Ahh, Elite. I'm a backer myself. Lots of childhood memories attached to that franchise; the original Elite (well, the PC version of it anyways) must have been one of the very computer games I have ever played. :)

Looking forward to a career as a bounty hunter!

Have you checked the dev diary articles? I really like how much thought went into background stuff like the appearance of the space stations or the science behind space travel (reminds me of the "interstellar physics" chapter in the thick Elite II manual), etc ... plus, I really appreciate that they've largely kept the original geometric shapes of the now 30 year old ship designs and merely spiced them up to look good on modern hardware.

I loved that game so much.

Remember the imperial trader courier? It had a hardwired engine. One day, after neglecting repair costs, my engines broke, and I found that you could install a huge engine that only left you around 7 tonnes of cargo space, but allowed you to make enormous jumps. I thought I was a computer god that had discovered the secrets of the universe.

Then I lost my game manual and had to trial and error the security checks.

BRB. Having to revisit all the 80's nostalgia I can. First step, transformers movie.

Edit: Those graphics!

I'm glad I've not once (okay, lies! I DID do the Goon giveaway palladium event) given in to easy cash. I earn it the hard way. I steal it!

Nah, i'll stay with the Asp, it is already costly enough to maintain for my tastes, a python or anaconda would be really too much.
And i haven't got the nerve to grind all the way up to those ships :P

BTW, nice job on earning that ship!

So I've been very interested in Elite: Dangerous for awhile now, but the hurdle that has been preventing me from purchasing it is time. I tried Eve and liked it, but there's no chance I will ever have enough time to dedicate to getting anywhere in it. Elite is more appealing with the free-flight, but with no trial, and no way to know how much time is required to have fun in Elite, I'm reluctant to put up the $60 for it. Any advice?

Well, since there is no end game, you do what you want. I'm not putting a ton of time into the game right now, but the time I've had has been good. It's something you can just put 30 minutes in and do some farming at the Nav Beacon or a good Resource Extraction site, or run a few trade missions to get some quick cash. And of course if you want to farm rep or get cash for a ship, you can do that as well.

The gameplay is good, and the scale of the galaxy is immense. A little overpowering in fact. I really like the hybrid solo and open play though, since you are still affecting the galaxy even in solo mode.

It's a good diversion right now, and hopefully the expansion packs will add a lot more content as well.

Thanks for the quick reply :D. With that info it seems like the cost is worth it and I'll definitely get my moneys worth. I'll have to pick it up for sure in the near future. Cheers!

No. This is the beginning. No more will I be the flying pinata when trading in Open Play. Large cargo, decent jump range and A LOT of firepower. The game has just begun.

Define "fun".

I mean, there's a whole theme park of fun to be had. To me, right now it is collecting all sorts of ships and watching my bank account tick. If you feel like playing Dark Souls in space, build an Eagle and do those Anaconda assassination missions. If you feel like playing Euro Truck Simulator in space, buy a Lakon then go ahead and discover trade routes yourself. If you feel stressed, build a Viper, find a conflict zone, pick a side and make spaceships explode. If you wanna watch space porn, build a Hauler with a massive FSD and a fuel scoop, and travel around - remember to play some Solar Fields in the background.

I've seen bounty hunters with ridiculous glass-cannon loadouts chasing players across the galaxy. I've heard of player-fueled factions fighting for power for the star system (Adeo, to be precise). I've been horribly robbed by what I call "rabid dog" players in my Type-9, then I stuffed my T9 with all the missiles, and watched them explode with great satisfactions.

It really depends.

"Fun" with respect to time. I'm no stranger to time consuming video games, and very much enjoy them, but I no longer have the luxury of getting to spend a lot of time playing video games. So in comparison with Eve, which I actively played the trial and although found it appealing, was overwhelmed by the commitment needed to actively keep up with the game, I was wondering if Elite was perhaps more solo-player, or short play-periods friendly. Examples being: Is there a strong need to join a guild in order to progress/play efficiently? If I can only put 10 hours a week into it, will it take me a reasonable amount of time to save up for a better ship, or will I be stuck with a basic tier for a month or two?

