this "contest" = creative use of resources

pay out a couple of hundred dollars, and you get tons of near free concept art, nicely done PGI

This isn't actually a PGI-run comp, MoonUnit is runnig it himself, and putting up the majority (right now, *all*) the prizes himself.
For that he deserves big hugs.

I can't wait to see the entries roll in, I'd love to join in myself but tbh I don't have much time to join in, so I'll take my place as one of the spectators required to make any great show..

I would just like to know what the actual settlement was between Harmony Gold and FASA. Does HG get the ultimate say in if the "Marauder" and other Macross based mechs (based on their name) see the light of day? If so, I would be fine with a good enough redesign (one that can avoid future suits) under a different name if it is enough to avoid Harmony Gold's intervention and get it into the game.

That being said, good luck to all the artists out there. You have more talent than I could hope for.

TBH i'd love to see PGi have a go at vetting the winning artworks so they know it's what the community wants and hopefully HG won't be ******** on it saying it has 3 arms two each side on on a head with legs that's our glaug you can't have it. seriously can you copyright a mech phisical configuration? transformers and battletech would be suing eachother for humanoid robot copyright theft if it was as generalised as that.

as far as i know the names aren't a problem {they're all different names anyway in robotech/macross} it's just the design rights.
time to re-invent the wheel. gentlemen start your sharpeners!

i will say the person who said to use the frankinstime mech (CATAPHRACT) as the base is on the right direction. the legs and right arm are from the marauder. using this will give a idea of what a Marauder wood look like in MWO for there art . this will also help out some of the hit box some are worried about i think with the arm socket covering more of the torso .

and yes i want the marauder lol when i played TT it was always the Griffin and Marauder i used and my friends are the ones who gave me my nick name that i still use to this day

This doesn't count as I 'shopped it when the Cataphract was first announced and posted it all over the forums back then:

But yes, even in lore the Cataphract is essentially what happens when Cappellans can't make out the IKEA instructions that came with the General Motors - Marauder factory they took over and you end up with some missing parts, some extra parts, and some other pieces that aren't even supposed to go on there jammed in. So we already have half a Marauder in-game! Just need to figure out that torso and clone/revers that right arm (and add another 5 tons).

trust davion not to put the knife in... all the way. but seriously the phract chassis is not ideal as it hasn't the gate, poise and stance of a marauder, it's too well balanced. i could go further but we'll wait and see what the competition brings.

The above drawn Marauders don't feature quite the forward/laid back posture of the Marauder. A Marauder usually has its arms drawn forward, while his bird like legs go all the way in the other direction. This makes up a good proportion of the mechs aggressive look. In the 3D model above the arms don't really stretch out forward at all and neither do the legs extend to the rear too much. To me the Marauder looks very much like a lobster/crab, that married a space ship.

This version of the Marauder doesen't feature the right legs/feet. It also seems to be a humanoid shoulder, which doesen't quite look right. Arms from Cataphract look ok, but could be more impressing.

Not to be the party crusher here, but try to keep in mind people, the only way we will MAYBE get a Marauder, is if it looks so much NOT like the original, that it cannot be considered the same Mech on the basis of appearance alone. I think the entries so far look GREAT, and potentially fit the bill. The ballistic being off to one side, but still way high is exactly the kind of changes that we're going to have to tolerate to see a MAD on the field. Not to mention, if I saw that last one for sale in the bay, I'd buy it so fast, it would make your head spin!

Keep the great work coming guys! Now, I need to go make some popcorn....

Autobot, Grenadapult, both of you have a point.
Ofc they are just photoshopped and don't look like the original, or as imtimidating.
And on the other side, we aim for getting the Marauder ingame, so we need to get some kind of new touch in the design to not get into a law suit with Harmony Gold.

That said, both images above are old and not for this contest. They still suit for a taste of old nostalgia and inspiration for the participants.
If we compare these to the Reseen, you get a totally different style again.
I think some kind of high shoulder plates (like Awesome and Griffin) would be great, but the Reseen torso looks too strange.

Just trying to give some constructive criticism, I am really looking forward to see more great art and I do hope this will help PGI figure out how badly the community wants a Marauder :)

I setup a petition thread a while ago, feel free to leave a "like" on the initial post here

There is a lot of heresay in the internetz over the HG-FASA incident, this is what i found:

FASA originally licensed their varied anime designs from Twentieth Century Imports, who did have the import derivatives rights. When Harmony Gold sued them over the Macross designs, FASA won, but they removed the designs because even if they could win the case, it cost them too much money (and the original reason for using them, the lack of original designs and time pressure to get models cast, was gone as Battletech had a much larger design library), and Revell (who had licensed some of the other products for their toy lines) were getting greedy eyes, and they had deeper pockets than FASA.

And since in 2002 Big West sued Tatsunoko over the derivative rights issue in Japan and won, if HG try it on again they'll get a proper kicking in court, because their original derivative works license was invalid (HG`s), and FASA's wasn't.

Will anyone be unhappy if I find the time to enter this competition? :)
Designing marauders is kind of my specialty.

I take that as a challenge to improve my own stuff.

That being said I might be pushing for a more Reseen design. I kinda reeaaally like that version over the original. Just something about it makes me happy.

What about a up sized Raven with the arms from the Cataphract? Think that is a nice and easy way to do the design and make it look a bit different than the original. Only thing is having the single AC in center would be difficult, but I remember other mechs that had a center weapon and the head was off set. What matters is the basic look and feel of the original mech would make it the original, not a redesign. You want a redesign then you have to deviate somewhere from how the original looked and felt. I am not a good artist at all, but if some one wants to try the Raven idea go for it see what comes up.

I like 2nd one shown here, the top one... not so much:

http://www.sarna.net...ntest-underway/

OP here, the prize money is from my own bank account, and I’m not affiliated with PGI or IGP in any way. ;)

Seems like Sarna is implying this is an official contest, but it’s not. Hope you enter! ;)
Edit:
I’m at work so my responses are delayed, haha. It looks like BigJim got to you first. Thanks BigJim for the correction, and thank you guys for the hugs! ;)

Your contest rules say the deadline say November 10, 2012, and sarna.net posted it as well.

(Hint: it's 2013)

My question is simple: why would HG care if what they are trying to protect is not the name of the mech? I bet there is more to the story but, if a completely redesigned mech is thrown out there and called the "Marauder" why would HG vote no? It is not the same anymore as the mech that used to be called the Marauder sooooo there should be no infringement right?

It's all about the artist. Here is FD's (Alex Iglesias, MWO's lead artist) take on the exact same design:

Posted Image

All the same features, but much cleaner lines, and better proportions (although I'm still not a huge fan of the stilt legs). Which tells me the design itself isn't flawed so much as the first interpretation of that design was just poor.

Image. Image is the only thing that HG is interested in. Not the name, not the stats, just the image that they licensed from SDF Macross for use in Robotech. Don't use an image that looks like the Macross design and there is no issue. However, the community seems to be largely unable to accept anything that doesn't look like the Macross design... so I think we as a community need to just let go of that image in order to have any visual representation of that Mech (or any others that came from Super Dimensional Fortress Macross)
