The first few maps, save for Caustic are far too small for 12 v 12 gameplay. River City is tiny and has map bias for one of the starting positions, Frozen City simply has horrid map layout design, and Forest Colony is simply too narrow.
River City (RCN is another topic) besides being too small, barely qualifies as a city at all. With that size, its more or less an over glorified port. This map simply needs to be made bigger. Sorry if that sounds nebulous, but its painfully obvious. Ideas on that are beyond be other than add more ports to either side! Expand the map boundaries and add dense urban blocks. Remove the Rubble on the top side base and expand that space port (I bet many people haven't even noticed the massive runway back there). Expand behind the dam! Do something!
Frozen City suffers so badly from poor map design. Every engagement usually consists of either team camping on one side of the dropship, then full rush after the first few mechs go down. Sadly, a good majority of the map is never used because of its layout (and assault mode... but another topic).
To fix this, expand the map, giving way to another urban sector and expanding the ice tunnels.
To do this, remove the Glacier wall around B1, C1, D1 and E1. Add in a dense city area in this new region of the map giving an alternative to rushing the dropship. Secondly, add in more tunnels in D2 and C2, creating an Ice Labyrinth situation, ideal for ambushing lights and brawlers. Third, move the starting base in E3 out into E5. Make use of that damn frozen bay!

As for Forest Colony, it just needs to be MUCH wider. As of right D1, D2, and E3. Expand the water far into those sections to create a large bay, with rock structues jutting out similar to out in E4 and E5 ( you can see them quite easily in game, despite being out of bounds).
Second would be to create a second beach and hill side similar to what we have on C3 and C4 area, but in E1 and E2.

When I get time, I'll update the two maps posted with grids and more detail illustrations (which are apparently only visible on the Smurfy Site, so I'll include a link directly).
