I haven't bought Horizons yet because well... so many cowards in Elite that refuse to play Open mode (which is now dead).
...
All but one person (more on that later

) I've come across in the galaxy has been an upstanding player, and carried on great conversations, both in-game and on the forums. For those I've met while playing, I'm 99% sure they would have shot back had I attacked. Perhaps you should try shooting down an Anaconda. Just find people who don't seem to be in the trade business. Seems likely they'd be the first to try and run (I suppose not o0Cipher0o though lol).
I can't say I've heard of many people playing solo. Never tried it myself, I'm always in open. Seems to be the way of a lot of the player base, serious pilots at least. I feel the issue is the server size/size of the map. Constricting servers caps to 32 players is understandable, but still restrictive. Popular systems still span vast distances, with many stations. A mere 32 (providing the server is full) people can easily bypass each other over and over again without being picked up. Especially mixed in with the NPC targets. I would assume this translates proportionately to a large player based applied to even just inhabited space, let alone the Milky Way.
I too am very excited for CQC though, for essentially the same reasons. A queue for dog-fighting in space against other people sounds fantastic, and I'm very excited. I'm also looking forward to Horizons, snagging it up tomorrow.

CQC stress test is up for everyone, not just users with access to the beta, and it's incredibly fun. Takes a bit of getting used to how nimble the F63 Condor is but that comes with a few games under your belt.
How do I access this?

Bought Hotas-X for CQC. It is hidden in closet, waiting till my wild bunch falls asleep...
Still on the edge should I buy Horizons. Money is not the issue but the principle around their pricing policy...
Although, in my opinion, they deserve money for their work.
Congrats on the HOTAS. I hope to own one someday.

I want this game so bad but I think ill just wait until Star Citizen comes out
My suggestion is Elite. You can have it now (unless you buy horizons, which if you don't already have a copy of ED, you get the base game with it, the catch is you don't get it until Horizons comes out), it's beautiful, mysterious, fun, and eventually be something exceptionally amazing. It is still early though, and a lot of the enjoyment out of the game comes from making your own fun from it. The story is there, but it's not meant to be a focal point, the missions are generic though change to fit specifics, there's Power Play (their CW) which is fun and full of incentives, but a bit of a grind, and there's quite a bit more than that to the game as well. All of which is developing, and getting better, much like a certain other game

. The exploration is quite amazing, though nothing to find out in the void so far. It also has it's mystery, things left to us to figure out, which also shape and effect the main story line. One of the coolest things about ED is that player news articles about in-game events, and player-created minor factions that have picked home systems are actually put into the game. The players may not directly determine things, but they are certainly influential. I could go on and on, unfortunately there isn't a demo to try it out, but if you do decide to pick it up, I don't think you'll be disappointed.
So that one guy..
Shortly after I started playing ED, I was attempting to take off in my Sidewinder from a large station, but every time I was released, someone in an Orca was ready waiting to attack me. Sounds strange right? That's because he would wait for me to respawn, line me up right in front of him, and throttle up. As soon as I'd show up he charge.. BOOM.. and I'd be sent flying to my death. Killed me twice, but then he wasn't there anymore. He probably died as well.. The whole thing was pretty funny, I might have a video of it somewhere..
