Remind me: Why do we need this feature again?
Considering this game (just like any other free online-game) has its fair amount of self-appointed "jokers", you might as well include a soundboard-key that plays fart-noises on everyone's front-ends.

If you want instant action, play CoD or sumthin like that.
Some people actually want that time to set up groups, talk about a tactic and stuff.

Riiight.
EDIT:
Just FYI: The only "tactics" that have been discussed thus far in my matches were "wake up guys! press the ready button!!"
You want to discuss tactics and coordinate with team-mates? Download TS and drop a 4-man. I use radio-chat for stuff like calling out contacts or calls for help, too. But in my experience, people just don't read the damn thing.

No one actually discusses anything except yelling at people who don't press ready or complaining about the feature.
Then someone will take command who is evidently not suited to the role. There should be a minimum GXP or 'games played' limit before you are allowed to take command.
Who thought of this and why? Was there a problem before that needed addressing? Is this a small step towards CW?
Why is it all so annoying? Well, obviously it's because we internet gamers are fundamentally annoying people - borderline personality disorder psychopaths to the last. So, why did PGI exacerbated this by encouraging us to express ourselves, inevitably leading to bitter insults and mass confusion?

1) Who asked for it?
2) What benefits does it provide?
3) Why PGI mends things that work properly?
Longer searching time + 1 or more minutes waiting makes thing much worse.
I understand what longer searching time for, but this annoying useless button?
Please, remove it!

Hush, now! You are *obviously* one of those non-skill00rz, who want to turn MWONL into another CoD.
<Sarcasm off>
As if this game had anything to do with tactics on your average pug-match.. lol. You just need a few matches on Terra Therma with its customary "conga-line-of-death-towards-the-center" to realize that.
The fact that the radio-chat is only displayed for a few seconds and is not scrollable or anything doesn't help either. It's a pretty useless tool, ignored by most players. I'd bet that a lot of guys don't even know where to look for it, simply because it'll fade out and is not very noticeable when it *is* actually displayed.
Why not make the radio-buffer something like this? (old screenshot of an old game):
You could place that thing anywhere you wanted it on your screen, you could expand/reduce its size (lines displayed) *and* you could scroll it.

Yes. I hoped this would have been fixed ages ago. It never was. It needs a topic in itself to bring it to the attention of PGI. I can't read chat and instructions that last 2 seconds and can't be read when they appear (due to colour problems that were never corrected).

Gonna be on UI2.0 me thinks.
I have no idea why the ready-button is in pub matches. Might as well exploit the heck out of it and see how much rage and TK's occur. Ie not readying up and mixing up the lances for 4-mans.

At least make an option to "Auto Ready" on drop

The problem with the current ready button is that it takes only one player who is inattentive, rude or trolling to keep the other 23 people waiting. There are good odds that this will happen consistently in PUGs. One fix would be to force drop after a majority (say 2/3) of members on each team click ready--the majority would have to contain the commander (if any) as an accommodation to large pre-mades.
The problem with the current command function is less acute, but it's more of a hindrance in PUGs than a help. There are two distinct issues.
First, as has been noted by other posters in different ways, there is no basis for evaluating the volunteer commander in a PUG scenario. Having some barrier to entry is probably good. Even then, I worry that it just becomes an excuse for drama. Even a competent leader is going to lose and when that happens the minority of rude players is going to heap abuse on them.
Second, the ability to reorganize lances doesn't mesh with PUG play. It would be far more helpful, in my opinion, to have some intelligent automatic sorting--grouping by weight class as best as possible, for example, with premade lances excluded. At least indicate pre-made groups in the UI so a commander can make more informed sorting decisions.
