They will probably take a break over the holidays, and be back at it in the New Year.

I wonder what everyone else's control scheme is? Because I figured mine is probably the most unorthodox.
I set my mouse to pitch AND yaw, with auto-centering on. I have main throttle on W+S, A+D for strafing left and right, rolling on Q+E and vertical throttle on space+alt. Finally I put reversed pitched on up+down just so I don't have to toss my mouse everywhere when trying to dogfight. Sure this mapping is inconvenient during turning dance, but is massively advantageous for precise shooting.

Keyboard A/D: Roll
Keyboard W/S: Main Engines Accelerate/Reverse
Keyboard Q/E: Manoeuvring Thrusters Left/Right
Keyboard R/F: Manoeuvring Thrusters Up/Down
Keyboard Z: Toggle Flight Assist
Keyboard X: Cycle Subsystems
Keyboard J: Hyperjump
Keyboard K: Spool FSD for Superkruise
Keyboard T: Target Object Ahead
Keyboard G: Cycle Available Targets
Keyboard H: Target Highest Threat
Mouse Widget: On
Auto-centering: Off
UI Orbit Lines: Off
I find that this works pretty well for me. Feel free to give it a try, anyone, if they have trouble with the default settings.
On a sidenote: lol @ the recent GalNet news

I picked up a mission about going to another system to find pirates, jumped there, only to find out that since I have no ******* info on that system so I'm now stuck there exploring LOL

My control scheme is almost the predefined Saitek X 52 pro scheme what comes with the game.
But i'm really considering to use the switchable Modus settings of Saiteks profiler software to use different modes for fighting, docking and frame shift drive.
Hint for all starters:
Start with the delivery mission, they give a lot of money and clear orders.
Other missions in which you have to get some items back to a station should be done later when you know were to buy.
And any mission with retrieving black boxes or killing a bad guy centers around checking "unidentified signal sources".
Deactivate in the right control panel the "Report crimes against me" if you don't want interference with the local law authority while going bounty hunting.
Sometimes the fuss will kill your target, or you may hit them by accident and get killed by the cops.

I've developed the habit of checking most, if not all, "Unidentified Signal Source" when supercruising into a system. Most of time it would be a lone cargo ship, or a wedding/funeral fleet, or a bunch of biowaste floating in space. But every once in a while I run into a couple of "wanted" NPCs and make a bit of money. In the past 2 hours I had three bounty encounters in Kremainn system, which immediately boosted around 40k credits into my wallet. The default Sidewinder is a surprisingly competent ship - almost took down a Lakon transporter the other day, if only I didn't time a boost wrong and bump myself into it....
What bugs me is that I keep getting interdicted out of nowhere...and when they successfully interdict me usually I end up floating alone in space.

She's quite flimsy, so the trick is not to get hit. Fortunately, this ship allows you to achieve just that. You will most likely need an upgraded reactor to cope with the demands of the third hardpoint, however, especially if you also wish to upgrade the shields.
The Eagle shares this role with the Viper, though, which is less agile and has a smaller jump range, but packs more of a punch and can achieve an overall superior top speed.
The Viper is officially classified as a Heavy Fighter, whereas the Eagle is a Long Range Fighter. Most pilots "graduate" from the Eagle to the Viper as the latter costs about 3-5 times as much, however there is no need to do so and you can instead elect to just keep stuffing your credits into more and more expensive Eagle upgrades. Part of the beauty in Elite is that the ships are essentially really just hulls - what matters is what you put into them (although the different hulls do favor different qualities/roles).
tl;dr: if you want to be quick and nimble, go for an Eagle; if you value firepower more than agility, look at the Viper - both ships can kill each other nicely, it all comes down to pilot preferences and aptitude.
kind of like with the 'mechs in MWO!
PS: Hahah, Schroedinger's Jump

I keep pouring money into my Eagle. I love it. And it is a money sink. First powerplant, then thrusters, then harness, oh, now I need bigger guns... repeat etc. etc. It's a great little ship not to mention I love the look of it.
And I have been playing nothing but Elite since it came out on Tuesday. The Eagle is nice... I killed my first human in it today.

Been playing non-stop since Saturday. My MWO premium time is bleeding day by day and I don't even care. Seen a bunch of silly stuff in E:D, funeral fleets, wedding fleets, single pirate stalking a full convoy, pirates hunting pirates, randomly scattered around platinum and a clean stat pirate Pablo **** with a 'conda who annilated my Sidewinder in the blink of an eye. Amazing.

Yesterday, I did things like shoot up a pirate who gave a 26k bounty, which I never actually managed to turn in because I was interdicted by some other pirate who managed to blow up my remaining hull too swiftly.
Then I went out later and tried my hand at getting more bounties and collided with a NPC ship and blew up... I found 5 crates of liqour made from human eyeballs and sold it for 8000+ a pop. I smuggled slaves and was fined repeatedly for something I never understood.
I play using a CH joystick and throttle combo. Highly recommended.

Weekend.
Long.
I sunk 170+ into my Freagle. It's quite the machine, however, it has power problems dealing with the power demands of three weapons. I made the mistake of upgrading to a larger ship (Adder). Pirate meat, and forget mining, unless you have escorts. The Cobra might be nice, but it's also 370 K.
I downgraded to a paid Sidewinder, and have been improving it, using the cash from my sold Adder. It's nearly as good as the Eagle in fights, and it's CHEAP to run. And, I have the extra cash.
It's really a small-ship verse. I've been moving away from the PC-populated areas as fast as I can, both to explore, and to collect on the goodies floating around.

If you want to be an allrounder, however, the cobra is way better, and lather in the game, i think the asp is the best suited multirole ship.
