As a lone wolf, I was proud to get into the top 50 with a a Shadowhawk. I didn't play that much...no time. No Consumables, but, I have to admit, based on the scoring, and the methodology, it amounts to more of being aware of opportunities to steal kills. Once I realized that going after solidary targets or wasting time one on one with a heavy or assault with little or no damage, I disengaged, and moved on looking for kills, which padded my assists.

I think I played maybe 50 games, tops. Ranked oops, 42; just checked...hrm. So; as a measure of skill; who knows.

Like someone else mentioned, maybe with the drop module, tourneys will be more team centric, and then it will be more interesting.

I still enjoyed myself and made some 12-15mil doing it.

You'd be surprised at how unlucky you can be in getting "lucky". For instance, I'd wager that about a quarter of my games were all close to contributing to my score, with no non-reproducible outliers. During Sunday, I only had two-three games for the entire day that actually contributed to my standing. It's less about luck, and more about being a consistently good player. And yes, that *does* take endurance!

Not necessarily true, I played 14 heavy games my first night when I was massively sleep deprived and ended up around the 379 mark. Got some decent sleep, came back the next night and played 18 games in my trusty Ilya and was on fire (for me), peaking at 36 for heavies which dropped to 60 when I didn't play on the final day. Best game 1260 damage, 5 kills 5 assists, whereas on the first night I only had two 500+ dmg games.and was struggling for kills and assists.

I have a craptastic work schedule ranging from Friday through Sunday as a Part-time worker, so anything that happens during that time I am basically barred from participating.

That is bad, really bad, meaning that I have to either race home and play a few matches before going to bed or give up the little sleep I can have before going to work again.

Extending the tourney to a week or just 5 days would be the best course of action because it would give players with dumb work schedules time to opt-in.

I got 333rd place in the Blackjack bar because I could only play 4-5 matches per night before going to bed.

I want a 1 hour tournament. You start the clock, you get 60 minutes to get whatever you get, and you end. No do overs.

You have the regular three days to pick your start time, put in your hour, and done.

Time limit has several problems, starting with game client instability. Match limit would be alot better.

Yeah... And I unfortunately messed the first day I not realising I didn't bring Seismic most of the time on my first day of matches. Pretty sure I should have gotten a 8 or 9 kill game with that...

Out of the notable matches I counted.
4 - 7 kills
4 - 6 Kills
12 - 5 kills
6 - 4 kills

It was fun trying to best the leaders when I could.. ;)

I think the number one complaint I see is that people feel that this unfairly favors those who have a lot of free time. I would propose that scoring be based on a per game average. It seems to me this would balance out a lot of the luck factor (good and bad) as well as the "endurance" factor. I'd also like to see some of the following suggestions considered:

1) Average over all games (see above)
2) No teams for or against. Not only can you not drop as a team, you don't have to worry about facing a team. All games are solo drops for all participants who have opt'd in. This Increases balance/fairness.
3) Changes to scoring: Add points for spotting, capping (once per match), component destruction. This would increase team play and these are arguably valuable events as you get cbill bonuses for them during matches. I'd also like to see a damage taken point value for those who "take one for the team"
4) No points on disconnected players - or have them self distruct when disconnect
5) Publish position with totals. You are 1072/3819 so you can see how you stack up.
6) In weight class events have a total class for the specific chassis event. For example, there would have been an overall Medium category as well in this past event.

Just my $.02. Although I personally would like to see Arty and Air Strikes not count towards totals if this is supposed to be somewhat skill based.

The problem with average score is that if Elo is working properly, then the winner is basically randomly chosen.

These "luck" games and "bad" games are confusing me. I grinded the shit out of MWO on Sunday as I couldnt play Saturday, and only played an hour or so Friday. However, a bulk of my games were 12-2, 12-3 wipes. No matter my skill as a pilot there is no way one medium can win a game solo. Unfortunately, the PUGs I was dropping with were new players and I had matches where I would put up ~500 damage with 1 kill, and the second highest on my team was ~150... with multiple players sub 100 damage. The key is capitalizing on the matches where the ELO gods are in your favor.

