While wandering around the maps, I was struck by the attention to detail that the world builders gave to the features. It then occurred to me that maybe a brief overview of the various maps and some observation of the "science" behind what we experience might help us all appreciate the hard work put into the areas we blow each other up in. ;)

About the maps.. I never understand if those planets really exist in the Inner Sphere.. I did not found them on Sarna.net , i know PGI and they are more than likely to have even invented planets.. Please correct me, i want to think that they don't really want to kill this universe.

But then, why not making maps set in famous planets like Twycross, Tukayyid (both in the future), Halloran IV.. ? Many MW:LL maps are far more immersive then those in MWO and they have a little description about the main events on that planet.

Awesome, thanks for the write ups. Please do more.

It's weird the planet has no life but it has oxygen. Maybe there is some other process contiuously replacing the O2 that viciously reacts with other compounds.

Because the maps are going to be recycled as multiple planets. Really making specific lore isn't all that bright. Technically though Tourmaline does exist.

Yeah, this is pretty sad.. Though i don't understand the difference. These maps are specific, just their planets names are invented.

If they had tried with community-created maps.. Some of the mappers in MW:LL made really good maps, as good or even better than those made by PGI.

But i will admit that the moon base map intrigues me :) (hey please do not call it "moon base" :P ).

Besides, Konivig, i know you see how this F2P model is forcing them to abandon lore, canon and all that we love to get more casual players who love easy shooters. Damn, there are more tactic options in MW2 and MW3 than MWO :P

It could be much worse. It could be MW4 or MechAssault 2. :) MPLs that fire like machine guns and in a projectile form with ball shapes. ...Think about that for a second. Medium pulse lasers... firing as balls of energy, like a machine gun. o.O; PGI isn't my favorite company, but I can think of how much worse it could have been!

That said, it'd be nice if the planet concepts were less precise. Maybe a special map for each capital planet or special planet of note, and a crapload of generic maps randomly generated. To quote something I've said before about planetary assault (which is supposed to be 4 matches on 4 maps with and against the same people to determine who gets a planet), is 3 random maps related to the climate (i.e., Jungles) and then bam! Forest Colony to duke it out in the end. 3 randomly generated snow-heavy maps, and then BAM! Alpine.

The engine has the ability.

Great idea Konoving. Since PGI is still in the concept stage of Planetary Warfare, you should fire it off to them and see what they think about it. If you put it in the next AtD, I will definitely support you on it!

Haven't played the Xbox versions of Mechassault (or rather I have demo'd them at a friends house...)
But!
I own Mechassault for the DS... and I have two Three words for you.

Homing Lava Cannon.

Also has a giant spider-mech that shoots at you with it's tail, rams you, and burrows through the ground. :o
Yeah.
This game could be a lot worse :)

Edit: Clarification

PS: My copy of Mechassault was done by Micro$oft - there are no other company names on the box.
(Loading it up, I get the engine company's, the sound company, and Micro$oft.)
Micro$oft owns Mechwarrior right now.
This game could be a LOT worse.

Edited Edit: The list of gripes I have with the DS Mechassasult is longer than the total list of Features IN MWO... Let me leave it at that for this topic before I get moderated.

I believe they had the idea mentioned in the past and commented on there being a map quality issue -- however at the time it was a question to just replace real map making with that. I might throw it at them but I don't think it will get too far. Instead they might do a number of rapidly developed generic maps. I know it'd be nice if they stopped planning specific choke points, it gets annoying and unrealistic.

It wouldn't even be necessary to create random maps all the time. They could do 1-2 really large realistic* maps for a given climate and just randomly select only a smaller part of that map for a battle, the rest would be off limits ("out of bounds"). That was the way it used to be in the MPBT online games.

*Realistic meaning not the sort of "extreme" landscape we have in almost all maps atm. How often do you encouter something like forest colony on earth? And who in the right mind would place his base there or choose this terrain for a an average battle? :D

What's so extreme about Forest Colony?

Please try, it would be still better than many other questions which get a generic "no ETA" answer.

Take the hills for example that are all over the map. They rise to about 15-20 metres, but are very steep on all sides. I always have the feeling of being on some sort of Counterstrike map, where some boxes were just replaced by what has to pass for 'hills' here.
Maybe somewhere on earth hills like that exist but its not the average landscape you would expect. I'm all for alien worlds but I would like to see some eartlike landscape with real scaled hills for a change.
But I guess I kind of derailed the thread with this.. sorry :D

My apologies for not getting to this...I've had a stomach bug all week, and haven't gotten around to the next installment. I'm just starting to feel human again, so hopefully this weekend I'll post up the next planet. Thanks for your patience and positive feedback.