I must say though, pretty much everything you said sounds entertaining. A more specific response is that I would choose the Dark Souls in space. Another very helpful reply, I appreciate the feedback! I'm very excited to get into Elite. Soon.. very soon.

Well, if you can spare around an hour in E:D per day (and not afraid to ask all sorts of silly questions on the official forum), I think you can get to an "average" level of play with a lightly outfitted Cobra in like a week. Then the game becomes still in a way and relaxing in another. But that's another discussion entirely.

I just found something that, in a certain way, makes me feel that I'm getting a lot more of my money's worth in ED as opposed to SC

Well, mind you, 2 days after i started playing, with almost no clue of what i was doing, i was already sitting in a midly fitted viper (the go-to fighter of the game), and i played like 3 or 4 hours in total. The game is really "time firendly", and it is completely playable even with the starter ship. By the way, how much fun the game is, depends mostly on what your goals are. Do you want to be a dedicated bounty hunter? 5/6 hours and you can have a fully fitted viper to go kick some asses. Do you want to be an explorer? Less than a week and you can have a cobra well fitted for the purpose, and then start your journey in the galaxy. Do you want to be a trader? No worries, you'll likely start as a trader, so no waiting to do that :D.

See, the nice thing of elite, is that cheaper ships like the cobra and the viper, are really good in doing some things (viper for fighting and cobra for exploring/fighting/initial trading, it is a really good multipurpose ship). Yep, if you want to explore, your final goal may be to get an Asp, and that one requires a bigger investment to be bought and fitted to the point (still, in a pair of weeks you should be already able to buy it, if you start with the trader route), but you wont be held back just because you didn't spend 40+ hours ib the game.

There is absolutely no need to join a guild in Elite:Dangerous.

If you play the SOLO mode, you will only encounter AI Ships.
Anytime you can shift to a Group or Open Play.
In a Group you will only encounter players in your group. It's perfect for COOP style gameplay like Bounty Hunting at Nav Beacons and Resource Extraction sites or fighting in Warzones.
Only in Open Play you will encounter other players that might attack you, and even most players who acting as pirates are fair enough to spare players in smaller ships.

It's also not necessary to grind to the next ship - all the money that you earn can be first spend to upgrading the ship.
All ships are fitted with Equipment of E Quality. Buying Equipment with D Quality isn't expensive and give in most cases the best mass / power ration.
D Quality Equipment for the Sidewinder (the starting ship) costs between 1 300 and 17 000 credits, so after two or three missions you will be able to buy better Equipment. Fitting the whole ship with D Quality Equipment costs around 80 000 credits.

Earning money and improving the ship is a constant flow - and the money isn't wasted, because your ships equipment value will be subtracted from a new ships cost.
The 80 000 credits you will get back as refund if you buy an other ship - the Eagle for example costs 54 000 credits.
But you don't even have to change to a bigger ship. Some selected C, B or A Quality Equipments can give even a small ship a nasty sting.

I really, really don't feel like repeating the whole "SC ain't out yet plus this is nothing but a commercial lolol nerd" thing again. Just leave.

Also, apparently Lave is filled to the brim with maniacs.

You know what I liked best about that video? All the noises from from the combat! The pew pew pew from the blasters on the Aurora! The whoosh of the missiles flying through the air! The BOOOMS of the missiles slamming into the asteroid! The dakkadakkadakka of the gatling guns as they fire on their target!

When I think of space warfare, THAT is exactly what I imagine! Right out of Top Gun, including slamming on the brakes to get them *closer*! You can be my wingman anytime, Maverick!

What does the Hornet say?

but unfortunately, this is the issue, there is no sound transferring medium in space so you won't hear all the peew peew and booms of something hitting not you. all you would porbably hear is your guns and stuff that impacts on your ship. The rest is just earcandy for gamers.

and this actually makes space scary because everyone is like a ninja when your sensors would fail.
