The theory behind this suggestion is that in our contemporary war machines there are generally audible warning devices to allow the crew to know when they are being "painted" and to be able to take immediate action rather than waiting to be hit.

If people were warned whenever they were targeted, everyone would refrain from hitting "R" more than they currently do - which would be a disaster for LRM users.

Besides, if we keep removing the danger from MWO, it'll cease to be fun.

Maybe have an advanced module that does this... but it had better do only that :(.

That, and also, some people would set up macros to hit the R key constantly :D.

In one patch during open beta, there actually was an indicator warning for when you were targeted. PGI took it out because it did various things, one of them is that it (if I recall correctly…) took away from gameplay a bit. Here’s some of my observations and likely some reasons why PGI took it out also:
  • It was a no crit, no tonnage, no module, nothingness way of knowing when/if there was a mech around you that had LOS. It was pretty OP.
  • It was annoying.
  • People spammed it just for that purpose to annoy people, and/or:
  • Players never used it so that it wouldn’t alarm the opposing team.
  • Spotting was pretty hard to do, since once the person knew they were targeted they started to look around everywhere to try and find you.
  • Decline in LRM boats as a result from the lack of targeting.

voted no, for been there done that didnt work well

as stated by moon
it failed pretty hard

it was just to powerful for something that did not have any drawback
yeah even tho it was fair as everyone had it

if you were a scout, and found an enemy gaussapult sneaking way way way out far left setting up for some juicy snipes
you could not just sit on him with a tag because he would hear "targeted" and know he was not alone

if we used the old MW2 30,0000km 360degree radar range, sure it would be neat
but MWO's radar model just dosnt allow for this kind of thing
and quite frankly i much prefer the feel of MWO's play to anything else we have had in the past
so a simple warning that destroys that game play is a no no

As the previous 2 said, been there, done that,. no need to repeat it at all.

But then again, that didn`t stop skirmish mode from happening, either. Sooo....

Based on the feedback received here, I concede the point. Some of these things I had not considered.

Thanks.

Ah, yes, there may be roles that depend on being unnoticed, yet need to target.

I'd only accept this if active and passive radar scans were implemented.... with active telling you this, but also allowing you to be targeted without LoS (withing a 500m or so range) and non-coverable by ECM.
