Alright... finally had an opportunity to see what all the fuss was about. Dropped into testing grounds.... :)

Okay... maybe it appears in active missions?.... ;)

Seriously?! This is what's got sand in so many peoples ***?

It's official... You've solidified my conclusion that some of you folk complain for the sake of complaining.

It all depends on which way the light is facing. I found that on crimson straights it is terribad glare going into the tunnel from the side with the sun at your back but turning around to face the sun it becomes crystal clear. On a map like moon base it's bad from any angle... PGI just didn't think this one through.

I only play Atlas and this is exactly what i mean. If you angle your cockpit to the sky then your so called 'icing' or 'dirt' is gone.

I want the "Bummy looking guy who runs up and starts washing your windows mid-battle and then asks for 10C-bills" module and then offers to spit shine your boots. Or offers you a drink of his thunderbird

I don't see the big deal about it really. I've yet to have a map where it really hindered anything although the glare could be turned down a bit as it can be annoying on a few maps

I like the glass-effect, can we get rid of the film grain now?

@OP and others who think it's ice, it's scratched glass.

@those who think it's too green: glass is green. go look at a piece of glass from the side, it's green. The thicker glass gets, the more the green is visible.

@all the aforementioned: These are battlemechs. That is thick, bullet-resistant/armored tempered glass. The rest of your 'mech doesn't look brand new, that's why the glass refracts light and shows scratches.

So, I like it, it gives the cockpit a more enclosed feeling and makes me feel like I'm in a 'mech and not Ellen Ripley's loader suit.

I haven't had a chance to get a game in (I just popped into a testing ground to see what the QQ was about), so I don't know if it's in this patch or not, but at some point I hope they add damage effects to the glass, like spiderwebbing and cracking if your cockpit gets hit.

But yeah, I dig it. Good job PGI :D

Edit: @OP: It's spelled Icy, no need for that rogue 'E' in there

How much do you make on average cbills?... them "bullet proof resistant highly scratchable makes pilot look like lazy slob" windows must seriously cost more then the mech itself because I sure woulndt risk my life going into battle with obvious handicap... PGI stuipidity at an all time high GG
It seriously ruins the gaming experience and top that theres no option that I see to turn off this idiotic addition....
personally Id like to see the genius that thought this up, drive thru heavy traffic, with thier car windshields covered in mud ...It would make a good driving simulation no?
...then why force us to put up with it? hello???....

Yea! Heck yea! Because a little glare (which is what you get except in a few isolated conditions on a map or two) is the EXACT same thing as a windshield covered completely in mud that you can't see through!
Everyone take note. Want to know why PGI dismisses a lot of threads and ideas? This example is a good.... well example.

The cockpit glare is nowhere near that bad the vast majority of time. It is mainly HPG that I've seen it glare like that and only in a few spots on that map. (Notice no other screenshots showing how "horrible" it is involve other maps?) So let's show an isolated incident where it needs to be adjusted to "prove" that it's a "bad" feature and is "ruining" the game.

The glass effect is growing on me, but what is stupid is the fact you get the worst glare when the sun is behind you. I've yet to pilot a mech were there's windows in the rear.

It's the same reason we get glare off the monitors... Cryengine culls the geometry of our cockpit (In a sense it doesn't recognize its there) and as such lighting refracts as if we have a big ol' open space behind us.

It's definitely fixable but I'm sure glass is going to require multiple optimization passes to be fully compliant.

You heard it here first; This was an indirect buff to lights, who have to angle their cockpits up a lot anyway!
