Confirmed Via Twitter, Next Mech Is 45 Tons. Calling Vindicator Right Now

Things open up a bit more if we look at Clan 'mechs, though, with the Shadowcat and Ice Ferret (which comes with a built-in Hero, the Wolf Hunter).
I'd be most pleased to see the Shadowcat, since it fills a gap between the Adder and Nova, and gives the Stormcrow somebody to hang out with. It's also one of the best-looking 'mechs in the BTU.
However:
The Vindicator is going to have the Dragon's problem of a front CT you can shoot from any angle, and its weapons load is schizophrenic. It's also slow as cold molasses, which is a death sentence for anything under 70 tons in this game.
The Wyvern will get significantly better hit boxes than the poor Vindi, since it is proportioned much like a Spider. Unfortunately it'll be far too tall, and while a tall, skinny profile is good in theory, the Wyvern, like the Vindicator, is too slow to take much advantage of a narrow target profile.
The Shadowcat ends up with the unfortunate combination of the worst traits of a Hunchback and a Raven: most of its firepower concentrated into one place (in this case a big tube rather than a box), and being all legs.
The Ice Ferret towers over everything short of a Hellbringer in the first place, but isn't particularly skinny, so I expect it to have the same basic problem as the Cicada: too big to be slow, too slow to be small.
I guess what I'm really trying to say here is that if they're going to introduce another Medium, I want my Hellhound back, dammit.
No, not this one.
This one!

That is, does a hatchetman get 45 tons of weapons, armor, etc... AND the hatchet? Or does he have to pay tonnage for the hatchet itself, as though it were any other weapon?
Cause if it comes out of the mech's tonnage, and takes critical slots.. seems like it'd be totally craptacular.
It comes out of the 'mech's tonnage. It is "just another weapon".
Edit: A melee weapon weighs (tonnage/15) tons, so 3 tons for the Hatchetman's hatchet. It takes up one critical slot per ton of weight. You also need a full set of arm and hand actuators to be allowed to mount one.
And it's not totally craptacular in TT because it does (tonnage / 5) damage when it hits; or 9 damage for the Hatchetman's hatchet - as much as a kick, but only to the upper body (a normal BT punch without a melee weapon does (tonnage/10) damage).
Whether or not it'd be craptacular in MWO would depend on the implementation of melee and whether or not the hatchet itself was part of the arm hitbox or had its own (and what HP it would have), or if it had no hitbox at all.

I don't care if the hatchet works or not initially.
Hatchetman!
Anything else will be a little disappointing.

Thanks man! I've been looking for this pic for a while now so I can put it in our guild recruitment thread in Outreach.

Vindicatior would be absolutely aweful IMO. It doesn't do anything that another mech already in the game can't do better.

It'd certainly offer us a different looking mech, other than the usual humanoid/chicken-walkers that we've had. Of course, I'm not too sure they want to introduce an 11 energy hardpoint mech with ECM!

P.S. Again to reiterate, it's on the Horizon...not the next mech. So I'm gonna still bet on a Heavy, with my frontrunner being the Guillotine.

Wyvern and Wolftrap are viable choices but don't have the variants at the current timeline to support.
Phoenix Hawk is unseen
Hatchetman has tonnage dedicated to melee attacks not part of current game model, so unless the melee thing is about to be released I'd say thats out too.
There is not much else left

Shadowhawk is not the best medium, that is a personal opinion and is determined by piloting styles. Sure it is a good mech but the only thing that makes it so is the fact it has ballistic points. Other than that it dies just as fast as any other paper medium. Myself personally, I do much better in a griffin, much better manueverability and torso twist.
