First of all, Gauss is my favorite weapon, always has been.

I can understand why people would want to make it easier to use, but you need to understand why those of us who have taken the time to practice with it enough to reliably hit at most ranges would be annoyed at attempts to make it easier.

Let's say in real-life, I want to shoot a powerful bow, but I'm not strong enough to pull it back long enough to aim.
Some people would say, "Dammit, I guess I better start working on those arms, so I can handle a bow like that."
Others would contact the manufacturer, asking them to reduce the draw weight, so that they could enjoy the bow as well.

Understandably, the first group of people would be pretty annoyed if the manufacturer gave in, and weakened all future models of that bow, to accomodate those who didn't have as much patience to fix themselves instead of the bow.

This is why this topic will often cause division among players. There's legitimate points to be made, but at the end of the day, PLENTY of pilots have gotten great with the gauss, through good old fashioned practice (which includes early frustrations and failures.) When I can average 400+ per round in my Gauss Cicada with no backup weapons, (and I know many pilots are better than me with gauss,) and consistently outperform enemy LRM boats and Clan Mechs, I just have a really hard time feeling like the weapon is unbalanced.

If anything, I would have voted for the poll option that said, "No, and overcharging may blow your **** to hell."

The current implementation of the Gauss is a terrible design. Either give me a fully charged weapon, ready to fire at the pull of a trigger with the drawback that the weapon is volatile and could explode, or build a safety feature into the weapon so that while it must be charged before firing, it is less likely to explode.

In my opinion, a Gauss Rifle that must be charged before firing and always explodes when hit does not meet acceptable standards for a military weapon.

No heat vs low HP
Speed vs charge

Whats is the advantage for having heat when charging?
Maybe charging heat vs armor piecing?

Charge-up makes it only worth it if your mech can carry 2xGauss. 2xGauss is very powerful, always was. 1xGauss is just a mech Rifle.

I voted yes no penalty as well. I had literally quit the game a year ago or more over this issue and I still hate the how the Guass works. I rather it be held for as long as I holding it the trigger or do a two click activation as in first click to charge, second to fire.

I just don't understand the people that think they're good because they still use the gauss and can deal with the charge up timer. Good for you. Is there any freaking logical reason you should have to deal with that timer, other than some clowns cried about dying to the weapon system and PGI decided you needed to deal with some other asinine nerf to discourage its use? Oh that didn't work lets try a 5.5 second cool down on top of the exploding weapon system, warm up and excessive tonnage at least for IS mechs... Clearly the 5.5 second cool down virtually removed the gun from the game and got dialed back .5 seconds, thank you oh merciful overlords, but the poll at the beginning says it all. Most people apparently don't care, as long as they not getting sniped by gauss rifles every round so good luck getting weapon balance from people who have absolutely no incentive to give it to you.

sure...go ahead, give me my rapid shot gauss/ ac2 combo back, i wouldn´t mind to have the 15 damage ultrarange high precission no-heat autocannon back...

still, the charge mechanism isn´t that big of a deal as many people make of it...

i got a feeling you aren´t asking for balance but for easy high damage...

When they added the charge-up they boosted the travel time from 1500 mps to 2000 mps which makes the Gauss pretty accurate to 1000 meters. It is not so accurate at 1500 mps travel time, more like an AC5. I have fooled around with 2xGauss on a Warhammer long enough to learn it. It's pretty devastating to mechs even at short range. If you survive to the end of the match (doubtful with 2xBombs in the STs of a mech with an XL engine) then you can clean up by finishing off the damaged mechs. I learned it on a joystick, which is slow to track, but accurate.

I still say a single Gauss should have no charge-up though. I can't see a problem with that and a 5.5 second recycle.

Although I have learned the charge-up and aiming I still have to agree with you that the charge-up is a terrible idea for a MechWarrior game and the Gauss Rifle should be balanced in some alternative way. Right now it's been made into a Mech sniper rifle like the apocryphal Rail Gun, but to do sniper level damage you need 2xGauss and few mechs have this capability. Just make it a mech Rifle as was intended in Battle Tech.

Plus almost every map in MWO is a brawler map so having a Sniper Rifle equipped mech is really not supported, in fact you could easily assume PGI wants to discourage long range combat over the new player favored brawling range combat. PGI adds Polar Highlands and half the players want it removed because they can't adapt their brawler rigs. rofl!

Guess if the gauss gun was easy to use all would be useing it.Cause it dont have much heat to over heat our mechs.Nobody would be useing ac/10 or 20 no more cause of the heat.Posted Image

Ballistics don't generate much heat per DPS and what is the sin in preferring the Gauss over an AC10? The Gauss just makes a better choice when you can only carry one ballistic and an AC20 won't fit.

The charge-up was added just to remove the Gauss Rifle from game-play so it is the worst kind of nerf there is.

What's been bugging me for a long time about the MWO Gauss Rifle compared to the one from the BT game is that it explodes even though there is no charge.

in BT the GR can be turned off which means no explosion should the weapon be hit.

While the mwo GR even if it isn't charged it explodes when it shouldn't.

so I say ether give it back its auto charge or remove the explosion when not charged, it is as simple as that.

and no I don't use mwo grs nor would I use them in the future should they become self charged again.

Doubt its any revelation, but yes the Grid Iron still blows goats... Thanks pgi for nerfing mechs into non-use/existence and perpetually giving us new ones to f'n pay for.

Too complicated as most other balance changes. Throw out ghost heat and load time of the gauss and change weapons to have armour penetration values and damage separately. This allows to make weapons more distinct and improve balance.
It would be enough to reduce the efficiency of the gauss by reducing ammo to the gauss, 9xERPPC builds arent effective...
