So why all the bitching and complaining leading up to it?

It really amounted to a whole heap of nothing. . .

and yet a bunch of forum-ites were convinced PGI would be out of business right now if they had implemented it.

I guess nerd rage is its own reward.

I use it before cresting ridges, you would be foolish not to....

In actual combat no one uses it.

"It is ok to have spent time and effort implementing this feature, because even though it is detrimental to the game, no one uses it."

Yes.

That makes sense.

They said it was a built in cryengine feature so there really wasn't much work on their end.

1. The final version was heavily influenced by the bitching and whingeing. Had they simply dropped 3rd person in without arms being locked and the indicator above our heads it would have been nothing but 3rd people would use.

2. It WASTED time/money/effort that could have gone into something useful. Which was part of the point to begin with. The bitching went like this, "Either you will make a 3rd person system that pushes us all to use it because it is too good, or you will make a balanced or crappy 3rd person that no one will use so why bother to begin with?" Hey... look at that... the bitching was right.

That's the real issue I have with it. It was something that PGI spent some of their limited resources developing, convinced it would greatly improve the experience for new players, when in reality it adds almost no real benefit.

25% of all low elo brackets use it a lot. Edit: Or used it when I was there with my alt account with a buddy or mine that just started then.

^^ this. If you drop a newb, you'll see it used quite a bit AND THAT IS WHAT IT THERE FOR. it's there to help the newbs.

I would suspect that it's just because they don't know how to turn it off.

Also, I would suspect that many players find the 3rd person so clunky, that since they don't know how to switch it off, think that's just how the game is always meant to be played, and then quit as a result.

You don't "see" anyone using it, but it is in use. You don't see my drone while I'm behind cover waiting for you to look the other way. When you do, I'll switch to 1st and either jump or crest, and be back in cover before you see where it came from. It's in use, but in a strategic way that you do not see the OP of it. Can't complain it's OP if you don't know it's happening.

It makes even more sense when ~30% of the people who still read/post on the forums don't play becaues of 3PV.

Right?

You do realize your camera drone has a red flashy light than anyone who's paying any attention sees right? Actually had one guy trying to use it to hill peak last week and I one-shotted him when he got impatient and crested even though I was looking his way.

Sorry, no need for sarcasm so I took it out. Yes, I am well aware of that, been around the block a time or two through several games these past 15 years of playing mech type games. I have to wonder if you actually read my post. It's not very long, and sentence 2 and 3 completely negate your point.

I see a multiple of 3pv every game at all Elo brackets, in fact I played a game last night at a higher Elo bracket, over half of the enemy team was poptarts, and about half of those were running 3pv. In addition to allowing you to freely see over cover it also auto-centers on enemies. They didn't win, so obviously didn't give them a huge advantage, but it does seem like a pretty useful tool for the meta PGI is pushing.

This.

Also, it wasn't meant to be a mainstream feature, it was meant to help new users learn to control mechs etc.

Have you ever been present when they change the brand of applesauce in the retirement home?
Its the same sauce just a different name on the bottle.

You would think "obamacare" just opened its first old person death camp next door and their kids are coming the next weekend for the first time in years to visit them and they have to take a field trip next door be4 that weekend. :o

Were you not present for the timeline of development in terms of 3PV?
Because it seemed like it took months to go from their first announcement, to the test server, to the live game.

Seems as though that must not have simply been a switch that they flipped.