Again, this anti-arty/airstrike arguments for the tournament is a moot argurment. Arty/Airstrikes are not heat seeking, gauranteed ~200 damage modules. It still takes some skill to be able strategically place the arty and AA in the most efficient and tactical place. I saw dozens of horribly wasted 40,000 C-Bills placed during the weekend. There is a subtle art to AA/arty placement. And again, they are available to EVERYONE for C-Bills. I spent 80k a match and still made ~180k a match (on the good ones) without premium time and in my non-phoenix mechs (100k profit on good games.)

Though I do like your point about no-group drops with the tourney folks. Though that would have significantly increased MM time and decreased player pool.

Remeber the best defense for arty users is movement. That and the red smoke is not a care package from CoD or a powerup...

so i really enjoyed this tournament, i liked seeing my name on a list. playing my CN9-D i got to 30th place at about 1.939 pts and i played my butt off, i probably coulda bettered my score to about 100-150 more if i played like 30-50 more matches, but the top score was 2400?? i mean dayumn thats an average 240 pts a match considering:

wins 200
not dying 200
if you did 750 damage average/match=500 pts since taking both arty strike and air strike were mandatory
so youre left with 1500 pts off of kills and assists
equates to 150 pts/match....
the most realistic way would be 5 kills 5 assists

some of these top lvl mediums i say probably mostly synced dropped with clans and friends to get 10 games with these values or better

i think this is pretty unfair to those who were truly solo but just my 2 cents. i probably had 2 games that i was godlike and that was about 220 pts. but anyways was a fun tournament

I was a top 5 Griffin, and I was not sync dropping with my Unit. I suffered through PUGs and the scorn of the ELO gods to get my score. Not fair to the competitors that busted ass to assume that they must have cheated to score higher than most.

In fact, I'll sum it up by referring to a message I sent to another pilot:

"To be entirely honest, I'm surprised that my Blackjack turned out to be my focus during the tourney. I really, really thought that it was going to be my Ilya - I consider myself to be a better heavy-chassis player than a medium pilot. Thing is, I was getting utterly creamed whenever I tried to go heavy, and for some reason I was just doing better in my Blackjack overall. People were really giving it their all, and my sluggish heavy builds were getting pounded into fine powder by well-coordinated, concentrated firepower long before I could get any shots off of my own.

I figured that if I was going to survive, I needed to pick up the pace with a lighter, faster mech.

I greatly enjoy the 1X chassis. Its energy hardpoints are very generous, and allow a number of different builds. Plus, it can equip an engine beefy enough to allow just enough speed to take advantage of the BJ's nice and slim profile. With an XL 295, it's a 45-ton medium that can play a lot like a well-armed and better-armored light, which was exactly what I wanted. It's nimble and somewhat hard to hit, with short and stubby little arms that are fairly hard to tear off.

I know a lot of people are averse to using an XL engine, but my reasoning is that, in a 45-ton mech with 50% of its firepower on either side and a fairly low amount of armor, if I ever get into a situation where I'm going to lose a torso, I'm dead anyway or not long from it, and not combat capable enough to justify surviving anyway. Of course, there was the odd match where I'd get a side torso wrecked early, but I'd say that was no more than 5% of the time.

With the fastest engine, the Blackjack can torso twist like a champion, which helps spread out the damage. My only complaint is its sluggish turn speed, which messed with me more than once in close brawls. I actually view the locked arms as a positive, because the lack of lateral aim deviation really helps my shots all stay precisely on one target. That's important, because 8 medium lasers need to be very accurate.

Because of ghost heat, I grouped the six in the arms to fire with one mouse button, and grouped *all* of the lasers to fire in chainfire mode with the other. Short, sweet, and easy to manage in a fight. Chainfired medium lasers give you that extra edge in a brawl - a little bit of staying power for when both you and your opponent are running really hot. It makes the difference when the bad guy struggles to hit you with a salvo of lasers and shuts down, leaving you still able to stay heat neutral with careful, controlled laser shots in his damaged sections. I got a large number of kills this way, by avoiding shots with my speed and outlasting my opponent with patient laser fire.

