Yes, well, maybe PGI should have thought about the fact that servers cost money when they decided on a free-to-play model. Charging people for basic game options on launch is pretty scummy. Not going to give my final judgement on this until I see how things end up, but really, if they want to go with the "servers cost money argument," maybe they ought to be charging all those terrible freeloaders a subscription fee.

Or, we could assume that this game works like every single other free-to-play game and note that the costs of an imaginary currency that costs them no money to make should rake in enough money to keep the servers running, which in turn nets them more cash selling more imaginary spacebucks because there are more people playing the game.

It's PRIVATE MATCHES. The premium options are NOT REQUIRED at all, as they can be enforced by whoever is running the private match in the first place.

Well, except for map selection, but BFD.

WHEN???? How many months after UI2 release (which is how many months away) plus the typical 3x factor to the original estimate.

Many units are MORE THAN WILLING to shell out the money for their own private server. That's what happens for MANY games like Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory (a completely aging F2P game).

Doing any other method seems silly by comparison.

In theory, it should be a win-win for PGI, people paying them (on a recurring basis) for server usage and people still getting what they want (their own server). I think the last of the MW4 Mercs guys did that (although, virtually anyone could host it themselves for free).

Sometime the easiest solution is the simplest one. It's odd that PGI wants to continue reinventing the wheel.

Trust me, I have plenty of experience with other older shooters, including W:ET, and have in fact paid to host servers in multiple other shooters.

The difference is that if I wanted to change my skin or gun or loadout in those games, I didn't have to pay iD or Valve or Epic to for the privilege of doing so. That's not the case in this game.

And yes, as you point out, there was also the option of hosting your own private matches for free in all of those games, either through a listen server or a dedicated running in your closet. Once again, I'd love to host my own server, but it was PGI's choice to make it so that anyone playing had to go through their servers, not mine.

I guess that sounds OK, except, this should've been done with UI 1.5 long ago.

I agree, this is something that should have been done sooner. Because, this game SORELY needs new MODES like.....last year. Gotta keep new content coming, new mechs doesn't quite classify as new content when all ppl can do is build them on a whim and play. Gotta be able to keep flavor there, AKA new modes such as mission modes and so on. Depends on how soon this could happen, also depends on how the community likes UI 2.0 after that <cough>joketesting<cough> that happened.

My 2 cents....

If you have to pay to get the 'premium booster' then prepare for the wrath of the forums............

That's why the obvious system of making money is better than what PGI is concocted up.

Even having a "virtual rented server" system is worthwhile enough... this is just too convoluted.

I mean, people actually PAY for their own TS3 servers (although technically, you could set your own one up if you wished). It's a drop in the bucket if people think it is worth the investment.

How can you even begin to think it does NOT involving paying?

Can't wait for the community drama when this is instated and players start getting kicked out of private matches because they don't invest in the premium booster because no one wants to wait around for a match to start.

Leagues and tournaments stipulating that if you don't have premium don't even bother signing up.

That's exactly it i dont think that.. ...anything that involves the word 'premium' with PGI...

That said, having to pay to set up private matches is quite possibly the worst idea ever, there will be fire and rage and an angry mob...

per the other command chair post, you will also have to pay for slot 3-8 in your drop ship ("players start with 2 slots...")

Of course it involves paying, PGI got to do something to keep the servers online until the clan grab deal is ready.

They did not say you have to pay for them (with money, I assume you mean). It is possible that they can be unlocked through faction mechanisms, , or achievements.

If the money invested for "premium private matches" is about the same as for a rented server there shouldn't be much to rage about, right?

You don't have to pay to set up private matches. Only certain options won't be available, and the only one that can't be bypassed through policy is map selection. Everything else can be done for free.

except none of this will be done before that clan grab is ready. They will wait 3 more months, post another CW "update" and then troll for dummies with a clan pack. Sign up now and be ready for CW!

This is directly from the CC post:

If the match creator has a premium booster (premium time or some other new booster), they will have access to the premium ready screen options.

It's pretty clear that only the person creating the room needs premium, not everyone in there.

Cheers.

You missed the part about limited (ie zero) basic servers and bypassing a long queue with your premium booster.
