The traditional role of a light mech is first and foremost recon. The game mechanics of course severely limit this since we are restricted to a generally small area. Just abut anyone can zoom out while walking along and spot the enemy. S recon really isn't that important.
Another role of a light mech is to attack rear areas and disrupt supply. Not present in this game so that is out too.
A light mech simply does not have the armor or firepower to attack anything bigger in any sort of assault role unless I a group. Not to say it cant out maneuver a single slower mech and take it out. A common and wise practice.
It should not be used to hunt down other light mechs. As someone stated earlier they rarely leave the exchange in good shape. However nothing scares off light mechs harassing a heavy or assault then another light shooting and keeping up with it while its trying to out maneuver its target.
According to the lore of Battltech, if you played the game, heavies and assaults would travel in a line to protect each other and prevent lights from getting behind them.
So for this game the role of lights should be to do minor advanced recon. Get out there and find the enemy so slower units can prepare.
Harass or disrupt enemy positions. It will force that Stalker from a prime firing position, or uproot an embedded group, or draw fire away from the assaults or simply as a distraction before a big push.
Look for and eliminate stragglers or solo mechs.
And if needed chase away that pesky enemy light behind your lines.
Don't chase the squirrel. It could be just there to make you turn your head, or to get you to follow it to the assaults waiting just over the hill.
