Without just saying "working as intended™" (despite that being the case), the MM is quite indiscriminant about builds, map, or playstyle, let alone "skill" (Elo is not entirely determining of skill, rather it is you understanding and execution of it).
What tends to happen is that players are not always well educated about how to conquer a particular build and playstyle... so the level of understanding "exerted" by your team or your opponent usually determines the outcome. Mistakes accumulate and magnify quicker when "core competency" is not achieved, thus more roflstomps.
It is understandable that even the AC40 Jager will suck on Alpine, but smarter pilots will know how to place themselves amongst the crowd in order to be effective. It doesn't mean the team is on the same page or clue, but these things are either learned/copied through attrition, or by other people vocally whining/giving up.