Of course, that 30 point alpha with six medium lasers is nothing to sneeze at, either, and I'm able to alpha that weapon group over and over again without worrying too much about heat. It's easy to click to fire six lasers, wait a half second, and double tap with the other two to avoid ghost heat and add 10 more points of damage.

I find that fast Blackjacks are good knife fighters - small and seemingly underpowered enough for enemies to often pass you over in favor of a bigger, more apparently dangerous target. This works great in your favor, as you are able to nimbly slip in behind the biggest of mechs and unleash all eight lasers to the vulnerable rear armor, with excellent precision thanks to the locked arms. Holding down the arm lock buttons allows a sort of "aim mode" that slows down the reticule when you need to be a little more precise.

You don't have to rely on sneak attacks, though. The speed and high response times of the XL 295 allow you to use cover like a trained gunfighter. The massive amount of chain fired lasers make opponents somewhat intimidated by you, as though they fear you can do more damage than you really can in one go, so it is very possible to nip out of cover and suppress the heck out of a small group with a rapid-fire barrage. I'm surprised this actually works. I've even managed to cause an entire lance to turn and run even though I was scouting on my own!

By poking out of cover, smacking an enemy with an alpha, and then quickly slipping back into cover, you can win the war of attrition so long as you're careful. Dashing between cover point to cover point at more than 110 kph is a bit of an art, and it's loads of fun. The Blackjack can aggressively run over fleeing enemies, and can gain ground quickly. It's also *extremely* proficient at legging distracted lights from a position of cover.

So, all in all, I get the most success from doing one of three things:

1) Use cover and play like a trained gunfighter - poke out just enough to get off your shots, and then take a single step back into safety, and wear the enemy down.

2) Knife em in the back - move with a group so that they pay more attention to the bigger mechs, and slip to heavily wound or kill the enemy team's power players. Don't be afraid to run, because it's better to seriously wound an enemy and get away in mint condition than it is to duel to the death and kill the guy, but end up so damaged that you're easy pickings for the next bad guy.

3) Turn and burn. Use your speed to get into a persuing mech's face, blaze away with your six all-fire lasers, and then plink with chainfire at the weakened bits when you get too hot. If you scare them into playing defensive, you can run and catch your breath for more six-shot alphas. If the enemy presses the attack, you can outlast them with speed, torso-twisting, and careful shooting. They're likely to overheat trying to ground you, but if you're careful (and I'm careful enough maybe 80% of the time), you won't. When they do, it's over for them.

Anyway, sorry to carry on. That's how I play Blackjack. There are lots of people who find success with ballistic builds in other variants, but for me, the 1X is where it's at. I find the Blackjack too lightly tonned and armored to be anything other than a fast skirmisher, and I mean it: *many* of my kills came from me specifically targeting BJs because a lot of them are sluggish and easy to hit. With that little armor, I feel that you *need* to be tough to hit."

i see alot of people saying they played tons of games. Maybe I got lucky or maybe i just planned better this time from getting so burnt out last time. I ended up 5 in kintaro's with all but 2 matches played on sunday. On sunday i played a total of about 4 hours in cockpit or around 34-36 matches total.

The trick isnt in playing tons of matches, but in getting ones that are better than your previous counted ones. I was taking screenshots and looking at points so i knew when i match i had would boost my score. Once you have those ten good matches in your score is not going to go up much unless you beat another good score you had already. I also went for the less is more approach and if i could get 10 decent games and be happy with a place i was ready to leave it.

Of course that went out the window once i hit fifth and i did finish off the night till the end last night, but not one match after midnight came even close to games i had earlier.

I just wasn't going to go for that grindfest I tried the last time, getting so burnt out after a day i just said eff it. I tried to be a little more picky this time and just see if i could get my name on there. It was a good feeling, and no offense to you warriors who pulled out all the stops over the weekend, but im just to old a man to sit in a chair that long without a back massager and preferably built in toilet, microwave and beer cooler.

So hats off, and maybe we shall see each other next time!
