I very rarely equip AMS on my mech, because for me, the best AMS in the game are tall rocks/buildings.

I'll stick one on anything that goes slower than 60kph.
However, I pilot mostly medium so that situation is rare.

I do always try to use it but sometimes there's just no room of I don't feel like playing musical chairs with my 3 AMS units so I just use cover like a smart pilot should.

Always. Even when I'm stripping a mech down to nothing (for a rebuild) I put/leave AMS in. As far as I'm concerned, it's as standard a piece of equipment as gyros and actuators.

I know it seems a bit underwhelming on it's own, but it puts a BIG smile on your face when that mean old LRM 9001 starts flying in at you, and not one missile touches you because your AMS, and the AMS on all your teammate's mechs start blaring to life. :D

you can also consider it support equipment for other mechs. Suppose you've got a friendly blackjack with missiles incoming and no AMS. Get close to him and let your AMS protect him.

Well put. An AMS isn't just for you.

I keep them on most 'mechs usually. A couple of them can really dent incoming LRMs.

Almost always and i wish more people would equip it for maximum synergy.

There is some builds tho where i simply can´t squeeze it in.

There are some builds where you just can't fit them. I get that.

What bothers me is the Elite ROFLStomp Competitive Pilots giving advice to New Players along the lines of... "If you have spare room use it" or "A few people on your team should have it" or "Use Rocks for Cover".

New Players play PUG matches. In PUGs there are 3 teams, the Red Team, YOU, and Blue Allies. You are responsible for making sure your team has AMS :D Unless you are in a Cicada, Light Mech, or your Medium mech hits 90kph+. Then you don't need one :D

I start my builds with an Engine, AMS, and Full Armor then I work things out from there.

I stopped using AMS right around when Repair and Rearm was still around. They nerfed LRMs badly enough that it cost more to replace the ammo on AMS then it did the armor that said missiles damaged. Way way more.

Haven't looked back. I also used LRMs quite a bit off and on so I know how they work. With that experience I know how to avoid them outright. I've been able to avoid LRMs going only 45kph consistently even with their speed buff. So I don't see what the big deal is.

I'm sure AMS is pretty useful for its tonnage. But for my playstyle, I don't really need it. Poll seems to have a pretty even spread. Some use them all the time, some never, and some here or there. Judging by that, I'd say they are balanced currently. But that is just an observation, and not a full opinion. I can't make an opinion on them since I don't really use them, nor need them.

it's better than a 1.5 tons of armor because it can cover your teammates and it doesn't fall off like armor. It would be better if it worked more effectively on SRMs but I can see how that would be tough to program.

I try very hard to fit it on any mechs that are either too slow to reliably find cover or with which I don't want to have to run for cover.

AMS is mandatory unless you have ECM. It's a stupid way of balancing LRMs that removes one of the cooler aspects of the game (missles).

I'd use them every game if they removed all the rocks, hills and trees but until that day I'm missile proof without one.

Disappointing, everything is evenly matched. Myself never use it. The only time I regret it is usually on Alpine/Caustic.

Remember that AMS also will target SRMs and SSRMs along with LRMs. Even if it takes out 2 missiles that 4-5 damage that it is saving you.

I use AMS mostly with heavies and assaults, less on scouts. Last night I actually ran out of ammo twice with my atlas-k (was running 3 tons of ammo and dual AMS). One of the few times I've seen that many LRMs an entire PUG match. I doubt any of my PUG group had AMS other than one founder atlas.
