But since they do plan to put this in the game, I think this is pretty much fulfilled in the future.

Anything adding flexibility to your Mech behavior during a battle is welcome.
However, be ready to see all the usual "NO it's not COD, MW:O has to be exactly as limited as World of Tank!" raging all over this place (cf: the Side-Step poll).
Good luck then!

Usually, yes. But I could definitely see it being used while ridge-humping. My BLR-1G has PPCs atop its shoulders, I would gladly stand, fire, and duck instead of waddling up only to have to throw it in reverse.

Gotta be a Cataphract pilot. I know those thoughts. Not even sure how a CTF could crouch, lol.

Kneeling in certain chassis:
Some of the canon Mech chassis did indeed have the ability to kneel, the jaeger Mech was one such element in it's role as AAA cover, also some of the missile platforms used this position to stay low but still be able to launch. The Uziel was a common Mech chassis that could also use this low stance, and if armed with gauss, light gauss or rotary AC's needed this posture to keep it's large center torso low.
[using this posture for extreme long range weapons presented a very small silhouette to the Enemy, and if they didn't see you fire were hard pressed to spot you.]
I know you didn't want to hear it but the Raven was also a Mech that excelled at the crouch stance and worked great in it's role as scout, spotter.
Only some chassis were capable of adapting this posture, due to leg design and build. The chicken walker leg design adapted better to this stance than straight legs, but as seen on quite a few Mech leg designs they did have armoured protection for the knee joint and for kneeling. In some cases, if the Mech had hands it could probably kneel, as few to none could bend at the waist to pick up anything from the ground.
[I would assume this posture disengaged some functions of the Mech's or we would be seeing every Mech kneeling when not moving, or during rearming/repair. Or BattleTech just hand waved this feature away as uncommon use.]
From some of the older games as well as MW:LL this did indeed provide a more stable platform and for missiles, it reduced the missile targeting lock-on time. But, as stated, it did have a few draw backs.
- first the Mech must be stopped to engage the crouch posture,
- It took about 1.5 - 2 sec.'s to adapt that stance, depending on leg design,
- the crouched Mech was restricted somewhat in it's torso twisting (only sometimes)
- but the crouched Mech gained additional elevation angle
- the crouched Mech did provide a reduced target profile for any Enemy (harder/longer to lock on)
- the crouched Mech was susceptible to area fired munitions, ie; the Arrow IV or thumper/sniper
- if the crouched Mech was assaulted by fast Mech's it needed to resume the "stand" in order to conduct any move.
- the crouch provided some lower body cover when there were not many ground features to hide behind
- low terrain features that would not be good for cover now actually did, rocks, rolling ground features
- jump jets could not be engaged during any crouch manoeuver
- shallow water could now be used for concealment
So, yes I would like to see this posture enter the game.
But currently PGI is having some difficulty with just getting the Mech's feet to stay or follow the actual "visible" terrain. This crouch position would require additional modeling and armature work coded into the game, as well as touching on quite a few other weapons and ballistic areas. If they could do it, great. But not something I want them to stop there current work on CW or map and game design for.
Here's a small image of one look at a Mech in the crouch, reducing it's height profile by 1/2:

Any mech with two actuators (upper and lower) should be able to raise its arms forward to shoulder level and fire over terrain obstacles like usual hillhumping champions Jagermech or Stalker, or lower them to their current position and use them as shield arms.

Edit: I was reading and realized prone mechs would only be able to shoot from AN arm, and that is because they had to use the other for support. That in itself would balance the hard to target factor of shooting at prone mechs from afar. This feature could also help in shielding from LRMs if they don't have scouts behind you. Although it might be harder to work out how everything works then if they added crouching. There might even be a little bit of an effort needed from the player to even stand back up. That way you could give a chance of falling back down and causing damage to yourself.
