Plenty of damage but only a few kills. Are you managing to put it in the same spot or does it get spread out?
If you haven't got one already, the target info gathering module lets you see the weak spots on mechs quickly.
You may also wanna spend some time in the mech lab so you can figure out if your target is running an xl or std engine. It helps with deciding between the side and center torso.
I'm pretty good at hitting components consistently. In most of these matches I'm running a dual gauss jager. With that mech I can consistently hit a targeted spot (eg the left or right leg) on larger mechs or some general area on light mechs while they are on the move. A couple of days ago, for example, I legged at Locust from 850 m while he was running down a hill at full speed.
Also I have a pretty good idea of which mechs are running what, and use target info when I can.
In the games where I won last couple of days, I actually had much lower damage but more kills.
Also, notice that in every one of the six games I posted, I had or tied for the most kills on the team.
The problem here is when the team gets bad enough you are always fighting multiple people at the same time. There was so much incoming fire in some of these games that I did not even have time to get locks before needing to get back to cover (and nobody was providing locks either). So often in these situations I just send a shot to front cockpit area or rear CT to any mech I can shoot safely and hope for the best. Unfortunately, with a bad team, everybody on the other side is really healthy.
With the dual gauss jager, the Adv Zoom is absolutely necessary. So I have one remaining slot for either the module or an improved arty strike. I almost always choose the arty strike because of the ability to hold back an assault temporarily.
With other mechs (eg my brawler Atlai), I some times chose to take the module.
But, I have to emphasize, it doesn't help much to take a module to identify enemy weak spots, when your team is so bad that most enemies aren't weak anywhere. Eventually, there's just no beating back the tide.
