Just trying to comply with the wishes of "she who must be obeyed".

Besides I wouldn't want to taint the moral fibre of all of the clean living and virtuous citizens who play the game now would I? Especially the kiddies...

I used to drop with a good outfit. I enjoyed dropping with them quite a bit. Then a string of political detritus hit and I bounced back and forth as who 'we' were kept changing and the organizational politics kept happening. Before that, in other games I was a leader myself, and had to deal with politics and manipulators. I stopped posing as a leader then and really, I could give a rat's ass about petty politics.

Then I got distracted writing a novel and then trying to publish it. Took up my time.

When I returned I realized that while I enjoyed the camaraderie, that enjoyment was too often drowned by political muck.

So now I drop solo with PUGs and I still enjoy the guys (and the girls: they are out there too, you know). I like the challenge, which is vastly greater than when I dropped in a lance or synch-dropped with a couple of lances, trying to get the timing just right. But the challenge for me as a pilot is much greater. It is very hard to be consistent in my performance when I haven't the first clue who I'll be fighting alongside. And when I come up against your organized groups it is usually no contest and I just hav to admire your coordination.

But sometimes these PUGs are totally effective. We fight like each of us knows what's going down. We are aware of the situation. We notice when we need to focus fire. We stay together. We manage our heat. We hold our targets. We don't overcommit and we have all practiced aiming before we fire. Other hand sometimes I drop with one of those odd people who would just as soon shoot you in the back as shoot the red team. It happens when you drop with total strangers.

But yeah, I've been on both sides of this particular fence. PUGging has its ups and downs. But I don't have to deal with politics. I can run a high-risk gambit any time I want without having to listen to some kid with a tenth of my battle experience telling me how I should play. I don't have to listen to the wanna-be Napoleons. And I get a drop right when I am ready for a launch and can take breaks whenever I feel like it. And if I want to write a paragraph I just alt & tab over to the next book and write.

Still miss the old team, but sometimes I see them in game and they are still a great group of personalities.

Drop solo while waiting for friends to get online / waiting for CW / testing builds / no easy way to group with random or new ppl.

I find it interesting how many players drop solo simply because it's not an easy and intuitive thing to accomplish as well as those that can't drop groups because of things like group limits.

I wanted to point out that I also drop solo once in a while when I'm just trying to recruit. I'll drop out website and contact info in the game chat and then I'll do my best to offer tips and advice to what appears to be new players as the match unfolds. A lot of times I'll intentionally take a mech that isn't a front line build so that I can have more time to chat and help out others on my team with tips and advice.

1) No one in my group is online./ All of my friends quit.
2) I drop solo because most of my friends who used to play no longer do, because it was too hard to play together (see group limit sizes)
3) I'm testing myself in my go-to mechs to make sure I'm not letting my evil premade boogie-brothers carry me.
4) There's a solo-only competition with a tangible fluff reward for X amount of wins.
5) I drop only solo because Community Warfare does not yet exist.

How's the switch to 'competitive teams' treating you with Templars? I still like our beer/fun/blame Slar 4-mans. Miss you too, Kaz

I haven't played since October of last year. I left to get some things around the house in order, and tried to come back in December only to realize nothing changed in the game. So I said 'eh, i'll give it some time, some of these features will bring me back!' ... but ... but ... it's almost May and still, NOT A DAMN THING HAS CHANGED.

Actually, every time I visit MWO, I get a little more pissed, and a little more sick, as I realize it's all 'buy this, buy that'. They abuse you loyal players  Its terri-sad.

I drop solo because I may only play one or two games in between getting home from work and dinner, then a few more after dinner before finishing any household items that need attended to. If my wife ever convinces me to impregnate her, I probably will have to drop the gaming habit entirely. lol

As others have stated, real life comes first, so getting into organized groups is not a priority.

I play solo mostly because I have myasthenia gravis and speaking is very difficult and embarrassing as I slur more when I get tense and my vision goes double.

Pugging (solo dropping) is a way for people (and myself) to test our skills when outnumbered. Basically its "training" to be a better pilot, as there is far more growth when flying solo, then with a group. When alone, out numbered and out gunned, how well can you fight? Can you take on 2 other mechs and walk away, leaving 2 smoldering mechs for the scrap heap?

In those situations, its more about how well can you pilot/twist/jump/evade fire, while at the same time putting out as much DPS as your guns, and heat, allow you to do. Many battles are already won in the Mechlab alone, but that only contributes to about 40% of the battle at hand. The rest is all up to you, the pilot, and how well you can aim while under pressure. While at the same time, not running into walls/buildings/rocks/other mechs trying to circle strafe your target. The best pilots in the game, are not the ones that run in groups, but the ones that can fight on, alone, and take out 4-5 mechs, on his own.

You know that guy, the one thats the last man standing? Usually in a light or a medium, but sometimes in an assault? And he takes out the ENTIRE remaining team, ALONE! Thats the kind of pilot, and piloting I am talking about, the kinds of people that fight just as well in a team, as they do all alone. That is what Solo Dropping dose, it lets you LEARN and GROW as a pilot, because if you can fight well as a unique little snowflake, then you will be an asset to ANY Unit in the game. Not because you can fight alone, but because you have learned how to fight alone, because you have been through fire and hell, and have come out of it, alive. A better pilot, one that can land a Gauss shot, on a Flea at 800m, a pilot that can land shot after shot of AC2 into the CT of a mech.

If you cannot learn from your own mistakes, and learn what works, and what doesn't. Following your OWN "meta" and not what the masses perceive as "good". Those are the good pilots.

I drop solo because:

No community warfare.
No built in VOIP.
Related to previous, no easy way to add new friends. I'm sorry I don't write down the names exactly of people I recently played with.

LOL, but you argue vehemently with anyone who disagrees with your view, which seems to change with the wind. The only consistent theme is that those who are arguing for more choice, you hamfistedly cling to Paul's statistics stating that there is no reason for separate queues, and those who want a group queue are somehow being exclusive.

I don't even bother reading, much less responding to your posts anymore because you invoke an unholy combination of bullshit and verbosity, spending 1000 words to say absolutely nothing.

Brevity, do you speak it?

But apparently you read enough to quote it and respond.

I guess what you mean is that its hard to argue your point if you're called out for your small mindedness, double standards and hypocracy, so you don't bother to address substance and prefer to maintain your indulgent little world unchallenged which has no relation to what people actually say. Like for example representing that I cling to PGI's Stats "hamfistedly".

Comprehension, have you got it? (LOL, get it???, oh come on, that's hilarous?)

Randy, I am sad.

I look back at your posts and while it was easy to pull apart your self righteous indignant bigotry with substance and facts, watching you slump back into foul mouthed incoherent rants to defend yourself always amused me, I could count on you to brighten my day.

Not so anymore.

The best you seem to be able to offer is "TL:DR", even though we both know thats not true.

You have certainly improved in terms of protocol, but I wasn't expecting you to lose all your fight.

Your posts have become lame, limp, weak.

Perhaps you've just have learnt that you need to post inside "your weight division" as being embarressed all the time must be tiring.

But you're no fun anymore.

This is goodbye.
