Because Catapults are cheeze mechs and Marauders are cool. A Timberwolf is what happens when a mommy Catapult and a daddyMarauder go off to 'make war'. You get Cool Cheeze.

Probably mostly cuz of all the Omni's it is the most aesthetically pleasing a.k.a. it looks cool.

Because for alot of us battletech /mechwarrior fans alot of our first exposure to the universe came from Battletech/Mechwarrior for the Genesis and SNES.

And that mech was the Timberwolf. (And no it will never ever be called the Mad Cat by me. It's the Timberwolf damnit!)
https://www.youtube....e&v=_eoqePaR2zs

It only snowballed from there for alot of us...

Because guess which mech got the cover art for Mechwarrior 2 for the playstation 1? Yeah. The Timberwolf.

It's 1 part Nostalgia, 2 parts the mech just happens to look friggin Sexy.

The Timberwolf because of its association with a certain guy from the best clan in existence.

It's because of them delicious pies.

As for the Timberwolf... I don't know. Most of my table top play were pre-clan. We fought a bit against them but never as part of them. I always thought the clan's mechs were on the ugly side, but I'd say I'm biased because their mini would always unglue one part or another.

was called Madcat in MW4:Mercs...it was a decent mech then. I'm not into the lore much or really care what my mech looks like, so it all comes down to performance. If it ends up being a good mech for my playstyle over another mech I use I will try it, otherwise prolly won't see it have a place in my mechbay

was also the first clan mech encountered. Kind of a big moment for BT fans, especially of the books like myself. Makes sense why it's the iconic mech when you think mechwarrior.

Timber Wolves are Omni mechs, so likely they won't have to worry about what hardpoints it has. Usually an Omni follows the standard packages but they don't have to. There are multiple examples from the books of a mechwarrior putting pretty much whatever he damn well pleases into the mech. Usually for a Bloodname contest or a mission with an unusual profile, the only thing stopping a Clan mechwarrior from stuffing 40 medium lasers into his Warhawk is that the standared 4 ERPPC or 2 ERPPC 2 Gauss loadout has proven to be better in almost every situation.

It pretty much goes without saying that there are plenty of examples of specific characters that have an Omni variant they strongly prefer. Natasha Kerensky coming immediately to mind.

Minmaxers will put SRMs/ER Medlasers into in with largest XL engine anyway like they did it with Stalker-3F which can be(and is)pretty effective mech at all ranges in basic config...
But ppl-I-want-high-ELO-thus-BIG-BALLS just will screw up all mechs :D

I am new at this game and keep reading that superior 'Clan mechs' will be introduced soon. Does that mean everyone will drop current 'IS junk'? And will we have to chose factions and be limited to their robots? What chances IS faction would have against Clan unless it's 5v8? Sorry if this is posted somewhere already.

If they follow "canon" then IS mechs are going to get wrecked for the next 2-5 years IRL and then we get to catch up tech wise. The 5v8 gameplay will barely suffice for a balancing factor, but I see no reason to play any IS chassis (other than assault which I don't play) to stay in the inner sphere. IF I rp'd then sure IS all the way, but if going clan gets me clan mechs ( which I like) then I'm doing that. And I will subvert all the clan engagement rules all the way.

During the first reported drop of the clan invasion, Mechwarrior Phelan Kell was first to spot the emerging 'Mech on the battlefield. The reason for the Timber Wolf's designation "mad cat" is a clear sign of the Inner Sphere's sophomoric concepts: When Phelan Kell achieved visual on the invaders his targeting computer attempted to attain information on the first battlemech to be seen. The computer frantically toggled between designate "MAD-IIC" and "CPLT-A1" (MAD being shorthand for Murauder, and CPLT short for Catapult, their similiarities to the Timber Wolf end with this missidentification). after the post action report was reviewed, the Precentor designated this unknown threat as a "MAD CAT".

P.S. Shining example of just how sub-par anything inner sphere really is, they don't even know what to call that thing. Additionally, it is extremely disrespectful to the ideology of the Timber Wolf to call it a mad cat. Such leasurly grammar is disgraceful to one's house; any true battletech geek would ever bring such sin upon that name.

Two of the most loved IS mechs pre clan invasion were the catapult and the marauder. They basically mixed the two together to make the mad cat.

But it seems to me that in every iteration, it's uglier than the Marauder. Well, except that one Marauder Reseen...

Personally I'm not a fan of the Mad Cat/Timberwolf. Part of this is that I am one of those stubborn, old farts to whom the iconic mechs are the unseen. Warhammer, Marauder, Thunderbolt, Locust, Phoenix Hawk, Crusader, Rifleman, Battlemaster and so on and so forth.

Still, I just never liked the look of the Mad Cat, which is odd since I do like the Marauder and I do like the Catapult. I think it's the whole "front of an airplane fuselage with legs and arms stuck on it" thing. Personally if I _had_ to pilot a clan mech my choice, based solely on looks, is the original design for the Vulture/Mad Dog (I did not like the MW4 redesign at all). To me its tall, skinny hunched over appearance with those thin, long gunbarrel arms just has a nifty, menacing look to it. It's one of the very, very few clan mechs I'd bother to give a second look at all if I passed it by in the mech showroom.
