I got an idea for a "more realistic" Locust model, so I took the M230 chain gun I built for my SA-04 Orca model. Heavily influenced by Gooseman's Locust from BattleTech Movie, I cobbled together the side torso. I plan on making a separate lower part to join the legs for torso twisting.

Is it just a wheel?

Nope. Wheel with a gun.

That's just how it rolls...

See? See what I did there? XD

(also, it's just the Side Torso... so it's only a part of the mech. OP mentions this.)

That is deserving of bonus points. Well done.

Now that I think about it, it does look kind of like the Cobra Buzz Boar. http://www.yojoe.com...es/87/buzzboar/

Maybe this next image will help some.

I'm going to place the cockpit in another area and turn what was originally windows into armor plates.

Now that there is a sexy beast. Can't wait to see the full project. Also, anyone else think that if you slapped some ski's on that bad boy it would be one kickass snowmobile?

Trying to figure out the cockpit layout is giving me a headache. Plus the scale in established artwork is inconstant. Here's some rough ideas and a general direction. I'll try again tomorrow.

Some window and medium laser placeholders for now.

Personally, I like the front seat back seat approach. Reminds me of the cockpit of the AH64.

I like the lower seat varriant myself...why does it have two seats anyway?

A lot of early artwork depics two people operating a locust. Thumbing through some of the older source material references are made to most 'mechs being designed to carry a single passanger (in a jump seat) in addition to the pilot. This seating arrangement is also referenced in the first book of the Kerensky's Blood Trilogy, when Kai Allard Liao takes an unwilling compatriot for a ride in a borrowed hatchet man.

ED: My vote is for the side-by-side approach as this is more true to the origional.

That was where I got that particular seating arrangement.

Hayden explained part of it. The idea of a pilot and a navigator/sensor operator, or some other type of dedicated specialist in the jump seat fits with the recon aspect of the Locust design.

Wrong pronoun.

Thank you!

I'm going with a single seat version with a smaller cockpit area. In imagining the layout of the internal structure of the 'mech, I was thinking of where critical systems like the fusion reactor would be placed. If I were to do a double cockpit and think of a place for the engine, gyro, etc then the scale would be thrown off.

OMG the shading.

So Awesome.

Also, what program? Any formal training or all self taught? Who do I have to kill to get a fraction of your skill?

I use TrueSpace. v7.6 is free to use though no longer updated. Microsoft bought the program from Caligari then stopped development a few years ago. If you want to get into 3D with an open source program, I'd suggest something like Sketchup or Blender 3D.

I was mentored in doing 3D modeling back in 1998. No professional schooling or anything like that. From there it's mostly self taught.

Personally I'd go with a free program and a lot of tutorials before entering a Faustian deal. *grins*

-edit-

Quick update. Trying out a few ideas. More later.

OK, probably the last one for today. Rebuilt the medium laser and the chin turret. I liked the idea of adding sensor suite to the chin turret so I modified it a bit to fit the design.

I would put the Medium Laser more backwards to get a Locust that is not to similiar with the unseen version.
And maybe the Turret more edged... it looks somehow strange ;)
