Well, i did it.

I got a locust.

Congrats. This is going to get painful until you get basics done.

Which locust did you get?

Last Locust Match for finishing Mastery on all 5.

Good job. This is why on Conquest, people should be capping.

Damn straight!
Why keep Conquest in the rotation if you're just going to play Skirmish or Assault anyway!

*coughs*

Anyway.
It's not all bad without effeciencies unlocked.

You can make an acceptable LRM5 boat (just one, +ML), or SR4 boat (2x2 +ML) with either missile Locust.
A pretty reasonable knife fighter using 5-6 SPL with either energy variant.
And the 1Vs ML or MPL + 4MGs and 1.5-2T of ammo is always sound.

The first real game changer in a Locust is switching from a STD 150 / 170, up to an XL170/190.
Then it's unlocking Speed Tweak.

Seismic and radar derp are also your friends. Also remember that on HPG you caN fit under the ramps which really comes in handy.

dual 4s doEsnt really work well. Better off with 2 2s or a 2 and a 4.
the "lrmcust" is fun as a distraction but not really effective at all. Dual lrm5 with 1ml or 2 sl.

Yeonne Greene has commited terrifying acts in his Locusts. I'm slowly getting the hang of them.

I got the E.
Have enough for an xl engine and am torn between getting the XL, or saving for a Nova.

The Nova, isnt going anywhere and wont be on sale, so...

Im leaning engine.

get the 190 on the 1E. skip the 170 for it unless you plan to pick up some other locusts later on as others are more useful with the 170 over the 190 and you really want the 190 until you have speed tweak.

190xl isn't that expensive.

load up with 6 SL/SPL

OR

4ML + 2SL (my loadout)

run around, have fun.

Learn what it is like to HAVE to play smart.

at some point pick up the ML/SL/SPL module, max it to level 5.

Yes, anything that uses heat needs DHS. The 1V is one of ~3 mech builds in the game that don't mind single heat sinks

I pretty much consider DHS necessary on most mech builds. For the Locusts, they are absolutely mandatory on the 1E and 3M.

DHS:

Thought so. Wondered if the 'scooting' would allow enough time to cool between the shooting.

It actually does.

Especially if you are running SPLs. The reason I like having DHS is because it allows me to function in stressful situations with little worry. Sometimes you will run into someone that will try to chase you, and you will have to trade shots. Having DHS reduces your chances of over heating greatly.

If I can pull 510 damage with a 20ton mech (which I have, with the 3m), then I'd have to say it's a pretty damn good mech if you know how to scoot and shoot. It's like being a nimble rogue, carrying a stiletto dagger in a fight where everyone's got ******* swords, claymores, and no armor on their backs.

3M with 5 MLs and DHS, 190 XL, pre speed tweak was when I pulled that 510 damage game.

This is not just the Green Hornet theme song, but the Locust Theme song now.

At this time, the only 'mech I have better Win/Loss And Kill/Deaths with than my 1V is my Raven 3L.

Speaking of, I Killed a Summoner yesterday, one on one with the 1V. It was good. Mind your leg armor folks, I know it's tempting to cut, but I'll bite your ankles.

Pretty surprising what playing smart can do for you. Full throttle is hardly ever good in combat, and the locusts ability to decelerate and turn so fast make it hard to hit. Abuse it.

HSR is the locusts worst enemy though....I've been legged or killed so many times during 1 on 1s because I'll be clear out of sight and then take the damage from someone shooting somewhere I visual wasn't at or was at like a second or so before.

Is it a good idea to 'learn' the Locust mainly on conquest?

I did skirmish on Alpine the other day...lived and won, but wow, its a thrill knowing every corner you even peek around just might be your last.

It's a good idea to learn the Locust on 'any'.
The locust excels in Conquest imo, but you need to be able to account for when you can't just cap and win the game single handedly. :P

The Adrenaline rush you get from that is almost unrivaled by any other mech. Until we get an insanely dense urban map and we get Urbies.

i've had so many round in the locust where when it was over, my heart was pounding so bad I had to stop playing for a bit. I don't get rounds like that in other mechs very often. especially on the rounds where you end up the last one VS like 2 or 3 and you win.

Oh yeah, the Locust is like that. I felt like I was a fighter pilot, zipping around the battlefield with a pair of machineguns. Strafing the heavies and dogfighting with the lights. Definitely a thrillride.
