Your arms move a lot faster than your torso can twist. This means arm-mounted weapons are more responsive than torso-mounted ones.

Yeah i get the arm thing, but that doesn't explain why missles are good there, I do see that its fairly uncommon set up tho.

Your mech will have 2 targeting systems, one that reads weapons from the torso and the other from the arms.

You can use your mouse to control your "arm" weapons which are very responsive, while the torso takes a moment to catch up and meet your crosshair. For example in this video: (jump to 23 second mark, apparently the embed option doesn't support time skip ;) )

What happens if a commando and an atlas run into each other going full speed. Now I'm curious.

Ever see Starwars VI Return of the Jedi...yoiu know that part on endor where the speeder bike tropper falls off his bike at full speed hits a tree and bounces off? replace the tree with an atlas and that sums it up and hell the speeder bike troopers somewhat resemble commandos anyway.

yeah cool, but still doesn't explain why it's a big deal for missles to be mounted in the arms. damage is damage. Lock ons can be got from other mechs scouting so need less accuracy than a beam that is a DOT and requires this level of control to keep the dot on the prize.

it's better for SRMs to be on the fast-aim arms than in a torso. not an issue for LRMs, but a big difference for SRM.

The reload time on SRMs takes quite a while longer... you really want to fire it with as much ease and precision as possible, a wasted SRM shot is way more painful than a wasted small laser shot.

The Commando has SRMs, which are dumb-fire weapons. They don't lock-on so you need to be able to aim them efficiently.

It's a mugger. Good guns, decent speed and armour, it pops in quick, helps pick off a mech engaged with someone else, and hops out. Hit and runs, smash and grabs, you mane it, that is what it's for. If you want a pure scout, hop in a Jenner or a Cicada, but if you want to drop in, say hi (with missiles), and slip away, the Commando is the mech for the job.

It's also important because it means you can look forward whilst shooting to the side. May not seem like a big deal, but when you're bolting along at 100km/h trying to get behind an enemy mech to plant some missiles in its rump it's nice to be able to see where you're going.

Torso mounted weapons mean you have to look where you're shooting, arm mounted means you can look where you're going as well. So preferably not into a rock or an atlas.

They make a decent stealth brawler if you drop them to 5/8 and pump the armor to full. Lots of weapon and equipment configuration options.

They're a good dependable cheap light mech.

Indeed, Sort off looking at it in that light. A sort of scout escort/support role, interesting...

Commandos are ambushers, scout hunters or crit-seekers. That speed and weapon loadout let's it open up with a lot of firepower at first sight, then scoot. It can also keep up with a lot of lights. Finally, the SRMs tend to spread out over a mech, so if it's taken a lot of damage in different body parts you can hit multiple spots at once.

Think of a COM like a sawed-off shotgun. It's not an all purpose weapon and you are in trouble if it's all you have in an open field, but in an alleyway it's ON. If you try to do everything in a Commando you won't enjoy it, but with good teamwork a Commando can be extremely deadly despite its size.
