Look, if your team doesn't have enough tactical knowledge to keep your base of operations protected, then you deserve to lose.
Don't be decieved by the name, assualt isn't just brain dead pew pew die.

I want to be the last spider on the team, jump up someplace where I can't be found, power down and let you people try to find me. And after 10 minutes of wasting every times time,

Wrong. And this is coming from a guy that's been begging for a Deathmatch gametype for months on end. The base is the only thing preventing one last enemy light 'mech from running out the clock. When was the last time you wanted to wait 10 minutes for the match to be over?
Additionally, they're working on a deathmatch mode called Skirmish right now. So chill. It's coming.

capping in assault is fine, its those that fail to protect their base that complain
Ive lost plenty to base caps in assault, its part of the game
either you learn to protect your base or you lose
learn some better tactics and stop your whining...
oh, nad protecting your base is not being timid, its sound strategy in a game where a base can be capped for a win...

The team with most mechs alive after 15 minutes wins. Problem solved.
Also on terra therma its a pain. Both teams go around until each hits the other's base and just stands there capping GG. And no, pugs will NOT go left to encounter the incoming enemy team EVER.

Why not just limit people to .5km from a given base. You will be able to shoot the any mech with a medium laser by standing in the middle.

Potentially new game mode: Deathmatch?
I...
I think I like where this is going. Of course, that remains to be seen after some stringent testing and whatnot..but still!

Wrong. This is already basically the case. The team with the most kills at the end of a round wins.
If the last spider does hide in some forgotten corner of one of the big maps, you will have to spend 10 minutes looking for him if you don't have a base to cap.

And no: That kind of behaviour has got nothing to do with "good tactics" - nor with wanting to help the team.
It's just another example of the "single player mindset" that seems to be the norm with this crowd. Just like people running through their team trying to "get that kill" or standing behind friendlies and shooting them in the back while trying to hit the enemy or standing behind them in a fight blocking their route back into cover.
Sorry.. got a bit carried away there.
Simple solution:
Disable cap until the last 2 or 3 minutes of the match. Or: Only enable cap once one team is down to 3 Mechs or less. Or how about this: Remove any sort of rewards for a cap win. You win the round (whoopee!) but you don't get *any* sort of XP/C-Bills for it.

Capping has been in since the beginning despite these threads appearing very week. ever thought that maybe the devs think it is working as intended?
