Is this even a question? Jenner, Shadow Hawk, Cataphract, Victor. Was a hard call on the Victor or Highlander, Victor won out by a coin toss.

It most certainly is.

The "de facto" choices as "best" aren't always people preferred choices to run. I was running Victors, for instance, long before it was Meta, and back when HGN, Stalker and Atlas pilots were telling me I was gimping my team by doing so. Now everyone wan't to drive one. (Shame most of them use the most versatile "big" chassis simply to play Pogostick).

And the answers seem to be bearing this out.

As a good and loyal son of the Lyran Commonwealth my choices would be thus:

Light: Victor - VTR-DS
Medium: Battlemaster - BLR-1S
Heavy: Highlander HGN-733C
Assault: Atlas - AS7-D-DC

oh wait there no CW yet and thus no real role playing.... Dang it... Ok for real -

Light: Jenner - JR7-D(S) (which I renamed Remembrance)
Medium: Shadowhawk - SHD-2D2 (although with the recent adjustment to the Hunchbacks my old venerable Founders HBK-1G would be my second choice)
Heavy: Jagermech - JMS-DD (with Muromets CTF-IM a close second)
Assault: Atlas - AS7-D-DC (the ECM it packs is just too good to ignore/keep home)

Indeed. For me, assault was a toss-up between the HGN-733C and the BLR-1G. I like my 1G laser boat that moves like a mech 20 tons lighter. But the deciding factor was jump jets, because canyons and hills don't climb themselves. And if I'd been asked before the Gauss change I'd have said the HGN-733 (no "C" at the end of it), I nicknamed it "The Beast".

Assault: One of the Victors... Can't decide between the 9S, 9K, or Dragon Slayer

Love the Protector nod. Orions are one of my favorite big uglies, visually (along with the Ilya). I think the Modelers improved on Alex's design, TBH. And the Protector is my favorite ON1 by far. I just wreck things better with my dual ac10 "Jackhammer" Ilya.

Have they changed something on Hunchbacks?

ILYA MURDERMETZ

not too scary on paper but those ac10s pounding away on an 86 kph mech? Pure gold.

Since the readjustment pass done recently, in about 50 matches or so I've found my Hunchbacks are MUCH more survivable. I'm also noting that my hunches are not acting like they are made from delicate crystal waiting for an enemy mech to look in my direction before it shatters, depriving me of most of my weapons.

JM6-FB Firebrand (close second CTF-IM)
STK-5S (close second VTR-9B)

I'm going to post a less serious list - if I wasn't so srs about the meta:

Light: Commando-2D (class SHS troll) or Commando-1D (I like the shield arm)
Medium: Any Random Hunchbacks (minus the GI... don't tell Jman this... it's the only medium where I enjoyed every non-MC variant)
Heavy: Quickdraw-5K (it is still better than the Jester, plus fond memories)
Assault: Stalker-3F or Stalker-5M (it felt at home, somehow)

Light: Raven 3L (although the Ember is now a very close second here)
Ecm, erppc and lots of hit and run sniping fun

Medium: Shd-5M (only medium chassis I currently own is the shadow hawk)
Don't play this class much but when I do I almost always incorporate some sort of light hunting weapons to it.

Heavy:Jm6-FB (My favorite mech)
Fire support at its finest. The right hand mech to any brawling assault.

Assault: As7-D-DC (Ecm brawler... brings a new meaning to fun)
Big, bulky, and a 70 alpha that makes mechs melt if they get within 270m of him.
