I've tried it with ERLL, but found the heat adds up too quickly. I've had this mech still running down to 17%, so it has great survivability. The AMS helps with that a little. My w/l ratio is 2.25 and a k/d ratio of 3.50. With a steady hand, some torso twisting, and smart use of cover, the AL can still shine. I certainly think it helps that a lot of people will ignore the AL for other mechs that they perceive to be a greater threat.

I currently use twin PPCs, twin medium lasers, twin SSRMs along to a XL275 engine >> link to the buid
I suggest to create two weapon groups for the PPCs: group 1 fire both, group 2 chain fire.
Be careful you don't have BAP equipped, so you have to rely on PPCs chainfire to counter an ECM if needed.

Not optimum, but can decently: snipe, support with lrm, and 3 ML for close - but not all at the same time (hot) and with limited speed (76.6 kph - enough to stick with the mob) and easy to reach build (in terms of C-BIlls)

contemplating dropping the ams, maybe dropping the arm medium laser for a tag to help the team.
Well from the two builds you posted, Your Laser fast build could drop a whack of armor from the left arm and maybe a ton of the AMS ammo and either turn the two CT med lasers into pulses or more likely turn the one med pulse into a regular med laser and find the extra ton either by dropping ams ammo or dropping a ton of armor and turn the large into a pulse.
The Exterminator, maybe trade the one med pulse for a second ton of SSRM ammo. 1 ton can go by pretty quick between two launchers.
Also, I've been using XL engines in my Cents ever since they made the CT bigger and the ST's smaller. How often are you losing a ST before CT nowadays.....? XL255 and XL300 are good options for XL builds.

If you are torso twisting in Cents properly, you should be losing ST's. However since Cents lost a lot of their tanking ability, firepower is more important.

Even in the worst case, though, if you can shield with the left arm stump, you reduce damage to 45% hitting your ST. With like 40 front LT armor and 24 internals for 64 hitpoints, that 55% damage reduction essentially makes it the equivalent of 142 hitpoints... which is more hitpoints than in the ST of *any* mech. The Atlas has a total of 126 hitpoints in the ST, and that's if it frontloads all the armor in that location.
The tough part is, of course, reacting in time to enemy fire to twist in time and tank the hit on the shoulder.

before that i used 1LPLS, 3ML slightly faster engine, also tried 1LLAS (Arm) 1 LPLS (CT) , HEATSINKS^^ was okay for pugs, but too weak for "real" fights
and with XL (abandoned for Zombiism) 2 LLAS, 2MLAS, 2SRM4

I saw this style of "Lightning Wang" build somewhere a while ago and used it to get from basic to elite on my AL, you certainly learn how to protect that arm!
Overall nicely different from the builds I could do with my other cents and well worth playing. However I don't think I regularly broke 400 damage in it, and like any other medium you need to make sure you don't go full rambo in the early game and get your arm or torso blown off.
I don't have the exact build I used to hand, but it was pretty similar.

Total damage isn't that important in MWO imho: 20 damage to one section is better than 60 spread all over a mech.
But you are right: you must avoid the first line. Let the people ignore the humble CN9. Let people know the mistake . Once you know that, survivability is not an issue, I'm often the last man standing (usually with the arm still working) because people know that the cent takes slightly more time to be killed and they prefer other targets.
It's time to bear our wangs and get back what the Shadow Hawks have stolen long ago. Lol

thank you for the feedback. as far as damage control goes, I'm quite a squirmy guy to put down unless you have a heavy meta build which can deal with that sort of thing.
I am not put off by using an xl, though. I just like being cheap.
