I don't think anyone was being nasty, we were simply trying to help correct a pretty common misconception about FF armor. Apologies if it came across that way.

To answer the original question: I use Endo + FF on most of my lights. There are a few mediums where it is appropriate like a Centurion or a Hunchback (something with whole armor sections with no hardpoints). But that's about as high as I go. I never use FF without already having Endo Steel. It CAN be used on heavier mechs but that is pretty rare.

I respect you for saying that, i didn't mean to cause a misconception but like i said before in college one thing i excelled in was english. It was supposed to spur conversation and thoughts. this topic was actually asked 2 years ago but i wanted to know people thoughts on the matter because clans will us FF.

I apologize if anybody got the wrong idea, definitely didn't mean to do any harm

I'd kill to get he FF mechanic changed. Even in TT is was always the weak sister choice. Understandable from home modifications and field upgrades (because lets face it, you can't realistically rip out the mechs bloody skeleton and replace it, especially in the field) but for "factory" designs, made no sense. I always wanted FF to allow you to increase your Max Armor by 1.12 and 1.2%. respectively. simply be a way to allow you to exceed the hard cap on armor.

I may be missing something, but wouldn't they still be equally useful, FF would just be cheaper? I've come across a couple of these builds and I've gone ES anyway because it has more potential for future builds.

pretty sure that is what i said. The FF is cheaper, so if one cannot use the extra tonnage anyhow, it is more efficient to use the FF. UNLESS you constantly change builds. I don't.

seems silly to start underweight. Saving 4 tons, but having no crits to use it is pointless, whereas, it might be what allows you to max armor that same build. Yes, you could also up armor with straight tonnage with Endo, but at a much higher cost. It is simply inefficient design. I can see your point about switching builds, but I tend to do my build hopping in Smurfy, and stick pretty much with what I design in actual practice. I only build hop when the nerf Yoyo makes a design less viable.

For me, that's often enough that I will always spring for the higher-cost-but-equal-or-better-in-every-other-way Endo-steel. Then again, I don't get rid of the chassis I buy. For someone who just needs to power through a mech to master a better variant, I can absolutely understand taking the cheaper, "good enough" option.

Agreed. It really just makes mechs that come stock with FF cost you about 400k to 800k more cbills because you have to downgrade the armor then upgrade the structure. They do need to change the way it works.

Honestly, at this point I'm almost convinced that Blood Wolf is a troll. And yet... and yet there are people out there that might conceivably stubbornly hold his views in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary. There is that old maxim, after all... Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity.

Frankly, I'm torn. So instead, I'm going to go get some popcorn, maybe smoke some [perfectly legal herbal product] in my [glass multi-chamber tobacco pipe], and watch the show.

I`ve been doing the exact same thing... Having Holland close is a wonderful thing.

With all due respect, please acept my apologies if my postt somehow came across as "hostile", though I cannot quite fathom how they could be construed in such a fashion as to be recieved in that way.

As you may have noticed, it is a long standing moisconception that FF armor gives some sort of damage reduction or similar, which is, as you agree to, entirely false.

However, despite your in-depth grasp of the language, you unfortunately failed to openly communicate or even imply to us that you did in fact understand this difference, which gave many (including myself) the impression that you were either

A. Truly unknowing of said fact but entirely dismissive of it`s possibility
or
B. Well informed of it but intentionally trolling.

Which is the point at which I washed my hands of the issue as further discourse would have been pointless under those circumstances.

TLDR: As far as I`m concerned, no harm has been done, just an unfortunate misunderstanding. I think somebody may or may not have gotten slapped, I wasn`t watching and was stoned anyway :lol:Posted Image

Ferro armor in MWO does exactly the same thing it does in TT Battletech: It sucks up 14 crits and gives you more armor points per ton. It does NOT allow one to mount more armor, nor does it reduce damage.

As for usage, all of my lights run it, a few mediums, a couple heavies, no assaults. Endo steel structure is always the first choice because it has equal bulk to ferro armor, but provides greater weight savings. If you can run both, great. But if you have to choose between the two, endo is always the way to go.

On my Dragon. I use the stock engine on it so the FF helps to keep the weight down.

I run FF on some mechs, but not too often. It does seem to be mostly used on lights.

I do currently have it equipped on my Catapult K2 "Snaggle Tooth", so occasionally it has it's uses on a bigger platform.
