Why exactly is the Timberwolf/mad cat so darn popular?

Performance wise looks alot like the Thanny (and many people love Thanny for its kickassery), only not as ugly.
Hellbringer is squishy and has almost exclusively low weapon mounts (same problem as the warhammer).
Mad dog is fine but lacks versatility and heat efficency.
Grizzly, IIRC, is not an omni. Also sloooow.
Cauldron born yeeeeees. It's almost like a clan bushie. Almost. Nothing beats bushie at being bushie.

Bushies pissed me off in my CB, they were way too maneuverable, when we saw them come to us, we used to call them the "rodents"

For those who don't know the origin of the name comes from the fact it Resembles the Marauder (Mad) and Catapult (Cat) in weapons load and physical appearance.
This is only discussing the Prime configuration. Both the A and D mount dual ERPPC's, pne of the most intimidating weapons in the game, and heatsinks to use them. backed my an sRM 6 er small laser and 3 medium pulse lasers in the A, and 4 Streak SRM 6 in the D, the mad cat is a devastating fighter at any range, in any configuration. The B Variant has the most manageable heatcurve, relying on the Gauss rifle for it's big punch, but with clan weapons hitting harder, at greater distance and with no minimum effective range, All the variants are nasty.
There are some mechs that are "better" depending on your playstyle, Madcats tend to lack jumpjets, or advanced electronics, but as a straight up battlemech, few mechs are so versatile, or well known.

Per Sarna.net:
Vaguely resembling a cross-over between the MAD (Marauder) and CAT (Catapult) series, the Timber Wolf was tagged with the Inner Sphere reporting name Mad Cat on first contact. (The targeting computer on Phelan Kell's Wolfhound switched between MAD and CAT when trying to identify it); Martial Anastasius Focht later officially designated it "Mad Cat".
Now that's just a cool piece of trivia that I didn't know until recently.
Also, although it was totally not canon, in Mechwarrior2 a player could load up a Timber Wolf with nothing but machine guns and jump jets and then just jet up into your opponents' faces and unleash 10 machine guns. MG's were super short on range and not that great on damage, but in MW2 (and some others MW games in the series) they generated NO HEAT. So you could just hold the trigger down and watch arms fly off. As I said....absolutely not canon....but I miss it.

And the funny thing is in MW:LL bushie steers like a freight train. Still one hell of a mech though. Hard to take down or even cripple the firepower.

Not to mention it was on the cover of MW2, and the front of the huge manual.
The intro to MW2.
The Logo of Mechwarrior 3.
Along with the fact that it is functionally a great mech.
Timber Wolf will always be the first thing I think of when I think "MechWarrior". Always.
