I picked up the S recently.
So far my favourite is 2xAC10 4xML XL280. It's nippy, has reasonable ammo and face on packs a punch.
I find the Jager is a little short on space for a cool 4xAC2 build is you're a trigger happy as I.
TBH 2xAC5 2xAC2 seems to pack the biggest wallop but space is tight for ammo so it tends to overflow into critical areas.
Having tried this build out a few times, I can stand by this opinion. The AC/2 may have heat problems, but for user friendliness, reliability and overall usefulness it tends to beat the UAC/5 by a mile. And this is coming from someone who likes the UAC/5 so much that he's kitted his CN9-YLW with two of them. For the extra 6 tons you'll have to count just toward the weapons, you'll gain about a 30% DPS advantage with the UAC when properly handled, but that's under favorable conditions, and these being auto-fire weapons the alpha advantage will taper off very rapidly. And the kicker is you'll also lose so much in survivability and speed and extra tonnage for the ubiquitous ML:s to back you up that it's just not worth it. I run my "PERFORATOR" JM6-S with 4x AC/2 and 4x ML, and it's a much more comfortable and reliable fit than any UAC/5 build. IMO, the UAC/5:s should only be used on the Firebrand, where the extra punch matters and you have all those energy hardpoints to back you up. When you have ballistic hardpoints in abundance though, it's better to go with a multitude of "cheaper" weapons capable of laying down a uniform field of fire.
One of the guidelines that I try to live by in this game is to keep the types of weapons and ammo, as well as the actual amount of ammo, down to the absolute feasible minimum. Strive at all points to keep ammo types pure, and if possible add backup energy weapons rather than additional ammo. Having lots of alpha is all well and good, but when you have a speed- or support-oriented mech, that is to say one that is dependent on either mobility and flexibility or being able to keep up a constant stream of DPS, the immediate applicability and reliability of your weapons just matters so much more. Which is why a broad weapon mix is only really feasible on the heaviest of Assault mechs.
