1550 ping? I'm sorry, but if that's the only way you can rack up those figures, you didn't deserve them.

Also, of course I wasn't there, but from looking at the numbers it seems like a well-fought battle on both sides, hardly a ‘lol carry harder’ situation.

I'm not impressed.

It's 1560 ping, and it only jumped to that near the end when I was the last person alive, for the most part it was 240-ish ping.

Even then I didn't know mechwarrior: online that it was an advantage to can't shoot becuase you are teleporting constantly and unnable to move because every time you take 5 steps you teleport back to the place you were before, and then when you DO move you somehow fall off the HPG upper level and break your leg, and you lost a 1 to 1 fight to an atlas who is cored in the CT orange/ red which you mainly lost that fight because the atlas was moving so fast that I can't lead my target...

oh and fun fact, the atlas was legged as well and was standing half the time.

If you think having lag/ packet lost / high ping is an ADVANTAGE you must be playing the wrong game. Because all they are seeing is a locust running into a wall and what I am seeing is a bunch of mechs moon walking half the time and my damage indicator failing to turn red when I fire at them.

Then I suddenly discover I am half way across the map and critically damaged.

Edit: Out of that 602 damage done that battle. only 0.01 damage was done when the ping spiked.

I actually kept a 170-180 engine in my Commandos pre-HSR because of that.

I don't know how you guys do it. I normally play mediums so I thought lights may be fun. Bought a locus. Every time I try to scout I get legged from 600m and if I pop over a ridge I get insta cored. The last match I played I got insta gibbed by a UAC5 and med laser. How do you get one shot by 10 damage?

Xl 190 is pretty much mandatory until speed tweak then you can go as low as 170. Build according to the quirks they are amazing. Stick with the assaults or heavies. Use them as meat shields and make a PITA out of yourself. I don't like scouting in locusts, spiders are better for that. Read the stuff in this thread it is very helpful.

Yeah I'm running the 190 XL. I'm just still too aggressive I think. It seems that if I wait till the brawl gets good and going they're all dead by the time I get in range to engage. If I engage too early I'm dead before the brawl gets started.

You have to learn to think Subtle.

Locusts - at any speed - are squishy.
You can fully expect to get any part (including the CT) blown off in one shot - and your legs are half the bulk of your mech.
(Rather like the Raven)

You cannot run off on your own (despite your speed) - as the Commando can outrun you - and every light except the Spider outguns you (and they have almost twice the armor you do)

Do not duel
Do not make a target of yourself (which gets tricky sometimes)
You are the assassin in the night
You are the extra gun attached to the assault Lance
You are the eye to the rear (watching for flanking maneuvers)
You are Batman in Superman's fight.

It takes awhile to get a feel for where you need to be and when to be aggressive and when to back off. A good rule of thumb is always attack distracted enemies from angles their friends can't shoot you or if you find a wandering assault you can own him pretty easily if he doesn't back into a corner. Just stay right behind him and core him out. And I feel your pain, what you are describing is identical to my experience thus far in cicadas. When the brawl gets going It is over before I get there or I run ahead and get knocked out after doing 37 damage :) a lot of it is just learning a new mech I think. Cheers!

Mostly true, though with the right setup you can do ok. I find that radar dep/ECM make it possible to execute long solo flanks without getting prematurely killed to *insert appropriate expletive here* and beyond. Still, something you want to use discretion on. It's the better part of valor.

Do not duel

Screw that rule; that's no fun at all. I'd rather lose a well-fought duel than win a battle where I let my team do the heavy lifting for me. For that matter, I'd rather lose a well-fought duel than win almost any other kind of engagement.

These are all excellent rules though. That arrogant alien reprobate, thinking he's so safe in his assault mech. Well I've got your Kryptonite, fool! Small pulse lasers!

So, on a more exciting note, I'm considering picking up the Locust 1E and delaying my Stormcrow mastery program due to the FRR sale coming up. Also closely eyeing the Firestarters in this sale while I think about it.

