Is anyone able to tell if Pulse Lasers are going to be like Mechwarrior 3's (which, IMHO, were the best rendition possible for the idea) or if they will be the travesties that Mechwarrior 4 made them into? I am really hoping they are like MW3's where the beam is continuous as long as you hold down the fire button (up to a length of time, like a reverse-cooldown before requiring a cooldown period if held down too long) and generates more heat the longer it goes.

We have no information on this as of now. I am curious as to how lasers will be implemented, and hope to high heaven they are not like MW4. :)

We know regular lasers work like.. well lasers... they deal damage over time depending on how long they sit on a spot. Pulse lasers probably act similar but have a faster recharge and deal their damage faster.

No idea. This is something that I would like to know as well. Haven't seen any information in the dev forum though.

From Sarna.net: Pulse lasers differ from traditional laser weaponry, in that instead of firing one powerful beam, they maintain several laser beams fired off in quick succession. While offering an overall increased rate of fire, the heat output also increases accordingly. Pulse lasers increase damage because they allow vaporized armor to dissipate from the location of damage. This allows subsequent pulses to reach the target area without being diffused by the vapor.

Definition of pulse from dictionary.com:
3.the rhythmic recurrence of strokes, vibrations, or undulations.

It would make more logical sense to have the pulse lasers look like they did in MW:2. I don't recall how they were in MW4 but since MW3 is the only game that I've seen where pulse lasers were a constantly maintained beam of light, I'm assuming that they took it back to the traditional pulse laser.

Pulse lasers of all sizes have been around in the Inner Sphere since 3037. They have been confirmed in game from the start.

Remember that IS pulse lasers are relatively appalling when compared to their Clan counterparts.

id rather have pulse lasers be very short firing in duration, that way they have a better direct damage potential then regular lasers long firing mode that spash thier damage across multiple locations. i know its now how they are "supposed" to work, but a short higher damage "pulse" would IMO make them more combat effective then regular ones which would make them more worth using.

Quoted from devblog5 q&a:

Now, how will you depict Standard Lasers/Pulse Lasers in MWO? –GB_Krubarax

[DAVID] A standard laser fires a continuous beam that applies damage over time while it remains on. A pulse laser fires a continuous beam that blinks on and off. (Not the blaster bolt style of light ‘bullets’ that fly at the target.) Damage is applied in short bursts each time the laser blinks on.

Pulse lazers to me, are something that shoots off pulses, or small beams of light, each one hits slightly after the next, resulting in higher dps, but the possibility to hit diffferent parts with different points. There is a raised heat, per shot, but the weights stay the same, and we're all golden.

Laser machine guns. Basically. ^^ I hope they have em, I always liked them for the fact that if you missed with the first pull of the trigger you didn't have to wait 2 seconds for the damned things to recycle/recharge

lol that looks terrible. lasers=/=tracer bullets

those actors must feel silly holding their ray guns in the air only for the effects to be added in post production.

also, looks like the trope of the charging hero getting killed goes back pretty far.

I picture the way it's discribed as the pulse lasers being full on solid from mech to mech, and flashing completely off and then back on and so on. I'd imagine they are different color than other lasers...

I foresee them flickering on and off like a strobe light.

Expect the weight to be higher than a standard laser: the devs have said they are sticking to the weight/space numbers of tabletop for weapons.
