I love my misery. It's a solid platform for an AC20, and the huge side torsos help you sponge damage really well. If you go this route, definitely remember to turn after shooting to absorb fire in your right side, or if you're using a loadout that puts weapons on both sides, to twist to spread damage.

Protector. You will love it. You can run it like a mini atlas and brawl with anything your size or smaller.

Wow, these are pretty different mechs. Hard to compare them.

If you like how Stalkers feel, then get a Misery. It can hit much harder (or at least from longer range) than an Orion and is tough as nails too.

On the other hand, I really like my Protector too. It's the only Orion with a high torso energy mount, which is useful for "peek shooting".

On an absolute "one mech to rule them all" basis, I think the Misery is more dangerous though.

In my experience the Protector is more of a fire support mech, but I say this from the point of view of a low-ish middlin player at best. In other hands it may well dance and sing. But Stand up brawler? Only if you are really really good.
YMMV, though.

well it seems that the protector is well loved, but in truth it is a pain to get the right build for you. I have them both and I'd say Misery, you will farm C-bills like a boss, you will have one of the best mechs in the game right now and you will do tons of dmg and live for ever and ever.

In the long run I'd say you should get both, since both are fun and good, but lets face it Misery is just waaaaaaaaaaaay better in any way you look at it than the protector.

Misery. Hated orions. Dont have enough armor to be that slow.

I haven't tried the Orion, but I sure like the Misery! As solar levitas says, smack an AC 20 in there for a mighty punch!

I have mine set up with an AC 20 and three Large Pulse Lasers, and I've had some of my best matches in this bad boy!

In a direct comparison, the Misery wins every time. It can "tank" far more damage than the Orion can, while mounting obscene firepower.

My issue with the Misery is the same with the entire Stalker chassis. They have the absolute worst mobility of any mech in the game so far. If you make a mistake in positioning, that's it. You're done.

Not entirely sure where the complaints about the Orion being slow are coming from. I run mine with a STD295 and it moves at 70kph. More than fast enough to redeploy if needed, and just about the only thing it needs to worry about are Victor's (in a straight up 1v1).

But as preference, I absolutely adore my Protector. The best advice would probably be to mess around in Smurfy's and see if you can build mechs you think you'd like to play, then base your decision on that.

They're very different beasts. Protector is a superb support and anti light mech. Misery is generally a frontline heavy damage mech. If I had to choose I'd go for the Misery for a reason not mentioned by anyone here - its weapon ports are very high up so you can expose a minimum area while unloading your entire payload. I personally happily use both when I need to and both have the same flaw... no jump jets.

Yes, if you are choosing between Protector and Misery, the answer is in fact Dragon Slayer or Heavy Metal.

Misery. This is not really a question, IMO. One of the best assaults vs. a mid-grade heavy.

Problem with that evaluation is that you shouldn't be doing the same job with those two mechs. Also when the new restrictions come in... one is a heavy the other is an assault so team dynamics change a lot. The argument really comes in would you take a Misery over a Dragon Slayer or a Protector over a Cataphract 3D. In either case I'd say no but I like (and use) all four to do specific jobs. That's of course a huge IMO but having jump jets is a huge advantage even after the changes last week.

With the current meta, both are somewhat lacking. However, Misery is probably the better of the two.

I think Protector wants to be a brawler, but with its squishiness, and short-ranged options limited, it functions better as a fire support platform. Consider: Protector

Misery is somewhere between heavy fire support and situational brawler, as is has flexible hardpoints for both roles. Misery.

depends on your play style.

misery is a better brawler, it tanks like a beast.

orion is a better fire support platform. you can't be up in the front due to the ridiculous CT size.

That being said, I only use the Misery when I need a few rounds of easy mode.

Real men drive Locusts.

The class restrictions make the point stronger, IMO. You could have a conversation including Misery and Dragon Slayer and bring one or the other depending on what you want to do. There is no reason whatsoever you'd ever bring a Protector vs. a CTF-3D (or Ilya or JM6 if you're talking fire support). So I come back to what I said:

<shrug> Opinion, of course, but from my POV, Misery is a need-to-own mech, Protector just isn't.

That sounds too much like the very sad people who only ever pilot about 5 mech's and think that makes them a good pilot. Try using a mediocre or bad mech well instead. ;)

Run up against a light only 12 man and you'll see where a protector shines (our 2 protectors racked up 10 of the 12 kills each of the last two occasions we met that setup in 12 man).

AKA, the Protector is a tool - use it appropriately rather than trying to make a knock off of another setup.
