Generally speaking (for me):
  • If we have stomped the enemy team, and there has been good effort, I say "gg" in Team Chat
  • If we have lost miserably, but I feel the match was well fought, I say "gg" in Global Chat
  • If we have lost miserably, but I feel the match was NOT well fought, I say nothing
  • (Rarer) If it was a well fought match and close in score, I say "gg" in Global Chat
Else:
  • I say nothing

(words)...One of the things I really dislike about this internet generation.. (words)

I'm of the same generation. And i was in those lines of kids forced to slap gloves in a line as well. It was only slightly funny watching it devolve into a totally meaningless "guhgayguhgayguhgayguhgay...."

It was only a bit less futile in person than it is on the internet. There was/is rarely grace involved. It was exactly the same in person... meaningless.

You have fond memories of the post game gg-lineup? I just don't understand how that's possible. Then you rip on a whole generation because of ridiculous behavior modeling of the 1980's...

gg is, pretty unequivocally, a taunt towards your opponent. sometimes further modified with a 'gg close' - often used if your opponent completely stomped you. when you've had a good match, most people will comment on that in some way other than 'gg' - which is implied to carry a good bit of schadenfreude. 'it was a good game for me because it was a bad game for you'

I almost always say "gg" because that's the proper thing to do. People who get upset about someone else wishing them a good game of a match regardless of a win, loss, stomp, or cap astounds me because typing "gg" into all chat is polite and nothing more.

The fact that people actually get upset with something for wishing them a good game because it was a one-sided match is absurd. Wishing someone a good game is nothing more than being polite unless, of course, it's the whole "gg glose" remark, which I think is rude and unnecessary.

Also, the mere fact that this has to be a discussion on a forum shows that people think far too much into a two letter acronym.

In general, the volatility of the internet and the sportsmanship people appear to have in games or sports is distressing. It's a game; be polite at the end and move on whether you or your opponent wished you a 'good game'.

To me, win or lose, "gg" = thanks for the match. Unless I have reason to suspect otherwise, I give it sincerely and receive it the same.

If you take it or give it for any other reason, the problem is you, not the other people.

I guess because I understand sportmanship, and we were (and are) playing a game? No matter what level one achieves, it is still just a game. For people to get their egos involved, their panties in a bunch over it is pathetic. Period. Also sportmanship long predates the 80s. Sadly, it seems to have fully died since the social media/internet age descended.

If you can't comprehend basic courtesy, that is your failing, not mine. So complain about me not being PC all you like, if that makes you feel better. Oh....and.... GG.

I think Piranha needs to seriously get its act in gear if this is the kind of stuff being discussed.

That said, the only thought I've ever had about GG is I dislike seeing it when a game is completely 1 sided, even if it's my own teammate after we completely crush the other team. We won 12-1, and that was a good game? No, no it wasn't.

But I see far far more objectionable stuff said, so who the heck cares.

While I don't have a problem with this being discussed, Sembrin is spot on with when it's said. A completely lop-sided match is not a good game, and if the victors truly are good sportsman they won't say it. Just last night I was in a match in which our team lost 0-12. It was terrible and a player on the other team said GG. I was polite as possible and said, it wasn't a GG, but thanks anyway. I was then met with either that same player or another on the winning team replying saying, "It was for us." or something along those lines. Total {Richard Cameron} move. Thus why I generally don't say GG regardless of the outcome and whether or not it really was a good close game. At least not in MWO.

But if the winning team wins by say four or less kills and they're all pretty beat up, sure the winning team can say GG. Imo they're acknowledging the closeness of the match more so than rubbing the win in the losing teams face.

So the Seahawks shaking hands and complimenting the Broncos after the lopsided Super Bowl was bad?

That's just sportsmanship. But they'd be lying through their teeth if they were saying "good game."

And I'm one that agrees with someone else that mentioned early on in this thread that there's a difference in RL compared to in game on a screen when it's said. You can get a much better sense through facial expressions, tone etc... I also gave a very recent example (last night) of why I take GG stompings as insults.

But I don't see a comparison from a RL big game taking place in the NFL from a much smaller much less to lose scale that is online gaming.

That would be like me saying don't say GL&GH before a match because some people use it in a sarcastic manner.

Bottom line is I'm not changing what I say to placate anyone. So, as always, GG will be what I end my matches with regardless of who likes it.

Yep, in RL, not online.

Quite frankly, I'm surprised at the amount of the people that think so highly of people that play online. The trash talking {Richard Cameron} gamers far outrank the gamers that have integrity and play with respect. From my own experience it's something 80/20, if not worse.

I'm not telling you or anyone not to say it. I'm telling you how I interpret it depending on the circumstances. I don't care if you change, as I'm not going to either.

Again, you're asking someone to change their idea of sportsmanship to placate others who are upset they just lost. Ranting and raging because someone says "GG" is the poor sportsmanship, not the other way around.

How about people stop trying to dictate to others what to do?

But again, apples to oranges. Saying something positive before a match is a lot different than after and some interaction has taken place, such as a stomping.

I don't rant and rave about it. I'm posting my opinion because this thread is here for it. For anyone that has been gaming online for any period of time, they've/I have been dealing with this for a while. This is actually the first time I've ever really gotten into a discussion about it.

Why you think I'm "trying" to change peoples minds is a little beyond me at this point. Especially after I've said otherwise. I can only tell you so many times this is just my opinion on what it means to me.

I never said YOU were ranting and/or raving

Why does everyone take everything so personally around here?

Again, GG means jsut that. Sure there are Dbags that say it to be condescending and there's those that say F you after they lose. That's not going to stop ME from being a good sport. You want to change things then don't let others dictate what's acceptable simply because their sensitivities can't handle things.

Because it's text and it was vague. So I simply "defended" myself lightly. My response of ranting and raving was simply a fyi. I wasn't offended, I actually took it as you "didn't know". So I cleared it up. It really wasn't a big deal, no need to make it one.

"Sure there are Dbags that say it to be condescending and there's those that say F you after they lose."

If that wasn't about the norm for me, that'd be one thing. That's normal for every online game I play. That's why my opinion is the way it is. Yes, be a good sport as online gaming in general needs it. Just because I have a poor attitude in the way I believe GG is being used doesn't mean I m a {Richard Cameron} when I play. I just don't say anything which, imo, isn't a bad thing. As far as changing things...? I could care less because nothing is going to change. It is nice to vent a bit, and I typically do it with friends. But in the end... It doesn't matter.
