Paul asked the MWO community a question in the launch module feedback thread, that I think deserves an answer:

Let me preempt this storm with this statement:

Yes, we wanted to allow players to create a 2-12 player group and launch.. but as you can see by the numbers and how it will sku matches that this edge case is just not feasible. There HAVE been talks and it's not 100% off the board, but there is also the potential of having a group queue later on down the road which will just pack groups of whatever sizes together. There are problems inherent with this as well though. Odd man group sizes cause problems filling slots. ie. if we break the queues into direct solo and group queues... what is going to fill the 12th slot if a team launches with 11 players?

So let's try to answer that question: If PGI had two queues, one "Solo Queue" and one "Group Queue", and solo players could pick either one to play in, are there any solo players out there who would rather choose to play in the group queue, in order to fill out the 12th player slot?

I'll start by providing my answer. Given the choice, I'd rather fill out the last slot on a team than drop in a solo queue.

MWO: Play with three or less of your friends!

I would fill the 12th spot of an 11 man group, but if it's just lumping random groups together and there's a chance i'll be the 12th person on a team of four 2 man groups and one 3 man then I'd rather play in the queue of solo players and take my chances with 12 randoms.

isn't it three or less?

I've never been in a four man with four of my friends.

I'd definitely play in the group queue.

You are correct sir. I fixed it. That's a sad comment, isn't it, when the ability to play with four friends is actually an overstatement?

I would much rather be the 12th in a mixed queue than I would withe the current situation.

If a Group Queue was released that matched groups first and then filled with players, I would never solo queue again... ever.

I would rather take four 2-man groups and a 3-man than 12 random pugs. Because I know that AT LEAST those players will want to do well for their teammates sake and its highly likely that they're proficient at group tactics. In a pug, its everyone for themselves nearly all the time. You might as well call it YOLO queue just like League of Legends.

Again, if a Group Queue was released where individuals would fill slots, I would never solo queue again.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I would rather be in that four 2-man groups and a 3-man versus a full competition 12 man drop using voicecom. If Group Queue meant I had to face that every single time, I would still never solo queue.

I'd play as a single in a mixed group queue. As long as full 12 man groups aren't allowed in that queue. Going to be problems no matter how you do it. 6, 2 men groups are no match for an 11 and 1. Can't see a way to make it balance fairly. Perhaps if the matchmaker tried to match groups by size first, then filled in on both sides.

I would... just follow the group who`s mechs looks to be most similar to mine weight and speedwise, and play smart.

same thing I do when I pug today, just with a higher chance of me not joining with 3 solo players that are all running around like beheaded chickens. :)

I'd definitely play in the solo queue. I've been asking PGI for a premade-free PUG-only queue for 18 months.

Don't worry about the 12 man teams dude. Occasionally playing against a full 12 man won't hurt you. Indeed, keeping those guys in the main queue helps the game grow its population by not introducing an artificial separation and exposing players to the larger units. And given that they are likely going to be matched up against large teams on the other side, it really isn't a problem.

When you worry about such things, and separate out the 12 man queue, all you do is create incentive for sync dropping and junk like that.

Just don't worry about it man. Let everyone play in the same queue.

Except for give players a solo queue if they really want to play in an environment with no grouping at all.

That's kinda what we have now and those players in small groups are often worse than pugs.

The only difference a pug in an 11 man team would notice is that there wouldn't be someone complaining about the team being a bunch of stupid noobs.

I'd play in it.

As long as I could either select just doing that, or just solo pub que or the solo+4man max queue.

OR select all 3, so the MM looks for all types that way queue times should be shorter for players / 2-3-4mans doing that.

As others have said, probably best if its trying to match the groups evenly first, then use filler if it takes too long to find another group to fill the gap and or if its only 1 player needed.

Not sure about the 12man vs anything lower than a 10man+2man / 10man + 2fillers, but I myself would not really mind playing against a 12 as a filler with 2 groups of 4 + a group of 3 or any other combo really.

Others may tho....and not just the filler players...those also queuing as 2man / 3man / 4man etc...

I'd like to see them give it a go at least. If its not used or not popular etc then you can take it down etc.

Everyday.

I don't often have time to sit down for more than 2-4 matches at a given time. I hate the thought of putting people on TS through that sort of thing - "Hi guys, been nice playing with you these two matches, but I gotta bail." Seems rude. Happy to play filler for people in those instances.

"what is going to fill the 12th slot if a team launches with 11 players?"

What fills the 12th slot now? How many times does a match launch and there are empty spots, zero pings, or disconnects? Get the matchmaker to drop the disconnects if there is time on the counter left, and refill the slot.
