hopefully I will be available for Back to Basics. Seems like the only way to really make that work is to have a more traditional lance as you have to make every shot count due to heat/ammo limitations. For example a lance of nothing but lrms would seem to do poorly as the heat and low ammo count would work against them.

Yep. My personal Lance Reccomendation is 1 of each class.

A light to scout. A medium to help defend the light. A heavy to provide fire support and an assault to be the hammer.

I think a Locust, Shadow Hawk, Catapult and Awesome would be a hell of a lance.

I can't argue with that make up too much, but might swap the Battlemaster in for the Awesome. I don't really remember how well either of those 'mechs performs with the limitations placed on them by the stock single heat sink load-out, but it seems like having the CPLT and the AWS with minimum ranges on their best weapons might be an issue.

I might also try to figure out if there's a 'mech that has more longevity to its ammo stores than the Catapult (IDK, maybe the Thunderbolt or Orion; both only have 1 LRM-15 instead of 2, but carry the same amount of LRM ammo as the CPLT-C1).

Of course, I don't have any of the two assaults or three heavies stock and am most likely to be willing to buy the Onion, since I'll need two more ON1's at some point to be able to elite my Protector.

Also, I'd love to see at least one Phoenix Lance, just for old time's sake, so I'll say my ideal lance for this would be Locust, Shadow Hawk, Thunderbolt, Battlemaster.

I think we are about to see why the Clans thought they would have such an easy time rolling over the Houses of the Inner Sphere. When they started preparing for the invasion, the 'mechs we're going to field this week were the best available. By the time they showed up, however...

So if everyone had to go with stock 'Mechs, what do you recon you'd need for 50-50 odds (assuming roughly equal pilot skill)? 2 IS lances vs 1 Clan star? 3 maybe?

Against Clans you generally need double tonnage on the tabletop to make for the +50% bonus basically all Clan Mechs have in all parts of their weapon systems.

Clan weapons weigh half as much and do half again as much damage. They usually have another 50% range increase and, despite having 50% more heat, have double heat sinks, meaning their weapons only increase the scale by half as much as IS weapons.

In MWO? The clans aren't quite as OP, but the stock configurations of most 'Mechs can't make the most out of the IS Advantage of direct pinpoint damage. A single Mad Cat could probably take out a full lance of stock IS mediums on its own if nobody brought a Hunchback just because stock clan Mechs were designed well from the getgo while stock IS 'Mechs tend to be made fairly poorly.

I mean, a 3025 Shadowhawk is considered one of the better mediums, and it has three different ammunition dependent weapon systems, and all of the ammo is stored in the torsos. Its most powerful weapon only does 5 damage as well. Double tonnage is probably still a pretty good bet.

After seeing is vs clan on Sunday I'd say that your looking at a ratio of about 5 is to 3 clan not because of better gear but because of simple amount of fire power that clan mechs can lob down range the nova prime has 8 med Las and the ryokan can lob 70 + lrm in. A volley but in close they got wiped pretty easily. So I'd say you can effectively look at fielding a star.. sorry lance of heavies to deal with a star of med.

Yeah, that Nova was fun to try out on the public test server.12 meds run pretty hot though; first time I've ever had an orange CT that still has armor on it ;)

Yeah I noticed that made the mistake of alphaing on a almost cored atlas... it did not end well for either of us still I have to say that over all it should be amusing to see the forums after it goes live and watch every one complain about how op they are

So, took a little time to log in this morning and play for half an hour or so before work. I'm surprised by how many clan 'Mechs there are out there. Only had time for a handful of drops, but I'd say I was seeing roughly 50-50 clan vs IS. Is this a representative sample?

Seems about right, yeah. That clan pack sold like gangbusters. I wish I'd been able to get in on it.

Moving would be so much easier if you could get Elementals to do the heavy lifting for you ;)
