Here are 10 reasons of why it is good to play ISW instead of waiting for CW:

1. ISW already exists for uh..10+ month's now
2. In ISW you control Systems, not anonymous borders
3. In ISW you may fight for planets - even as a house unit
4. In ISW, there is a strategic level included...Jump Ships, Drop ships, market place...
5. Mercs can already be contracted for anything from a simple raid up to planetary conquest
6. Your matches have a reason and a consequence... immediately
7. Drop restrictions are generated by the league for both teams. So no more crashing into 1200 tonns of Atlai unexpected
8. You may use the BT-Lore names for your units as well as self made ones
9. We already have Clans ( ok ok no clan mechs as we play MWT and MWO though)
10. You dont need to pay a dime ( not even a virtual one) to form up a unit

I studied this the other day, but on the website, not the googledocs...bookmarked and will read soon. I was kin of confused where the merc unit fit in. It seems like a lot of house affiliations being the main focus, with only a passing acceptance of mercs...guess I'm just not understanding it enough. Any insight would be appreciated.

Nope, Merc units can be contracted by house units for a certain time and a certain goal to accomplish and of course will get a salary if goal acomplished.

While the contracting interface is not yet there ( still have to program it) all the needed stuff is already in the databse. So a merc unit a house unit agree to a contract, just PM or mail me with the contract details and i will feed it to DB.

So considering there are only a limited number of houses, and I'd say most 'clans' currently are merc units. Under the rules, what incentive does the merc unit have in this? What is the 'goal' of the merc unit? I'm not a lore jumkie, but I know the basics at least. For example, If my merc company would join this, what would our role be other than 'filler'. I'm not sure the draw to non-purist groups. I'm just not understanding I guess.

Well no, you cannot spend real world money for a insta land dropship or something, sorry.
But you can of course donate any amount of money you want to the development team ( me). :-)

Mercs are not fillers
Mercs offer their services and get hired.
For example: The GDL is hired to conquer the World X for Unit Y with in a timeframe Z and will get a salary of $$.
so the GDL goes there, conquers the planet and earns the salary.
And of course I will keep track of Contracts fulfilled and not, to create a MBRC board to look on and see which is the best damn merc unit in the Inner Sphere.

Oh and to add: Being a merc unit here does not mean you have to be in Spherewars.
While on MWO, Canon Units are not playable, in Spherewars we have ahhh 425 of them waiting to be led to victory!
And more will come, once I have time to add more. But especially with merc units its a bit tricky since the info about them is split over so many sources....

Ok...simply put...

Win Conditions for Houses = Total Planetary Conquest....correct?

Win Conditions for Merc Units = What?
I.E.....
The Merc unit who's earned the most money through contracts
The Merc unit who happens to be contracted to the winning House at the time of Victory?

This, in its simplest form...is my first boggle. I'm definately not trolling, and we 'may' be interested...but every war has an objective, and just want to be clear on the Merc Corps End-Game.

Mr 144

Edit: Or are you reffering to 'mercs' as lone wolf merc, and not entire Corps?

The Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth did not exist in 3050, per se.

First of all, leading the merc mbrc rating should not the the worst thing to accomplish for a merc unit.
Getting the richest is also nice.
Getting awardet an own Planet for their faithfull duty to a contractor is also a good thing to reach.

But since you ask... what do you think a merc units goal should be?

And I DO NOT refer to lone wolf players when talking about mercs!

I know. The map is a bit older than that it is actually 303x

Should amend page 9 of your Spherewars document then to perhaps read "Federated Commonwealth (House Davion)" and "Federated Commonwealth (House Steiner)".

Having these two factions listed as they are right now is like talking about the North and the South in the American Civil War as two entirely different countries.

Steiner and Davion were one unified nation in 3050 with one royal family.

I have no idea on goals...I know very little about lore, I just shoot stuff...hence a merc ^_^ I just want to be clear on the purpose of a Merc Corp joining in on this. I guess, if we're just talking theoreticals...I'd like to play both sides against the middle in true merc fashion, and come out on top of the houses themselves in a perfect world...but that's not really relevant...you're the one setting the rules, and I.m just curious where we'd fit.

Have you read Forgoten Realms Books? Totally different Genre I know, but I'm thinking a Bregan D'aerthe type goal...for the lack of a Lore based equivalent in my limited knowledge.

Doesn't really matter all to much to me, as long as I understand the concepts enough to pitch it to my Corps.

Mr 144

Edit: 5th Fedcom Rat...You're a Nerd <_< (not like I'm not...in a different genre) LOL

Who told you spherewars is 3050? :-)
No, the reasoning behind how it is is simple:
The faction names currently properly reflect the situation on the map, despite this map is not 3050.

But if you get me a table of all FRR planets, I will gladly change colors of the FS and LC Planets to Yellowish blue stuff and change the names of these two factions accordingly to FC Steiner and FC Davion.

But since these data where not available to me in any format that could be easily imported to a database, the faction names will stay do reflect the map, not a year the map is not from.

So until I can get the data, consider Spherewars to be 3038 or something around that.

But since you seem to know the lore... i need a ner.. err helper with all the lore data, as you see... ;-)

Hehe, once a house owes your merc unit enough to make you lord of a planet....you could start conquering planets on your own bill.... ;-)

Um, there's no need for this, and your league will be pointless in around a year.

as it is, there won't be much around soon if coolant makes it into the game, and many players will probably just stop playing.

Seriously though, Spherewars, while an awesome idea... there's no point for it. CW will make it history and leagues are pretty much dead due to ELO rankings as it sits.

Thank you for letting us know your opinion.
I am very sorry that you do not agree with the inclusion of coolants into MWO. I do not like them too, so I feel the pain.

And for the rest, that is what this little project is to be. a gap filler until CW. And if growing popular maybe even an alternative. Who says you cannot fight in 2 virtual wars?

I for one who waited years for a half baked planetary to come into MWLL, am happy to see not one but two come into MWO at the same time. I've signed our unit up and look forward to others doing the same. As much as it may be a rough beginning i'm confident the passion and experience this community has and those behind these leagues will make them worthwhile.

I've applied to take the role of a merc unit Grayson, Waco Rangers, hopefully we won't step on anyone's toes with them and can use the more than likely slow start of the league to ensure where we position ourselves is in prime space for high activity early on.

From what I can tell, this is much more "realistic" than simply a game with win conditions.
The goal for a Merc Unit is to accomplish the mission, collect payment, and start the next contract. That's it, that's all.

After reading through this ok great your better off resurrecting NBT or MWL but you all have a problem YOU CANT PICK A MAP GROUP UP AND DROP IN MWO DERP. So what you going to resurrect MechWarrior4 Mercenaries' and play on Gameranger? Ill go for that idea as long as you leave out that crappy MEKTEK MOD and play PR1?

No Merc unit would take a contract to get paid after the job is done. Too easy for clients to "walk away" without paying. Especially given that most Houses have better numbers than most Merc units.

Half up front and half at delivery as a minimum.

Or are we talking about Mercnet? where a third party holds the cash in escrow? That would be the only way.
