Thanks for your kind comments everyone! The lens only goes to F32, most of these were shot at F9 and a few at F3.2. I might be misunderstanding what you're saying but stopped down to F32 would give me more depth of field which would allow the right shoulder/arm to be more in focus. That wouldn't necessarily change the field of view though.

Another consideration I had to keep in mind is that the constant lasers act + fog act as a secondary light source. Stopping down to F32 would mean about a 4-6 sec shutter. The fog being lit up by lasers for that long will become a colored cloud in front of the mech rather than atmospheric smoke.

After doing this, CG lasers might have been the path of least resistance lol.

Field of view is fine, was just thinking depth of field. If the whole mech is in focus, it looks more like you're shooting a large object than a small one, as the narrow band of focus you have implies that it's a small object captured from up close instead of a large one from far away, where most of the scene would be in focus.

But yeah, I hadn't considered that the fog would be in motion, was just thinking that you had a tripod there and that would make the long shutter time irrelvant. I think the detail in the fog is more than worth the tradeoff with the shallow focus, now that I think about it.

Me too! I got a big poster print of it. One of telkin's photo orders got messed up so I got it tacked onto his order for free. :D Detail holds up at poster size.

It is 3D printed. You can read about it here:

And then painted.

If I wouldn't know the background behind this photo I would say:

Sir, you got some really big bonsai tree!

Really nice pics, well done. What are you using for the lasers?

Have you thought about making a battle scene style one where the lasers are actually hitting the mech? Would be awesome to try it all without any CG effects, like using phosphor or matches to create small explosions type effects on or near the model (without damaging it obviously).

The lasers are just a generic green laser and a Wicked Laser Spyder III Artic set on low.

I prefer no pyrotechnics inside the house... :P

Sorry I meant more like careful placement of small flames (hence the matches) to make it look more like a battle.

Also I didn't mean phosphor, I meant Magnesium (badly remembered science lessons): http://www.scienceco...ches-P6358.aspx

Could create some quite cool effects.

But either way very nice work.
