Just going to throw this out there, but you know that the Overlord pack (or even Founders) you bought was of limited supply, right? You can't buy them anymore, so you bought into a limited digital good. I see plenty of people in this thread who bought into a limited digital good, and seemed to be just fine with it.

There's a difference - placing a time limit makes sense because it encourages people to buy the product before time runs out. You can do the same thing with a "quantities are limited" approach (which is what I think PGI is going for). However in the case of digital goods its possible to say "quantities are limited" while they are in fact not (since there's no cost associated with "increasing quantities available"). My point is that it would be stupid to say "quantities are limited" and then actually limit them.

I see what you're getting at, I think. I'd rather see them actually limit them, than be dishonest with the whole "Quantities are limited" bit, whilst they giggle in a corner while people scramble to get them before they're "gone".

Is there a counter somewhere, or are there still fifty left?

I suppose it does not matter.

If I truly feel I need one I will call for a Trial of Possession like any true Warrior of Kerensky

Honestly for me it's a matter of trust, I'm a simmer and have spent many $ on DLC, the time and effort that has been spent on say an aircraft in ROF is apparent, so $20 on average including field mods is a fair exchange, an aircraft module in DCS world? Wow....any simmer will know what I'm talking about.
There is an inherent trust in the developers that they are working with you, they have their own and the community's best interest at heart. They are fans, they love their product and want it to be a success and a legacy.
Don't get me wrong, ROF, Iracing, DCS world, BOS (early access but will be a amazing product for $) are not perfect but you can see your spending on a fair deal with developers that really want to create something special.

As a new player, I was instantly put off by how blatant the MWO financial model was, we all want our beloved games to be a success, want to support the developers, but really the clan packages and gold skins shows a lack of respect and a fantastic insight into the care and respect PGI are putting into their customer base.

I don't like to post negative things on forums generally and I do understand I come from a sim community so this may be just a shock that's more apparent to myself. Personally I really don't want to spend too much money with these guys, I just don't trust it.

Saying that I have spent a limited amount, the game is good, I am a little addicted I admit, but can I look at PGI with anything other than "minimally viable product, maximum profit"....nope. Do I think an exit strategy is in place and will be sudden and unexpected....um yup.

I've lived long enough with too little money to know I wouldn't squander it on such a frivolous thing as gold plating for a video game 'Mech, if I were given an exorbitant amount of money. I would secure myself financially as well as my loved ones, donate a LARGE portion of it to charities. I'm a simple person, I don't need a lot of money.

I bought the Timberwolf singular package. Why?

I used to think I'd donate a large portion of money to charities if I ever exceeded x amount of annual income. What I discovered after reaching that goal was that instead of donating to many charities I'm putting most of what I'd planned to donate into a college fund for my children.

I know some might think the money spent on this virtual "toy" is frivolous but instead of buying some other new toy I decided to purchase a Gold Khan mech to provide that much more funding for MWO aside from everyone's MC and Mech purchases.

MechWarrior as a saga holds a dear place in my heart for a lot of reasons (some surprisingly not so geeky) that I won't get into here.

So anyhow as I stated in my original post, that's why I made the buy: a show of support for MechWarrior as a wargaming and science fiction franchise more than anything else. In this case it's just that PGI is the office that's currently building upon this great series I want to see live on and succeed.
A "charity" if you will (I also donate regularly to the Institute for Cancer Research).

Kudos on getting a Timber Wolf ;) Also one of my most favorite mechs ever. I think when they release the Clan mechs we'll be seeing more Timber Wolves (both Gold and not-Gold) than you can shake a stick at  Those things are a joy to pilot!

Anyhow, wishing you a good weekend and a fun time on the battlefield.

Gosh, only 50 of a completely arbitrary number your marketing team pulled out of its ass are left? Guess I'd best jump right on it.

Just remember folks - If you buy a golden timber wolf all you are buying is the rights to that package and the game as it will be in June.

Community Warfare, future progress & development are not included or guarenteed.

I'd wager that the "only 50 left" is extensible to hundreds, with always just 1 more left for the milking.

My core point being that my money will not be enriching IGP/PGI's slush fund, so whatever else you may feel reading this, remember; PGI/IGP lost another paying customer (and former mwo supporter).

I'm curious myself what sort of pre-emptive actions, if any, will be taken to mitigate violations of the Code of Conduct other than the in-place reporting to the Support office.

I guess we'll have to wait and see.

I don't even know why anyone would want one of these anyway?
Isn't just a "look how much cash I have more than you" exercise?
How many of these will be teamkilled? ;)

Kamiko-san, it isn't to show off, it's to show support for MechWarrior as a wargaming and science fiction franchise more than anything else.
In this case it's just that PGI is the office that's currently building upon this great series I want to see live on and succeed.

Well this settles two of the more valid complaints I've seen raised about the gold mechs. First, the claim they were limited without actually stating the limit and second what the gold skin actually looks like.

I'm not about to buy one but I see no reason to be upset by something being sold so long as it is purely cosmetic.

Except the minor part where they didn't say how many they sold in the first place. And there isn't anywhere to show you how many of those 50 are left now... so unless they suddenly announce that the gold mechs you get are numbered you have no idea just how limited or not they are.

I still think it's goofy to put an alleged "only x number of things" on a digital good that you can copy as many times as you want, but I realize it's just a marketing ploy in this context ;)

As opposed to anything else that, I'm sure, you could have Chinese laborers manufacture until end of days. The concept of 'limited edition' or 'Collector's Edition' has always been a marketing gimmick, whether that be a comic, a commemorative plate, or a gold/silver coin marking the anniversary of some such event.

If it wasn't so ridiculously expensive I'd have considered saving up longer to buy a gold 'Mech or two, but as I've said at least once somewhere I'd rather invest that sort of money into the R&D of REAL BattleMechs rather than these binary-built machines. ;)

No one would have predicted a year ago that PGI would have screwed the game up so baddly that they would have to essentially beg people to buy clan mechs.

Clan mechs should have been a license to print money.

Epic fail.

I bought a gold mech. I know I will be hunted every night until I QQ. Regardless of how much I whine about all the stuff I hate about the direction this game is going, I'm going to support it until it's dead.

Only 50 left? Did they sell a whole lot of them or is this just marketing ploy, something tells me it's the later. But not to burst the sells bubble, just remember when your riding around in a gold mech you are the first target that everyone wants to take out

There is only one reason they did this, marketing. Make it seem desirable by saying there are only so many, or that you have only so much time to buy it. Gives it a sense of urgency. My feelings are summed up quite nicely by this article here. http://www.forbes.co...0-golden-mechs/

As Paul stated in a recent podcast with NGNG - marketing is all IGP.....

I would hazard at a guess those who actually LOVE the game have a minimal say in this kind of stuff, that is just my thoughts though.. ..if you read between the lines that is. ;)

On a side note, dont go hating the devs for this..

It's probably both. The Timber Wolf is really popular. And FWIW even the ones that aren't annoyed at the whole Gold Mech concept will still be shooting at the gold mechs first simply because they catch the eye. Unless they release a bunch of maps like this: Posted Image
