Yes - but, who is supposed to be the pilot of Grid Iron? What is their affiliation, and outlook?

I was hoping that with Jester's story of Leigh Voss, having some backstory for those Hero 'Mechs that don't seem to have direct ties to established BT characters would become more of a regular occurrence...

Hero mech backstory was one of my favorite parts of them. I'm sad they chose to be lazy regarding these also...

So.... if you included the bobblehead in the normal price for the early adopters, I would buy.

Paying an additional 500mc, while it may seem like a deal, is not. It is just silly.

Give it away for the price of the robot and you increase the value of the robot. That means more impulse buys.

Just sayin.

I'm disappointed PGI. You could have done so much more. Instead you give us a HBK-4N via real currency instead of implementing the widely used chassis in game.

What could have been?

2xAC5
3xML
XL250
Endo Steel
DHS

Basically this but with an AC5 in each side torso. You could have even given it 3 JJ's instead of AMS. Because you know what that would have given us?

A back door HBK-IIC. That's the possibility you missed.

I am disappointed.

ever think they didnt do that so they can release a proper HBK-IIC later on ? ya know after the clans rock up perhaps ?
also Butane9000 there is no limit on how many mechs they can Add, so there is no such thing as a missed opportunity

this is a good mech and i know there are going to be a lot of happy hunchi pilots out here (especially those that missed out on the 4GF)

They don't have to be geniuses as long as the people with cash aren't geniuses either.

so true. I wonder what percentage of those "with cash" really arent and are just part of the "oh Ill put it on my card, or cards" crowd.

You know, I pretty much speculated way back before the Oxide came out that if a Hunchback hero were to pop out, it'd be a combination of a 4G, 4H, or 4P and a 4SP.

2 ballistics, 3 energy, 1 missile? Sounds like a 4SP and 4G hybrid to me.

Until you nerf the LRM's, only people with a deathwish are going to get into Hunchbacks.

The HBK-4N would basically obsolesce the HBK-4H and the HBK-4J, so I am glad they didn't do what you said they did.

The 4N has 1 Ballistic HP and 2 EN in the RT (like the 4H) AND also 2 Missile HP in the RT (like the 4J), plus the usual 2 Energy in the arms and 1 in the head. Releasing an actual HBK-4N would make the 4H and the 4J unneeded, as you can do both of those loadouts with the 4N.

The Grid Iron does let us make some stuff that you can't do with the other Hunchbacks, but your options all have limits.

If you want to have a *unique* mix of ranged capabilities fired from high hardpoints, then you either need Gauss + SRMs + ML (but you could accomplish a fine defense with Gauss + 5ML in the 4H), or you need AC/20 + LRMs, which means you won't be carrying many LRMs.

You could use 2 AC/5 (or UAC/5 + AC/5) as a primary, but the HBK-4G can do that with 3ML as backup. You could do all-short range with AC/20 + SRM6 + MLs, but you can also do AC/20 + 5ML with a HBK-4H. You could do AC/5 + MLs + some LRMs, but Centurions can do that too. You could do LRM-10 and AC/10, but Cents, again.

The Grid Iron, to me, will take some getting used-to if I want to run it uniquely.

  • No Jump Jets
  • Same weaknesses as a typical Hunchback [Huge gun hunch]
  • Random hybrid of various Hunchbacks, nothing to set it out as something special
  • Inferior to the Shadow Hawk, like most mediums.
A really good hero Hunchback could have brought Hunchbacks back in general. As it stands this is flat out inferior to the Shadow Hawk still. A jumping model could have even given the chassis a niche again.

Also it looks like it should be called the Cheerio's Bee and not The Gridiron, though I don't mean that as an insult.

The sad part is there is a great piece of BattleTech lore to backstory this thing, namely about the IS planet that was extremely respected for having the best football teams in the galaxy, but only had a limited defense force, so the Clans challenged them to a football game instead (seriously).

They accepted, only to see Elementals for the first time... and yeah. They lost, bad.

A pretty hilarious side story and having this 'mech be one of the defenders of this planet would at least be amusing.

Only relatively unique setup is the SRM6+ML+AC20, which is still something you can get in a SHD if you want it.

I've got that setup with a STD200, and I don't expect it to be great, but it will be interesting for a bit. I might go back to something I could do on a different HBK, and just have a shiny paint job and more CBills.

@Victor
I agree, the GI doesn't really stand out with any of its builds. SRMs are too broke, and it's just a little bit too small to do much with multiple ACs.