Also the people above say do not run off by yourself and do not duel.

This COMPLETELY depends on the enemy.

If you have your wits above you and you know the enemy mech. (which is easy for me because I own nearly every mech and researched the hell out of the ones I don't) then you CAN duel pretty much nearly any assault and all lights.

Depending on your build ofc. the 1V with 4 machine guns and medium or medium pulse laser can be very fun and easy to duel an assault but sucks at fighting lights.

A locust with 2 Streak SRM 2's and 2 Medium lasers are awesome at fighting other lights but suck at fighting assaults.

A Locust with 4 srm 2's and the optional medium laser is awesome at killing assaults and heavies while not so much at lights.

Using a locust with 2 LRM 5's and a medium laser isn't advised to 1 vs 1 an enemy directly but it is quite fun LRM'ing and out running a mech at the same time as they try to get withen your min range.

Using a locust with a mixture of small ,small pulse, or mediums in the count of 5-6 can often fight assaults and lights with ease as well as poke holes into mechs that are to distracted or clunky to fight you.

Pirates bane with a build simular to the stock resembles both energy and machine gun boat builds in terms of targets. It can.

Fighting LRM boats 1 vs 1, (Regular) PPC boats, and Mechs with weapons that can't hit lights easily ie gauss rifle, AC 20, etc. are also a good option to brawl with.

Knowing how easy it is to head shot a mech, Knowing there easiest to hit hit-box, and knowing if the mech commonly has XL engines or don't, is also key. (Some mechs see you as no thread and just stand there to shoot at you, this makes it very easy to land head shots.

Going off by yourself also depends on your speed and build, It involves knowing the map well and why you are going off by yourself. It depends if you are scouting, flanking, running away, or just search and destroy. Depends on the destination as well.

If you know say HPG you can run under the ramps to the main upper area, meaning if you DO spot an enemy, you can use your size and speed advantage to get out of sight and to another location faster. Not all lights can get under there either so you are safe from the ravens, adders, firestarters, etc.

If you are on a map like frozen city, forest colony, viridian bog, etc there are very nice places for you to hide and power down from a chase, depending how far away they are and if you got ecm or not and other variables, it is very easy to go to one of the areas and power down. NOTE: do not stay powered down till the end of the game.

You are not trying to be a ****, you are simply using shut down for it's original purpose to get to set up an ambush, pop up unexpectedly, or to evade death for the short time being. (note... if the enemy is suspicious for a BAP, ie an LRM / SSRM 2 boat, or is a locust with 6 small lasers or less... this will make some of those hide areas or blind spots hard to use, if it's the near top of that area in the cave of forest colony, you are safe, if it's the large bushy vine area on some walls of Viridian bog which fully hides you, then do not attempt to power down.)

What do you do when he walks past? you can A) power up and hit him in the back, or B)power back up and run the other way that he is going.

Another note, in some areas of maps with water, there are deep areas where you can fully go under water, this reduces your incoming damage as well as hide your mech, It's great for an ambush or to evade death!

If you are a locust 1V or pirates bane with MG's loaded up and it's just a few cored damaged crippled mechs around, go hunt them down.

TL;Dr
you can 1 v 1 mechs of the same weight class or much larger then you
you can use tactics to help improve your chances of survival and make you a much deadlier force
learn your maps and learn your enemies!

Want to counter argue me? then don't you go TL;Dr on me and go READ!
(PS I know I suck at english, it's my 3rd language. Don't judge me!)

I sold my Locusts from the Phoenix pack, but was forced to keep the 1V. I run it with 1ERLL + 2xMG, XL 190. It's....kinda fun sometimes but far from my favorite. I'm a much bigger fan of the Commando and own three of them. Was looking at the Locust quirks and put this Locust 1E together in smurfy.

I may have to give that Locust a spin. 4.6million isn't much to risk for a good time. *shrugs*
