I don't think the point of the campaign is "Show your support of our game by making big purchases!"

The point of the campaign is to offer people that are into "exclusive" luxury items something to buy so they can stand out on the field. There are enough people that will pay ludicrous amounts to show off their perceived status. And not just in video games, but in cars, fashion... hell, look at Russia! Russians with money will go out of their way to flaunt how much money they have!

IMO the people that buy into these types of things are often pretty shallow, but hey it's their money to spend for their "status" symbol, so I say "pay up", and congratulations on your insane purchasing ability.

Charitable or decadent intentions of the player aside, its all money that helps keep this adventure trudging onward.

Now, if one of the future dev video blogs comes along later and they are laying around on mattresses made of pure gold with $10,000 a night hookers and blow... we might have to revisit the foundations of this endeavor.

After thinking a bit about it;
I think PGI is just wondering why so many high priced packages from star citizen are actually bought out while only a handful of the golden mechs probably sold

Right golden puma 500$

So they try to boost sales the only way they know; hyping

Yes it's funny how we complain about those 500$ mechs considering SC 1500$ packages and even the ones more expensive are sold out, but MWO disappointed us so many times
And that's what this anger is about, not the price realy, but broken promises and reality sinking in

It's actually that bad that some have suggested that MWO is a case study in a minimal viable product
Well think about it a little, what's the game made of; a handful of maps and loads of mechs that will over time be less and less different from another since you can cram everything into any mech you buy with only little restrictions
And what's the goal
Honor for you're house?
Peeling you're character?
Story?
Just grinding some more C-Bills for you're next mech since 2 years or so

Main mistake here is that Mechwarrior players are generally adults...

No ill tell you what the mistake was.

The mistake was that gold mechs werent sold at the same time as the founders packs. People are far more likely to spend massive amounts of money on blind faith than they are to spend massive amounts of money after they already know your game is crap.

Star Citizen will be a crappy game. But look at all the people spending thousands of dollars on it out of blind faith that it wont suck. Once star citizen comes out and its not the game that was promised youre going to see peoples wallets closing very quickly.

IGP had their chance to rip people off like chris roberts and they squandered it. Moral of the story: If youre going to rip people off, do it when theyre blindly optimistic about your game, not when theyre mindfully skeptical about it.

For the record, I don't dislike the gold clan mechs because I think PGI is greedy. I have no problem with corporations making a profit off anything especially given the fact corporations are made up of people who have families who are trying to take care of those families. Enough of this burn the "greedy" corporation down.

However, I see the gold mechs as a symbol of PGI's continued folly and poor decisions. Their marketing is absolutely terrible. Just when there marketing started to get good they come out with this infomercial desperation. At every turn they have stumbled a fallen on their own feet. All across the board they cannot get out of their own way. Leading up to the Clan invasion, followed by the invasion, and into the Battle of Tukayyid is the most suspenseful and exciting time for the Battletech series. If they even remotely tried to emulate it MWO would be a smash hit. They started to with a few InnerSphereNews posts. Man, they were building it up good. But then everything came to a halt. The gears stopped and everything came to a halt. What happened? Where did all the work they did from closed beta to the point when InnerSphereNews stopped transmitting hints of the Clan Invasion. Now the game is mired in weapons "balancing" and weapons "fixes" which are the predominant portion of every patch. Now the Clan rollout which should be an amazing rollout is kind of sputtering out of the gates. Really, PGI? Really? A softball was there for you to crush it out of the park and you whiffed three times on it. Mighty Kasey has struck out!

PGI... Please... If you are incapable of making it work right then I implore you to sell MWO to a developer that can do it. You have made good money so now it is time to sell it to someone who can make it as grand as it should be. That company will make money hand-over-fist. This is a cash cow in competent hands. If you can pull it off PGI then get off your collective butts and do it! Prove the doubters wrong. Alas, the track record is set and I do not think they can do it. Prove us wrong.

Hey, lets try something!
Lets ALL stop spending money on MWO, lets see how long those "Gold Mech sales" keep the Game Alive!
I bet money on 4 Weeks, AT BEST.

Good luck, let me know how that turns out.

And you really think this money is going to "support Development"? Whoa! You really are gullible then. This is just a marketing ploy. I mean think about it... What are you getting for the extra $260 besides a "gold skin job"? There is nothing about it that justifies the extra money spent.

All of this money is going straight to the Publisher. With maybe a small portion of it going to the Execs at PGI.

And I do not care. If people want to pay it, it is their money they throw away.

That would be great if it's true. It means all the people complaining about MWO (all 5 of them) are wrong, and he was right. :P

man this is gonna be first thing entire team shoots at

And I will just quote myself from another thread:

Quote

And that's how the enemy team will be beaten. They will be so blinded by intense rage upon seeing the shining golden mech in the distance they will head straight for it like a pack of zombies, ignoring everything else ... especially the 11 other enemy mechs waiting in ambush.

It'll be the perfect troll machine. <maniacal :P :D >

Never actually says limited in number, in almost every premium f2p package I've seen it refers to time and not quantity when it says limited edition

He didn't say anything about shooting any that may be on his team, but those mean enough to shoot goldies on their own team will likely be sneakier about it than just drop and shoot.

Dude never said 'team kill'. I'm assuming (more like praying) that Clan and IS 'Mechs won't be dropping together anyway, so it's not like people will have a chance to team-kill unless they themselves bought a clan 'Mech.

Ergo, presumably he just means he'll be gunning for golds in his IS 'Mech of choice.
Besides, why would anyone ever want to team kill Il-Khan Gilded Distraction of Clan Moving Target?

I feel people keep forgetting that the $500 gold mech package comes with the highest tier masakari pack anyways, it's still $260 for a single mech, which is still ridiculous, but at least you're getting everything else as well...

Just gonna say this again to take away from the supposed TK chatter... the Devs need to redesign and update the Clan package page regarding how many actual Gold Mechs are available... to limit your community with availability also limits your profit margin, regardless if it's pennies... or dollars, it all adds up. There was never mentioned (that I recall) about these Gold packages being in limited quantity... they mention: "extremely rare, limited edition" but not "we're only selling x amount of Gold Mechs cause Clanners are poor and can't build thousands of these" type of statement :P
