First, the reason I'm asking (because it's kinda funny)
My wife came in and started trash-talking while I was killing enemy mechs "yeah make him your b----!" and the like. This entertained my clan that she didn't realize could hear her so they talked her into trying to play. I'm putting together a computer for her tonight and its going to be her first drops. I'm pretty excited, since she'll have to stop asking me "did you have fun playing robots with your friends? nerd!". Turns out there are several player-wives in our clan that are starting out, so it might be fun B)

The game's changed so much since I started (you founders peeps from CB.. its changed even more for you!). If you were a noob starting on day 1 - what would you want to know? I'm talking basic stuff. Until recently one of my first tips would have been "don't buy advanced zoom!". I can't for the life of me figure out what I'd want to teach her right off the bat, other than use the movement tutorial, then play in training grounds before going in-game. I might create a second account so I can drop with her her first few drops and show her around, though that feels a little sketchy. I'm having a tough time stepping back to my first drops, so any input is welcomed.

Any noob tips that I can impart on her? Please try to be constructive, as this thread might also serve as a reference to any new players heading out to try the game for the first time.

Ignore dead people when they start trash talking your actions.

Make sure she knows how to set the weapons groups and she is comfortable using them and keeping cool in training grounds before she makes her first drop. I die a little inside every time I see a new guy shut down after every shot.

The biggest thing I wanted to know was who was actually good at this game and worth listening to.
This community does not respect its best players, and instead inserts their 50-year-old shitass opinions based on some cursory reading of a military strategy book and it tends to be the worst advice ever.

Press 'R.'
When in doubt, press 'R' again.
If you have ammo left by the end, you have too much.
Atlas goes in front.

Lol I read "make sure she knows who peef is" B) (kidding! just messin with you)

She watched me play and I think she wants to drive lights, so thats a big win for me.

Negative: I'm going to have to buy her MC so she can paint her mechs all girly. We also have to pick a name for her. In her words "It has to be epic, because I'm f---ing awesome... but not too epic in case I suck!"

If there's no better option - follow the fracking atlas. (except if it's a trial B))

I would want to hear the stories about what MWO was like when it was good and then wish I had been around during the good days.

Another prospective member of the Cult of Speed? I would have to say Jump-turn. Tap that spacebar and learn to do crazy black magic instant direction changes. That, and get a Heavy as a fallback option... Learning the ropes in a bantam-weight is a prospect only for those with a masochistic bend.

As a light, standing next to an ATLAS will magically protect you from most enemy fire. Standing next to two ATLAS will almost guarantee it.

As a light, you can quickly engage the enemy at the start... don't do that. Wait for your company to engage in combat, then enter the fray. Doing this will allow you to maximize your damage output, as enemies being distracted by your larger team mates will be easier to shoot at, and be less likely to shoot at you.

For some reason everyone shoots the spider, I don't get it but people will cross maps to hunt me when I drive them.

Also, pick that first mech carefully, you will be driving it for a long time.

lol yeah - my first was a 5v because I figured "12jj sounds fun. How bad could 2 ct energy be?" - I was new, so didn't realize this meant either 1 large class laser, or 2 med class lasers. 12jj is fun though  I may start her in a 5v just so she learns how to survive B) (kidding - starting a wife in a terribly hard to use mech sounds like a butt chewing waiting to happen!)

thanks for the tips guys - as long as she picks lights I can train her well

this is super handy when you're on voice comms with some heavies. I like to be the bait and draw 1-2 enemy mechs (lights or mediums) back into a killbox. so rewarding.

This is actually my designated role as a spider mid game. the number of people who will turn their backs to heavy and assult mechs to get that one, gold painted, spider... it defies reason.

I'm currently working the 5V, my last to get the basics.. I keep a standard engine and the zombie factor is funny. Was playing with a DD Jager, BLAM right torso gone, BLAM Left torso gone... I need to find the button that enables the invulnerable mode.

On a more serious note I started on phracts and I recommend that as a good platform to learn on. (Except the 4 don't start in that one).

Everything else aside, this should be what every player sees when they start their first live drop. They should have to hit an 'acknowledge' button to confirm they've read it.

Well, if she's going to be a proper noob...
  • Teach her to stand directly behind teammates who are peaking over a ridge
  • Teach her to walk halfway into the Volcano, then start reversing and bumping into everyone behind her.
  • Teach her to walk across the bridge in River City in an Atlas, dead center in the road, going 30 kph.
  • Teach her to run head first into the enemy team as soon as the game starts, alpha striking, overheating and dying, and then give a sarcastic "thx for the help guys......." in public chat before disconnecting.

  • Unlock the arms.
  • Lower your mouse sensitivity.
  • Rebind the keys you use for easy access.
  • Look around and select targets (the minimap is not a radar screen).
  • Stay with the team.
