs for example), I came back to the old build I was running and found it still kicks the most *** for me.

These are going to be my starting builds for the K, V and VA:
http://mwo.smurfy-ne...9c4688128a654f3

I like the V on paper as my dedicated heavy lrm boat.

What do you guys recommend for a third Orion after the K and V? I like the three energy hardpoints on the M but the VA can do SRM death fists. I would certainly use the 300XL but the CASE, NARC and LBX-10 are junk. I am conflicted.

I'd say take the VA, slap alot of SRMS in the arms and wreak the havoc! Think someone already posted this build, but here it is again: http://mwo.smurfy-ne...bf73b011046f031

Just ran with it a couple of games, pretty damn good.

struggling with my protector but then ive also not bought the other 2 variants to elite up saving my cash etc(20 mil) for phoenix drop.

Playing 2 LL lbx10 and 2srm4+art has a great punch but maybe the lbx range is limiting me in dps.
I also find people target the orions quick as thier armor seems quite lacking compared to cents or certain other mechs(probably the large ct sucking in damage).

Yeah the CT is kinda a bullet magnet, and the mech itself is rather large too for it's weight class (tall as hell). Cents are zombie kings, can't really compare with them in terms of survival, but with some twisting, making sure you are not surrounded etc, you can survive fairly well in this thing even with an XL engine.

If you were running a ST engine then I suggest you switch to an XL, like you noticed your ct will be eating the hits anyways, might as well turn faster and move faster, use cover (objects and bigger mechs) with that speed and watch your survival rate as well as dmg go up (since you can chase and flank alot better).
